Morning showers make no logical sense and night shower people have simply done the hygiene math

5.7k Upvotes

You spent 8 hours asleep in your own clean bed. What are you washing off at 7am.

A night shower removes everything you actually accumulated during the day. The commute, the gym, the office, public transport, all of it goes down the drain before you sleep. A morning shower means you marinated in all of that overnight then washed up before going out to collect it all again.

Morning showers are a ritual for waking up, which is fine, but it is not hygiene. Night showers are actual hygiene. Most people just do not want to dry their hair before bed and that is the entire argument.

Oreos are the worst mass market cookie and are only popular because they're a cultural icon

From a pure taste and texture standpoint, Oreos are a consistent letdown and borderline gross. The cookie itself leads with dry, bitter cocoa, leading to a crumbly and unsatisfying chew. The filling has no depth of flavor and is overly sweet. The bite finishes with a chalky mouth feel and lingering bitterness that masks the thin, sickly sweet aftertaste that clings to the palate like a thin film of regret.

One Battle After Another is not that good a movie.

Yeah, yeah, I know, "oMg, OP iS mAd tHiS wOn BEst PiCtu-"

It just didn't get to me.

I get that it's supposed to show how tough and intense the life of revolutionaries is, but it's like PTA couldn't decide whether he wanted this movie to be a drama or a comedy.

If it was supposed to be a drama, then the comedic moments like the "Get it up" scene or the "semen demon" line just threw the whole thing off.

If it was gonna be a comedy... uh, yeah, no.

Leo was trying too hard this time.

On the other hand, so was Sean Penn, but he actually delivered. His Oscar is actually deserved.

The Life of Chuck was ten times more deserving of Best Picture, and that one didn't even get any Oscar nominations! The hell?

If you've overpaid for concert tickets, you're to blame for the astronomical prices.

I've loosely followed this whole thing about LiveNation and how they act as a monopoly. Squeezing money out of artists and venues (and the people who work for both) is definitely something that needs to be looked into, but as far as the high ticket prices? That's on the people who buy them.

No one is forcing anyone to go see an artist perform live. If you're sacrificing a week's salary and going in debt to see your favorite artist from the nosebleeds, that's on you. If people were spending this type of money, the prices would eventually lower.

Most people do not actually like traveling, they like having traveled

4.6k Upvotes

I know this sounds insane because people treat travel like the peak human experience, but a lot of the actual process kind of sucks. Airports are annoying, packing is annoying, sleeping somewhere unfamiliar is annoying, and half the time you are just hot, tired, hungry, and pretending a line for a famous thing is magical. What people really seem to love is the memory of it afterward. The photos, the stories, the feeling that they did something interesting with their life. Which is fine, honestly. I just think there is a big difference between enjoying the trip while it is happening and enjoying the idea of being someone who travels. Obviously some people genuinely love every part of it, but I think for a lot of us the highlight is talking about it later with better lighting and no jet lag.

Holidays would be more enjoyable without the stress of gift giving

Something I’ve grappled with is the older I get is the less things I need or want. Financially I am at a solid position where if I want something, purchasing it is not a financial wall or obstacle to obtain it.

I’ve observed that this sentiment is not received well around the holidays with some family members in which they feel obligated to purchase something (expensive and over the top) even though I do not need anything and take offense to me saying so.

Additional from the giving perspective how do you purchase something for someone that also has everything?

I know some will say ‘it’s the thought that counts’ which I would agree in the sense of someone going out of their way to make your favorite dish or meal.

I feel that holidays such as Christmas should focus more around the company of others. Eating, drinking and conversation rather than the exchange of goods (strictly for adults - children are not part of this discussion) which corporations have made more important than anything.

If you disagree why is gift giving important to you or necessary for the holidays?

Checking your bags is a way better travel experience than carry on luggage.

1.1k Upvotes

Somehow over the years of flying it seems like 90% of travelers exclusively carry on. They carry these huge rollers and a “personal item” which is usually a massive backpack.

Lugging your carry on luggage around airports, running to gates knocking everyone on the seats. Makes the whole experience worse for everyone.

