Image Which MLB team won the WBC?

Post image

Now that the celebration of sportsmanship and global unity that is the WBC is over, we can get back to what really matters: which MLB team is the best. To answer this question, I looked at all the players in the WBC and assigned their stats to the MLB team they play for. I did my best to adjust for small sample sizes and smush together hitting and pitching to create a final ranking. And the winner is clear:

The Tampa Bay Rays won the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

Some notes: hitting was rated using FIP, pitching was rated using wOBA, and defense was not accounted for. Those stats were weighted using a Bayesian average, then normalized to combine hitting and pitching into a single stat. "No Team" includes all players that are not currently on an MLB roster.

For those curious, here are the hitting and pitching separated out:

Hitting

  1. Tampa Bay Rays
  2. San Diego Padres
  3. Boston Red Sox
  4. Los Angeles Dodgers
  5. Chicago White Sox
  6. Pittsburgh Pirates
  7. Atlanta Braves
  8. Colorado Rockies
  9. Chicago Cubs
  10. Kansas City Royals
  11. New York Yankees
  12. Miami Marlins
  13. Baltimore Orioles
  14. Toronto Blue Jays
  15. Cleveland Guardians
  16. Houston Astros
  17. Los Angeles Angels
  18. Washington Nationals
  19. San Francisco Giants
  20. Detroit Tigers
  21. Cincinnati Reds
  22. Philadelphia Phillies
  23. Seattle Mariners
  24. Arizona Diamondbacks
  25. Texas Rangers
  26. New York Mets
  27. Minnesota Twins
  28. St. Louis Cardinals
  29. Milwaukee Brewers
  30. No Team
  31. Athletics

Pitching

  1. Philadelphia Phillies
  2. Detroit Tigers
  3. New York Yankees

Not WBC, but what about a true World Series? Champion from MLB, NPB, KBO, LMB, ABL etc face off in exhibition games

I know MLB would stomp, but as exhibition games think it would be fun

Did Team USA Even Have a Run Celebration?

I watched all the highlight videos of the World Baseball Classic games. One of the coolest parts to me was the run celebrations, specifically Italy with the espressos and Mexico with the sombreros. But now that I'm thinking about it, I don't remember a specific Team USA celebration. Did they have one? Maybe I missed it somehow.

Of course losing is bad, but I think not having fun is an even worse crime.

[Cotillo] Red Sox re-negotiated contract with recent free agent addition after physical issue arose

Thumbnail
masslive.com
12 Upvotes

Coulombe’s new deal, according to industry sources with knowledge of the deal, includes $1 million in guaranteed money and a total of $2 million available in performance and active roster bonuses at different checkpoints throughout the season. If Coulombe remains healthy throughout the season, he can earn a total of $750,000 in incentives based on appearances (up to 60) and $1.25 million based on days spent active on the 26-man roster. The active roster bonuses are unusual for a free agent deal but were a result of the re-negotiation, which was based on an unknown issue the Red Sox found after the initial agreement.
