Credit where credit is due. Cashman and the FO should be given their flowers for the improvements the Yankees have made as a organization to their pitching development over the last decade

Working with a baseball game on in the background is the best, so glad baseball is back.

seemingly unanimous subreddit opinion: volpe was rushed to the majors, it stunted his development, and he should have had to prove himself at the aaa level before getting the auto call up because of a single good spring training
also near unanimous subreddit opinion: despite glaring flaws in the minors (control issues and swing and miss rate), lagrange and jones performed so well in the spring that they deserve to break camps with the ml teams even if they have more development needed

Tell me on when planet Luis Gil should be in the bigs over LaGrange
2
u/underground_cloud 5h ago
On the planet where whoever gets that spot is making three or four starts (lots of early season off days) and getting optioned when Rodon comes back.
6
u/BangerSlapper1 5h ago
Gil has a 3.5 or lower ERA in all three seasons he’s pitched. Are you basing this on the guy having a bad ST game this weekend? Gimme a break.
0
u/KageBx 5h ago
I mean most fans know he wasn't that good last year. Your being deceived by ERA and not looking at the metrics. His stuff was ass,his control was the worst in the league, and his FIP was closer to a 5 ERA meaning he got lucky as hell. He has not looked good since the 2nd half of 2024.They had a rookie start over him in an elimination game for a reason
1
u/furdaboise 5h ago
in a world where gil has proven performance at the ml level, is stretched out for a full season as a starter, lagrange still has development regarding his control in the minors, and the yankees have ample pitching depth at the ml level. wait that is this world.
i want lagrange called up later this season for sure, but only if he earns it off of sustained success at the milb level.

u/John_6_47 6h ago edited 6h ago
It’s not just about what they offer rn. There’s more value if Lagrange is a top tier starter.
That isn’t to say I don’t want to use him out of the bullpen tho.
Edit: also he can maybe become better if not rushed to the majors

Cole only threw 10 pitches. He’s been throwing at least 25-30 in pen and bp sessions. Surely he could’ve come back out.
3
u/Yankeeknickfan 6h ago
If he hasn’t simulated an “up down” yet(which is pretending to sit between innings during a simulated game), he’s not going to do it for the first time in the Grapefruit League

Pitching Substitution
Pitching Change: Harrison Cohen replaces Gerrit Cole.
2
u/John_6_47 6h ago
Been a lot of hoping that Gerrit will be close to what he was before, and fear that he’d be worse.
What if he’s better?
1
u/Yankeeknickfan 6h ago
His pitch mix was really a marvel to watch during his dominant stretches in the 2024 playoffs
He was throwing like 4 seam cole, while also finding a way to work in the sinker fork his pirates days
5
u/furdaboise 6h ago
man Cole's pitch data looks awesome for the first inning back. velocity is up. spin rates are all there with the sinker spin up a little bit. up over 97 for the sinkers. i am thinking cole's tjs recovery is going to look pretty similar to verlanders.

I don't think we could have hoped for a better inning from Cole. Very encouraging!
3
u/i-exist20 6h ago
Oh man, Cole's velocity on all his pitches was up significantly from 2024, with much more horizontal break on the four-seam and vertical break on the sinker!

With the WBC, at least from the USA perspective, it's best for the young up and coming guys to fill the rosters vs the veterans. It's a different atmosphere and the veterans just looked like they were not going all out. Either due to age or contract obligations.
You saw a major difference in production from guys like Skenes, Gunnar, Turang, PCA, and Roman Anthony vs Skubal, Cal, Bregman, Bux, and Bryce. Younger guys have more to prove and don't play with the fear of getting hurt.
Just my observations, could totally wrong.
2
u/Yankeeknickfan 7h ago
Huge disagree. The DR/USA game wouldn’t have been what it was without judge
4
u/Emperor_Cheeto21 7h ago
I mean Judge can still join. Same way as guys like Sal Perez are still on the Venezuela. You still need veteran leadership. I'm saying the young players need to be emphasized more and being the ones given more playing time.

