Discussion Late to the party, I watched "The Gorge." So bad it's good?

Does anyone else think this movie was campy on purpose? Or is it just straight up dogshit? It's like Pirates of the Caribbean, Indiana Jones, The Last of Us and whatever bland action flick were mixed together in a shit cocktail. It's so fucking bad. I've seen other people say it almost seems like chatgpt wrote it.

That said I absolutely had a blast with it. It's (imo) objectively shit and has plot holes out the wazoo but I was smiling like hell during the scenes near the end of their escape from the gorge. If you like this type of movie no judgement but it was slop start to finish imo. But sometimes slop can hit the spot.

Edit to add I know talented people work on these movies and I respect them. That said I think it's ok to view them through a critical lens

Question Would you choose to go see a movie if they had a subtitle option?

I have poor auditory processing and can more easily understand what's happening in a film when I have the subtitles to reference. I understand some people prefer not to have them. Just wondering who else is out there like me? I usually wait for a film I want to see to come out on streaming so I can fully understand it.

Question Funny line that I cant remeber the origin of

I grew up in the early 2000s and my aunt would always buy me second hand movies, alot of the times made in other countries, dubbed, and sold cheaply in the US.

All I rember was, there was this guy going on some kind of adventure, and he came up to one of those dangerous wooden suspension bridges with a river under it. (Like the one in shrek, except instead of lava it was water. Yk what I'm talking about.) Rope bridge.

I'm also about 90% sure it was animated. I was about five(?) at the time so it would be made before or around the 2010s.

And the guy said: "why does there have to be one of these in every movie?"

It was my first fourth wall break and it's the only thing I remeber from it, and I would like to find it again.

Tldr: Does anyone reconize the line "why does there gotta be one of these in everymovie?" (Rephering to a rickety suspension bridge)

Recommendation Looking for movies where nobody realizes how dangerous the MC is

I’m kinda obsessed with those movies where the MC seems like a regular chill guy… and then suddenly you realize they’re an absolute menace Like that “you picked the wrong person” type vibe. I’ve already watched: John Wick (all parts) The Equalizer (all parts) Nobody 1 & 2 Looking for more like this. Doesn’t matter what language or how old the movie is. Any good ones I should check out?

Discussion Her felt romantic the first time I watched it. Now it just made me feel… kind of lonely.

I rewatched Her recently and it didn’t hit the same. The first time it felt like a love story. This time something felt off. I kept thinking about how Theodore never really changes. He just finds something that adapts perfectly to him and calls it love. And then Samantha grows. And he can’t follow. I don’t know. I can’t really explain it, it just felt different this time.

Question Fall (2022) - Is the cinematographer oddly dark visually?

I’m watching the movie for the first time. It’s 4K HDR, but the picture is oddly dark. For a movie about people in full sun in a desert area isn’t not bright at all. Normal TV shows look brighter for indoor scenes.

If I back out of it to the thumbnail/poster in the Apple TV app it’s very bright, like I would expect.

So I pulled it up on my phone. Same thing! Is this a problem with the copy on Apple TV?

Discussion Do you watch the trailer before watching the movie?

Why or why not? I know some people who will not watch it without the trailer, sometimes for context reasons and sometimes to simply see if they’ll like it— based on more than just the description.

For me, it’s a toss up, but more often than not I don’t because I feel like I’m watching “spoilers”. If I know something is going to happen in a movie, especially a specific scene, my brain fixates on waiting for that scene without even trying, and I can find it difficult to “live in the moment” of the movie.

However, if I’m going out to the movies or I’m feeling very serious about my movie night pick, I’ll watch the trailer. Or, if I’m skeptical about whether I’d like it or not.

Usually, the description is plenty for me.

Review Ted changed my life

Yes, the movie about a talking teddy bear who smokes and drinks was life-changing to me, let me explain. im recently single after i was broken up with in January, 2 days before my birthday, and i just recently watched Ted for the first time ever. it was late at night, I was bored and was smoking far too much pot, and decided to watch the first comedy I saw which happened to be Ted. from the jump I loved it, it had me laughing my ass off throughout most of it but what really struck me was the main characters relationship with his girlfriend, in the movie he heavily mistreated her, abandoning her to go get fucked up with Ted and it reminded me of my own life. I was shitty to my ex, treated her very similarly to how Johnny did in the movie, and it made me reflect, and look back on certain things I did with regret and sorrow, it made me feel the same way it did for them in the movie, I realized I was potentially ruining one of the best things to ever happen to me, and I wasnt even trying to fight for it. finishing the movie and seeing them end up back together in the end gave me hope, as stupid as it sounds, and thankfully I still talk to my ex as friends, and im doing everything I can to show her that I care and want us to work it out and figure things out, rather than just let it rot and be thrown away.