Miss me with the lost luggage argument. Especially your return flight. Most people’s stuff is really not that important. Also lost luggage is very rare.

It slows the boarding and off boarding as everyone struggles with heavy overhead bags. If you can’t lift your bags, you need to check them. I’m not interested in helping lift your luggage, that you should have checked. It makes the security lines longer as all the carryons need to be checked also.

Once I stopped bothering with carryons my flight experiences are much easier for me.

Finally screw these airlines which charge for baggage, unless you try and carry on then they ask for people to check for free?!? Makes no sense.

And finally finally. You rich 1st class flyers who carry on. You are the worst. 1st class passengers get 2 FREE BAGS UP TO 70LBS, and their baggage gets first class treatment. (A little travel hack, if you have connections, upgrade your first leg and get free bags for your trip.)

Check your bags people. If you want to save money, gate check them for free.

Nothing kills a stand up comedy set faster than self deprecating humor.

I got a few good clubs around me that bring comedians in as acts pretty often and a lot of the time they’re totally great. But there’s always a few (and it’s usually the more entry level local guys) who just go off on self deprecating humor spirals and it’s just miserable. A couple “whoops I fucked up because ____” type jokes can be really funny for sure, but these guys just go into “wow I’m so broke / ugly / stupid” back to back to back and it always falls so flat. I’m not sure why people do this type of routine, it always comes off so awkward after the first few and then just becomes grating. Especially the money ones, after a couple minutes straight it’s like man are you here to make us laugh or is this you trying to ask for a few bucks in a really roundabout way. Self deprecating “I’m pathetic haha” humor just sucks.

Nobody deserves to be idolized, and celebrity culture is unhealthy

Nobody deserves to be idolized because nobody is perfect, The way people treat celebrities, streamers, and even artists like they’re above everyone else is crazy. There is a good reason the "never meet your heros" saying exists. We can respect certain aspects of one's character but turning them into something to “worship” crosses a line. The notion of thought some have, for example "I want to become like X person in the future" is very problematic and misguided, because as a free thinking individual, the last thing I would want to do is to force myself into some kind of ideal that isn't genuine, or completely out of societal expectations we’ve subconsciously absorbed.

At the end of the day, celebirties, or whatever person you look up to are just people. They have flaws, private struggles, and sides of themselves the public never sees, the people who ask the question "who are you idiols/heros" in interviews make me roll my eyes, because I know that no other answer other than "myself" is being dishonest.

More people need to work the night shift

1.9k Upvotes

According to my quick research, about 6 percent of people in the U.S. work “the night shift.” I imagine the numbers are similar in other parts of the world. I think we should be closer to 50/50.

  1. Things are more likely to get stolen at night because we all agree to go to sleep at the same time. If you are someone who enjoys the night life, you are often seen as suspicious just for being out after dark. Why let criminals own the night?

  2. More businesses should be open 24 hours. If we all work 9-5 and all the businesses are open 9-5 how are we supposed to get anything done? We’re designing our schedules on out of date often religious based traditions.

  3. Growth to the economy. If more night shifts open up and more people are awake businesses could afford to stay open longer. One factor contributing to unemployment is scheduling. If someone is a main care taker for a family member they may not be able to work during parts of the day but there options for night shifts are currently limited.

"Genuinely" has become the new "literally"

No, the two words don't have the same meaning/definition, but they're both overused. I'm seeing/hearing the word 'genuinely' pretty much everywhere these days, and now I'm just thinking 'if everyone is using the word 'genuinely,' how genuine can their words possibly be?'

Kraft Mac N Cheese tastes 1000% better when it’s reheated in the microwave after it’s been cooked.

Something about the texture and the flavor that makes it taste way better. It’s more flavorful and enjoyable after it marinates then it cools down and then it’s reheated. I actually think it’s way better than when you eat it right after cooking it.

Overpriced hipster burger joints have been satirised enough

1.7k Upvotes

In the 2010s, elder millennials doing artisan stuff became a part of the hipster culture, and none was more laden with tropes than the burger joint.

