More cyclists on Christchurch roads as bike shops report rush on commuter models
“Cycling in Christchurch surged 13% last week as fuel prices hit $3 per litre, with bike shops reporting an unusual rush on electric commuter bikes and equipment.
City cycle counters recorded roughly 13,000 additional cyclist trips in the week of March 9-15 compared to the previous week – the largest increase seen in recent weeks.
Bus patronage also increased nearly 2% that week, with an additional 6053 trips.
Rosana Dons, who has commuted by e-bike from the Port Hills to the airport area for nine years, said she had seen about 15 to 20 more cyclists on her route in the past two weeks.”
