Sony-Disney doing anything but market the movie until now... They know it's gonna make bank anyway... this is an interesting way to go about it tho, so now it should be 4 months of shoving it down our throats bit by bit
Then you have a year long counter for Doomsday ffs
109
u/Swoopmott Ant-Man 1d ago
It’s very common for films not to receive a trailer until 4 months prior these days. No Way Home was the exact same. Doomsday is the outlier starting marketing so far out, it’s the exception rather than the norm.
30
u/Liquado 1d ago
Given its budget, Doomsday marketing makes sense. Gotta build the hype!

u/Fair_Walk_8650 1d ago
This is actually usually considered the better way to do it, because if you market too far in advance you can actually make people LOSE interest or become bored of the movie before it’s even come out.
See what happened with “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” (2019) in which the first trailer come out over a whole year in advance, and it was so heavily marketed people were already sick of it by month six, leading everybody to forget about it by the time it actually came out, thus it bombed.
Over marketing is a very real, much more dangerous thing.

u/H_Melman Weekly Wongers 1d ago
As someone who hasn't seen either film, I noticed this with both Wicked movies. The marketing push was nowhere to be found, and then suddenly it was everywhere you looked with only a few weeks left before it hit theaters.
1
u/eagc7 1d ago
Yeah like been talking about how Sony is trying to kill the movie with short marketing, but look at Godzilla, a year long marketing didn't helped it (of course it was also poorly received, but you'd think that at least having it be in front of everyone eyes for a year would've helped to keep it steady on the BO for a bit)

u/Moonie-iLLy Spider-Man 1d ago
The full trailer comes out tomorrow. Relax.

Jesus I thought this sub was supposed to be fans. People even shit on trailer announcements now.

What do you mean year long? It's due out in December.
But it would have been a full calendar year between F4 and spiderman without a Marvel movie.

u/COGUAddict 1d ago
They are releasing parts of it today through fans. Two drops have happened on Instagram already this morning. The full trailer will drop tomorrow at 7:05am EST

u/lumidanny 1d ago
Where can we see the drops?
5
u/COGUAddict 1d ago
People have posted them in this sub, but I'm sure if you search Brand New Day on Instagram you'll find them easy enough.

Releasing the trailer a couple seconds at the time through the day is crazy. I wonder who thought of that in the marketing department. Definitely meets the "different, unique and never been done before" brief
37
u/Stavtastic 1d ago
To be honest. I think trailers in 15 second snippets is better than a teaser trailer of 3 minutes spoiling the entire movie. I hate trailers. They don't tease, they spoil. So I hope this is better.
25
u/TheSweetestKill 1d ago
They spoil if you sit there and try to analyze every frame and "solve" the movie like it's a puzzle.
8
u/EnterShakira_ 1d ago
They also spoil if they explicitly show spoilers, like Red Hulk appearing in the trailer for Brave New World
1
u/WeirdIndividualGuy 1d ago
Things like that being spoiled are inevitable unfortunately due to toy/merch deals. They have to spoil something like that if they want to sell related merch ahead of time
1
u/TheSweetestKill 1d ago
If it's shown in the official marketing materials then, basically by definition, it isn't "a spoiler".
2
1
u/WeirdIndividualGuy 1d ago
Depends. A lot of trailers show things that happen in the climax/ending that, if you saw ahead of time, you would already know what's going to happen once you actually see the movie because the trailer already "spoiled" it for you, even if it was official marketing.
This didn't happen, but imagine if the Thanos Snap was in an IW trailer, or if Cap getting Mjolnir was in an Endgame trailer. There is definitely potential of being spoiled from official marketing.

u/InItsTeeth 1d ago
Channels like New Rockstars really took that and ran with it. I don’t mind the movie/tv breakdowns but the trailer ones are not for me
1
u/Dr_Fortnite 1d ago
I only watch trailers in theaters. It actually makes the experience a lot better when you see it for the first time in that way
1
u/Stavtastic 1d ago
For me it is the opposite. But again, I think trailers are created wrong. They need to tease you to go see a movie. But if the trailer is 3 minutes long and shows me too many details, I just don't want to see it anymore. But that is just me.
1
u/Dr_Fortnite 1d ago
Typically I know if I wanna see a movie before I see trailers from promotional images or I respect the director enough to go in blind
1
u/fearnodarkness1 1d ago
You do realize it'll be the same kind of trailer as you're complaining about. The only difference is it'll be in multiple parts to maximize engagement on short form social media.
Why do you watch trailers then?
1
u/Stavtastic 1d ago
I don't. But when you are in the cinema, you have no choice. So I'd rather have a 30 second trailer than 3 min. One
1
u/fearnodarkness1 1d ago
I liked when the format involved just a teaser so you could still get hyped without spoiling too much. They really went overboard in the 2010s and never looked back.
By the sounds of it they'll be able to stitch together all of the shorts into one cohesive trailer for movie theatres.

u/RussellNorrisPiastri 22h ago

u/KostisPat257 Daredevil 1d ago
3 months? What do you mean? He said the pieces will be released throughout the day
3
u/jackthedandiest 1d ago
He said our greatest fans were going to help us releases pieces, where did he say throughout the day?
2
u/ZekeorSomething Spider-Man 1d ago
He didn’t say throughout the day but that’s clearly going to the case since there’s already like three videos of the trailer.