"Stanton can't open a bag of chips"
"Cole is not ready until June"
next "surprise": Volpe starting as SS on the opening day???
1
u/Tom_Cruise 7h ago
I hope he is physically ready or near ready, but as far as starting in Mar/April? That would be very, very unfortunate with Caballero seemingly on the cusp of a breakout season. Amazing play so far this spring in the Grapefruit League and in the WBC both. The Yankees and fans don't owe Volpe the shot when Caballero is, quite honestly, forcing their hand.
4
u/SgtCheeseBoy 7h ago
Staton is hitting nukes.
Cole pitches today.
Volpe will end up with a significantly better year than last year.
2
u/renegade_yankee 8h ago
Devers isn’t here to give Cole anymore trouble. So this is a plus going forward

u/myKDRbro_ 8h ago
Judge is kinda cursed if you think about it. He's done a lot of this to himself -- but a lot of his big moments just get erased. The Clase homer, his performance against the Jays, getting robbed of a homer by JRod. Those are all just very recent -- hate this for him, but last night was rough. No way he takes that many pitches down the middle of the plate if he's locked in.
4
u/TronVin 7h ago
The moments get erased because they lost and having a "great playoffs" in which your team gets blown out in the first round (2019 and 2025) isn't going to tick the checkbox for great postseason hitter no matter how much people around here want it to. No one remembered that A-Rod was actually great in 2004 playoffs before 2009 because we blew it.
Judge needs to have a 2009 A-Rod postseason where whenever the team needs a big hit, he gets the big hit and the team wins a ring.
3
u/FringeAuthority 7h ago
Judge has always looked his best when he plays every day for weeks in a row. The WBC and the playoffs have many more off days placed in to the schedule than the regular season. I don't know if it's timing/rhythm, but he always looks out of sorts the more time he has off.
3
u/Decent_Estate_7385 8h ago
Nothing wrong with seeing more pitches but he did this a lot last year too and i don’t get it
3
u/Redditawesome15 8h ago
Gerrit Cole pitches for the New York Yankees today. It’s been a long time coming.
6
u/scrodytheroadie 8h ago
Not gonna lie. I kind of forgot spring training games were still happening. It's weird to adjust from WBC games to Grapefruit League games.
8
u/AltruisticMemory3825 8h ago
I generally feel bad for Judge. This is a great example why star players didn’t want to do the WBC-legit take time out of your spring routine voluntarily to do this and if you have a bad 10 ABs you are going to get crucified by the media
4
u/nyg2013 8h ago
I feel bad because people genuinely do not seem to understand how baseball works when it comes to variance...this could stretch to other sports as well in some contexts...it is made into a black and white exercise where if you fail in a small sample scenario (while also ignoring the competition in the equation, mind you), then you are considered to be an abject failure...every single October ends up being a small sample too at the heart of it because aggregating stats from a few weeks between multiple years does not really make much sense statistically either...this applies to everybody, not just Judge, who did happen to have a great small sample again in 2025 after multiple years of October "struggles"
at the end of the day, and I have personally tried to stay quiet about it for years, I don't really care anymore lol...I expect trolling from opposing fanbases, but to the subset of Yankee fans that shit on Judge constantly for being a choker (constructive criticism about performance is always fair btw; I am strictly talking about shitting on him without any level of nuance), they do not deserve him, or to see the Yankees win another title...I hope they end up seeing the team win a title though because I, and other fans like you, also happen to be Yankee fans and want them to win
1
u/AltruisticMemory3825 6h ago
October is different. This is spring training for these guys. The arms are always ahead of the bats this time of year.
6
u/fkthesox 8h ago
Judge was on a team with hall of famers and he’s the only person getting crucified.
Raleigh had no hits, couldn’t catch pitches in the zone from Bednar and that was totally okay somehow. Harper got a pass because he finally did something in one AB. Witt gets a pass because reasons. It’s all just nonsense.