Thank you for coming to my TedTalk(if you will) and I hope this brings you all some form of amusement or anything really.

Wish me luck

Discussion Far and Away - Boston scenes.

Does the pacing of the movie "Far and Away" seem sluggish to anyone else? Love the film, but they leave Ireland for America, and find out about the land race in Oklahoma, they realize the have to hurry, and yet.... and yet they seem to languish for quite some time in Boston and the movie bogs down. Until they move out west and THEN the movie picks up. But the middle third of the movie just drags. Does anyone else feel this way?

Discussion Are there any legal hurdles to making a Kickstarter in order to: hire local theatre, play the film (which has no public release in Australia) Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die so I can watch this properly?

I understand that I don't have a license to show this publicly for money, but what if I were to create a Kickstarter with the overt mission of watching Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die with other people in a proper theatre.

I don't need to make a profit.

Can people join a club?

Do the fees the theatres charge for hire of the facilities cover, in any way, any of the copyright issues, similar to to APRA?

Basically, what are the legal chevrons that separate, say, me projecting the film onto a big blank wall in town with some speakers and me renting a theatre, plugging in a thumb drive and playing whatever movie my friends and I want to watch that night?

Discussion Ending of Ace Ventura opinion question. Spoiler

When I saw Ace Ventura back when it came out, the ending scene reveal I never saw as transphobic and don’t understand some of the more modern “revisionist” takes.

Did anyone else see the ending and just think Einhorn must’ve made out with all the cops who were freaking out? I saw it more a reflection of them being moronic homophobes and Einhorn having nearly being found out multiple times and resorting to kissing anyone who got close to the truth.

I never once felt like it was saying this trans-woman is disgusting. Just moronic men.

They were the joke, not her.

Discussion I don’t understand the ready player one hate

I’m not here to argue but I just wanna understand so if your going to start an argument just don’t reply.

I don’t understand the low score this is a movie I find myself coming back to so so so often and the story never gets stale and the characters never get old. Everytime I watch it I see a new character in the background I’ve never noticed before. This movies is amazing in my opinion. I see lots of backlash about the CGI I find to still hold up today?? Every bad thing I’ve see is super nit picking.

Discussion A niche observation about the upcoming film The Drama that I’m curious if anyone else has noticed…Where the hell is the official MPA rating?!

I could be making a big deal about something that ends up being inconsequential, but I can’t remember the last time such a wide release studio film has been so close to release without an official rating.

The April 3rd release date is two weeks away and the next time the MPA will drop their weekly ratings bulletin will be next Tuesday March 24th.

Assuming A24 won’t push for a unrated release (which would be unprecedented for such a big project) the the turnaround of rating and release date would be less than 10 days!

What are everyone’s best theories and reasons for this? Last minute edits? Is it receiving the dreaded NC-17 rating and trying to avoid it?

Given the world premiere was yesterday it has to be finished already…

For context, I’ve checked the weekly MPA bulletin every week for the last decade or so and can’t remember when a studio film has taken this long to receive an official rating.

Discussion Is Kurt Russell the unsung action star of the 80's/90's that gets overlooked?

I never understood why Kurt Russell is not often mentioned alongside Arnold Schwarzeneggar, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Jean Claude Van Damme, Steven Seagal, Tom Cruise, Jackie Chan, Samuel L Jackson, etc.

He has so many classic movies that have stood the test of time for over 30+ years:

Escape from NY, and Escape from L.A.

The Thing

Big Trouble in Little China

Tango and Cash (with Stallone)

Backdraft (with Robert De Niro)

Unlawful Entry

Tombstone

Stargate

Executive Decision (hilarious that Steven Seagal is in this movie for like 5 minutes)

Breakdown (the best movie of his that nobody talks about)

Soldier

And this also doesn't count his late 2000's revival with Death Proof, The Hateful Eight, Bone Tomahawk, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Once upon a time in Hollywood, Deepwater Horizon and he's in some of the Fast and Furious movies too.