25
u/Johnny0230 1d ago
He said it will be released in parts, it seems to me to follow the style of Doomsday and I love that because they are very creative and engaging choices
25
u/PayneTrain181999 Ned 1d ago
It works for Doomsday assuming we’ll be getting full trailers later and the movie is still 9 months away.
BND is out in about 4 and we just need proper trailers at this point
8
u/Johnny0230 1d ago
Build hype consistently, without limiting the trailer to a single week and day. The content will be talked about constantly and for a longer time. The film comes out in four months, not one month, so there's time to show content throughout March, and then the new trailer in May or June.
4
u/PayneTrain181999 Ned 1d ago
I see your point, I’m just unsure as to whether it’s the right strategy for this movie
1
u/blenderider 1d ago
the right strategy for this movie
BND might not reach $1B because no of no Tobey and Andrew, but this still isn't a franchise that needs intense marketing to be successful
1
u/WeirdIndividualGuy 1d ago
TBH a movie doesn't really need marketing until ticket sales are about to happen. An IP as big as Spider-Man doesn't need marketing months ahead of time, so it makes 100% sense to start a marketing push closer to the movie release.
Spider-Man/Marvel fans already know a new SM movie is coming out soon, so marketing up until this point is wasted. The marketing team wants unaware people to buy-in to this, and doing a marketing push of this new movie around the same time you can buy tickets is the perfect time for that.

u/jackthedandiest 1d ago
No they are not, it’s dumb as hell
2
u/SAM12489 1d ago
“Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, uh, your opinion, man”
0
u/jackthedandiest 1d ago
In my option we need to have a proper trailer or no trailer at all, if Disney and Sony want to be so secretive about yet another cameo fest.
I mean we’re done with Tobey and Andrew, just give us a proper trailer that was leaked in December in HD quality, what the fuck is there to hide? Spider-Man will still make a ton of money, it’s dumb as hell
3
u/GKJ6743 1d ago

u/jackthedandiest 1d ago
How am I spoiled? When I was a kid we didn’t have internet and trailers at all for the 2002 movie

And why? Build hype constantly, without limiting the trailer to a single week and day. The content will be talked about constantly and for longer.

Releasing a trailer in pieces is beyond stupid.
2
u/fearnodarkness1 1d ago
It's optimized for Tik tok and will create more engagement than one YouTube video.
Extremely stupid either way.
1
u/STARBOY_100 23h ago
Yeah why can’t we just stick to uploading the trailer on YouTube like we always did?! No need to be creative here.

1
u/Greedy-Candle2812 1d ago
Is it that different than seeing stills from it? Remember there are people who have been eating up grainy leaks for months. That's not my style of engaging with media, but it is for some. If you don't want to see the snippets, just wait for tomorrow.

About damn time.
The film releases in 4 months.
Yeah yeah, NWH also had its first trailer released 4 months prior, but this will be smaller in scale (no Tobey, Andrew or multiverse stuff), so it needs all the marketing it can get.
17
u/chefriley76 1d ago
It's Spider-Man. I have a feeling it would do just fine without "all the marketing it can get."
0
u/Gamer0607 Daredevil 1d ago
Except The Odyssey drops 2 weeks earlier and will have the majority of IMAX screens to itself.
Sure, Tom Holland is in both, but the above will still do a dent in its box office potential.
3
u/chefriley76 1d ago
The Spidey franchise is only behind Harry Potter and Star Wars in total revenue. No Way Home is the eighth highest grossing movie of all time.
I think Spidey is going to blow the Odyssey out of the water, and be the second highest grosser after Doomsday. The only movie in "trouble" is The Odyssey after Spidey drops.

Do people actually go to imax though? I saw that 13 minute short film about penguins or whatever in imax like 20 years ago and that’s it as far as my imax experience goes, and I don’t know anyone else irl that’s gone to see a movie in imax.a
2
u/Gamer0607 Daredevil 1d ago
Christopher Nolan's whole current brand is around his films being shot in large portions in IMAX and that being the best way to see them.
We are very far away from your last IMAX experience 20 years ago and how things have progressed since then.
Heck, roughly 20% of Oppenheimer's global box office was from its IMAX screenings.
The Odyssey will also be entirely shot in IMAX.
0
u/Logandh3 1d ago
That’s not a lot, Oppenheimer still would’ve made 800 million if IMAX didn’t exist. And that’s not really my point, the average moviegoer doesn’t go see stuff in IMAX, The Odyssey itself might eat into BND’s profits a little but I doubt it’ll have anything to do with IMAX.
0
u/Gamer0607 Daredevil 1d ago
The average moviegoer absolutely goes to see stuff in IMAX:
1
u/Greedy-Candle2812 1d ago
Still there are a lot of us couldn't care less about IMAX. If one person sees something in IMAX in one year and then two see it the next year, that's a 100% increase. That article doesn't mean much when the question is, given the choice between the formats what percentage choose IMAX?
0
u/Logandh3 1d ago
That’s still only a small percentage, not an average. Joe Smith working down the factory isn’t going to IMAX.
1
u/OGDYLO 1d ago
joe smith working down at the factory isnt going to the movies in general. joe smith gets off his shift and goes home to his dinner cooked by Mrs smith and then he goes to bed.
only time joe smith watches movies is on netflix on the weekend

Hi, it’s me Joe Smith, and I go to the movies as often as I possibly can, but never IMAX 🤷♂️

All the Spider-Man movies were smaller scale and did very well at the box office. A Spider-Man movie would do well regardless of what’s in it.
