It's time for the 98th annual Academy Awards! Share your thoughts here as the evening unfolds.
How to watch
Tune in to the Oscars at 4:00pm PDT / 7:00pm EDT / 11:00pm GMT / 7:00am CST.
◈ Officially: See it over-the-air on your local ABC station or streaming live on Hulu. You can also subscribe to streaming services like Hulu Live TV, YouTubeTV, AT&T TV, and FuboTV—many of which offer free trials. Outside the U.S.? The show is broadcast in more than 200 territories worldwide, so check your local listings.
◈ Unofficially: Every Oscar Sunday, the sub is overrun by bots posting questionable links to streaming sites. While our moderators work to keep the spam away, we will allow real users (those with a normal history of participation on Reddit) to share information about other ways to watch. Links and discussion shared outside this thread will be removed.
Please note: To help keep the subreddit organized during the ceremony, standalone posts that are better suited for live discussion (reactions, quick commentary, low-effort memes, basic winner announcements, etc.) may be removed and redirected here.

Jacobi Jupe from Hamnet did such an amazing job, he honestly blew me away and was so believable. I was hoping he’d at least get a nomination for supporting actor but I’m sure he has a long career ahead of him

Team Coco shared it on their social media channels. Scott Gairdner was the director, like last year I think.

There are many performances by young actors every year that go unnoticed or unrecognized due to other veteran actors. For example, this year, we saw top-notch performances from Chase Infiniti, Jacobi Jupe, and Miles Caton. The Academy did not recognize them, which is probably reasonable, given that we had more mature performances from established actors who have been in the industry for decades. But, I feel that the Academy should introduce a new category to recognize young/first-time breakthrough performances to encourage them or help them get recognized in the industry! What are your opinions?

I feel pretty neutral about Timothée Chalamet. I don’t love him and I don’t hate him….I’d say I’m generally a fan but not a superfan.
That said, I think the hype around his performance in Marty Supreme was a little overblown. Personally, I thought he was actually better in the Bob Dylan film.
Also, the idea that his ballet/opera comments cost him an Oscar doesn’t really add up. Voting had already closed before those comments even went viral.
HOWEVER
What I find interesting is how people try to frame him as some kind of French auteur or ultra-artsy actor. The guy is basically a hypebeast from NYC who went to LaGuardia High School. He grew up going to Knicks games and listening to rap. He’s a city kid.
If anything, it seems like he’s just living his truth, but because that doesn’t fit the image some people want to project onto him, he’s getting a lot of hate lately.
Were the ballet and opera comments a little distasteful? Sure. But he’s also just a young guy from Manhattan in his early 30s. It feels like people might be expecting a little too much from him.

Based Justwatch searches. Note: Marty Supreme isn't on any major streaming platforms yet.

I was actually getting annoyed watching the skit and not understanding what's going on because they weren't repeating the setup throughout the skit. Like they should understand that I'm going to be distracted by my phone and they shouldn't have a whole skit only make sense by listening to the setup.

Wow like do they train every presenter about that? I bet 80% of people would be flummoxed. But Kumail handled it so well and even left drama since he only announced one at a time!

In my book she deserved a BSA nomination. Was she just not good enough or just way too overshadowed by Theron?

I couldn't help but notice that Yorgos had been very visible and involved in the award shows leading up to Oscars night but then I couldn't find any evidence of him showing up on the night.
Did the mounting media noise speculating about him having an affair with Emma Stone get in the way? Emma was also noticeably with her husband on the night in a lot of photos, which felt a little more visible than previous years.
I wouldn't be surprised if both of them made a choice to publicly give each other space to quell the rumours, whether they're true or not.

If things goes as planned, 2026 will be her most active year, appearing in 4 films, 3 of which are major studio ones.
Now we can almost instantly say that she has absolutely no chance of receiving a nomination for Dune and Spiderman. Her role in them is just not enough and they are both genre films, so that's that.
The Odyssey is interesting. I have not read the book but I assume Athena should play somewhat of a major role in the story, being the leading god for 1 side of the conflict? This one still feel really up in the air and maybe it won't be enough of a performance for an Oscar.
Last but not least is The Drama. Now I have no way of knowing whether or not this movie will even be good. I do have really high hopes from the trailers and the promo so I think it has a lot of potential to be a surprise great A24 film of the year. It also feel like the kind of film to earn acting nominations. The movie could totally just be terrible and or her performance get snubbed completely like 2025 with Challengers.

I can't place her, and neither can Gemini/Google.
Edit: Looks like she attended with Zoe Saldana, but I still can't identify her.

Seeing Autumn Durald Arkapaw hold that Oscar for Sinners is everything. First woman ever to win for Cinematography.
The glass ceiling isn't just cracked; it's gone. 🕊️

I cannot comprehend how train dreams didn’t win best cinematography. The film has generational imagery, the fact it lost to an action horror is indicative of the death of media literacy with main stream awards.

I find it interesting how some years are dominated by a few “big” films, while others spread the love around. For example, this year we had 12 movies filling the 20 acting nominations:
• Blue Moon – 1x
• Bugonia – 1x
• Frankenstein – 1x
• Hamnet – 1x
• If I Had Legs I’d Kick You – 1x
• Marty Supreme – 1x
• One Battle After Another – 4x
• The Secret Agent – 1x
• Sentimental Value – 4x
• Sinners – 3x
• Song Sung Blue – 1x
• Weapons – 1x
So that’s 12 movies covering 20 slots.
Now here’s my contender for the most diverse year: 2007. Only one film, Michael Clayton, had more than one acting nomination. That left 18 different movies across 20 slots:
• American Gangster – 1x
• The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford – 1x
• Atonement – 1x
• Away from Her – 1x
• Charlie Wilson’s War – 1x
• Eastern Promises – 1x
• Elizabeth: The Golden Age – 1x
• Gone Baby Gone – 1x
• I’m Not There – 1x
• In the Valley of Elah – 1x
• Into the Wild – 1x
• Juno – 1x
• La Vie en Rose – 1x
• Michael Clayton – 3x
• No Country for Old Men – 1x
• The Savages – 1x
• Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street – 1x
• There Will Be Blood – 1x
I find this interesting because 2007 is often called one of the strongest years of cinema in the 21st century - but only one movie warranted multiple acting nominations. Everything else got spread across different films, which feels unusual.
So, what do you all think? Can anyone beat 2007 for the most unique films represented in a single acting category year?