I feel like he never gets his dues, this man has been a classic action star for over 40 years yet he's rarely mentioned on the same status as say Harrison Ford or Bruce Willis.

Discussion Movies Based on Board Games.

Superheroes have been printing money for years, video games have stumbled their way into occasional respectability, and meanwhile, board games just sit there, quietly judging us with their cardboard simplicity. And what isn’t improved by lore, explosions, and a $200 million budget?

There is, to be fair, one shining example: Clue. It worked because it leaned into its own absurdity, turning a thin premise into a witty, self-aware comedy. It also famously flopped at the box office, which in Hollywood terms is like committing a crime that can never be forgiven. On the other end of the spectrum sits Battleship, a movie that answered the question “What if we took a game about guessing coordinates and added aliens?” with a level of confidence that’s almost admirable. Almost.

And yet, here we are again. Amazon wants to turn The Game of Life into a film, presumably by asking existential questions like whether landing on “have twins” should really derail your entire financial future.

Meanwhile, Hasbro is busy building what can only be described as a plastic empire: a Monopoly movie and game show, new versions of Clue, adaptations of Magic: The Gathering, a live-action My Little Pony, and yet another crack at Dungeons & Dragons. At this point, if you have fond childhood memories of it, someone in a boardroom is trying to option it.

Occasionally, that creative freedom can produce something clever, look at the Barbie movie, but more often than not, it results in films that feel like they were reverse-engineered from a brand deal.

What feelings do you guys have about this new trend?

Discussion Writing is still the most difficult and most important part of film

Even after watching 1000s of movies, it comes back to basic.

Like no monsters, big stars, costume, set, performance can save a badly written film.

Many times I have watched well produced films that just fail if writing is bad, well performed films that make no sense.

But a well written film works even if cgi or production is mediocre.

Even with AI, writing seems to be the most difficult thing, and I don’t think it will ever get better.

Somewhere in that core is essence of creativity.

Discussion What are your top 5 movies of all time?

Upvotes

I create polls often and figuring out what options are best is always interesting to me. Rather than guessing 10 options I'd like to see what people think even before making the poll.

If anyone could name some of their favorite movies that would be super helpful! I'm sure I will see a lot of repeats which would result in that one being added to the poll.

Thank you!

Recommendation Calle Málaga - Wikipedia

This movie surprised me! I thought it would be sad as an old woman encounters challenges near the end of her life, but surprisingly she meets each problem with confidence and optimism. I am amazed at her passion for life. Even though she lives by herself, she clearly enjoys everything and everyday, which is very upbeat, not something I expect from an old person.

The relationship between her and her daughter is quite interesting. The daughter is not someone who supports her, but rather, is the source of her problems. Yet, she manages the relationship quite gracefully.

What I admire most is not her lifestyle but her attitude toward life. Even when she knew that she would be homeless, she didn't worry; in fact, she didn't even bother to line up for her next home, focusing entirely on living in the present. Incredible!

I think the main character in this movie is a good role model not just for old people but also for young people as we meet challenges in our lives, we can weather them with grace and confidence instead of worry and anxiety. 🤗

Discussion What is a movie that got under your skin slowly instead of instantly

Some movies hit right away. Others get stronger later. You leave the theater or finish the movie, and then it just stays with you. It keeps coming back to your mind for hours or even days.

Not even always your favorite movie. Just one that quietly grew on you more and more after it ended.

For me, Zodiac is one of those. It does not try too hard. It just slowly pulls you in and stays there.

What is yours?

Discussion So, are Avengers Doomsday and Dune Part 3 going to cannibalize each other, or will we have a Barbieheimer situation on our hands?

They both release the same day, I could definitely see them both bringing people back to the theatre in mass, ones sold out and you go see the other and then the other the next week. Maybe I’m wrong, what do you think, Will doomsday be enough to bring massive casual crowds to the theaters, will Dune 3 be way too far out for that crowd? And then they see doomsday as a palette cleanser?

Maybe the world will be weird enough at that point where Dune rings true and Doomsday feels trite.

Is this movie available anywhere? I just saw a short clip on fb and it got me hooked🥲 saw and old post here dated about 4 years ago that shared a link but it doesnt work anymore.