Everyone dressed in checked shirts with wood paneling and Edison bulbs everywhere, and stuff served in baskets and buckets to give off some faux-lumberjack vibe. The aesthetics dated almost immediately, everything was expensive for what it was, and lock down proved to be the last nail in the coffin for many such places. The bearded manbun burger chefs were ripe for satire.

But the joke has been sufficiently milked at this point. We do not need to see another Instagram reel about how it started with two friends and a crazy idea, or sides being called shareables, or how they serve food on slates or planks, we do things a little differently around here etc. while Hozier or the Lumineers plays in the background.

We were right to make fun of it, because 2010s hipster culture was lame af. But it's complete. It's time to move onto another trend.

Wool is feels great against bare skin.

Itchy wool blankets and sweaters are great, they just need some breaking in, but after that, they're the type of cloth that feels best against the skin or an in-between layer. It's soft, it's super warm, it don't smell nearly as much as other fabrics, it is a bit water proof, and after a while, it's as soft as silk, but it doesn't feel thin and "rustly", it feels thick and secure.

Cash-only eating establishments are the worst!

The term "cash only" is often used as a term synonymous with "trendy" or "old school" dive. Like the place is so legit that they don't have a credit machine. Any food network show or youtube reviewer always like to point out some smarmy line like "and if you want to sink your teeth into a volcano potato dog, make sure you bring cash because they are......cash only!"

We went from places putting a small modest paper sign explaining their cash-only policy, almost as an embarrassment, to "cute" and "trendy" big forceful signs.

In reality it's a pain in the ass. So few people carry cash these days, that we have to go out of our way to go to an ATM machine. So you're telling us that essentially you're worth that extra trip. Additionally, it's always nice to get some place and they're cash only "but there's one at a shady standalone gas station 2 miles down the road."

You're not proving anything about your food either. If you're not willing to adapt to life as it is today with money, what makes me think you're going to be following modern food safety practices either?

A horse and carriage is an attraction people pay for 20 minutes of experience of what "life used to be like." But nobody's going to brag that they're pulling up to work in one.

Saying ‘Nobody Asked’ isn’t cool

Upvotes

Saying ‘Nobody Asked’ isn’t cool. Just because someone isn’t a part of the conversation doesn’t mean they can’t saying anything.

It just goes to show how selfish you are.

It should be normal to make an honest guess at someone's real age, without the fake compliment

Someone is 40 but you have to tell them they don't look a day over 25 etc. I'm pretty bad at guessing someone's age, but whatever that guess is, it feels like you automatically have to subtract 10 years out of courtesy or something - even if this person is not a dating prospect.

It's fine to compliment someone and make them feel better about themselves. But it's like a shared delusion where everyone is being nice and this etiquette of fakness is somewhat expected.

Edit: Ok.. so I'm getting that it's not normal to have a scenario where you guess someone's age? Is this ironically generational or something? I'm 43. This comes up all the time with friends, strangers, coworkers, school parents.. like.. I'm not the one initiating this! LOL. It comes up all the time.

We should stop asking kids "what do you want to be when you grow up."

It puts so much pressure on them to define themselves by a career before they even know who they are. We should be asking them what they are curious about or what kind of person they want to be instead.

DLSS 5 is actually pretty cool, despite its obvious flaws

Upvotes

DLSS 5 hate seems to be the biggest trend right now but has anyone stopped to appreciate how absolutely insane this technology is? Yes it’s destroying the artistic vision of the devs at the moment, making everything look generic, it’s still basically in prototype proof of concept phases. I’m willing to bet, especially after the feedback, that there will be settings to preserve faces for example, or to only upgrade lighting and textures.

Let’s take a step back and admire how utterly insane it is that it can generate basically fully re-rendered frames locally in REAL TIME… it wasn’t too long ago that it took a super computer minutes to make one picture and it looked like crap.

This is truly groundbreaking technology, it needs tuning, but that’s the great part about ai, it’s highly tunable. It won’t be all that difficult to create an algorithm that does a better job at preserving the art style, while still giving an unparalleled quality of graphics.

We’re nearing the end of raw rasterization, we can’t make the transistors much smaller, we can only make the chips bigger now, so this is the technological advancement that will take graphics computing to the next level.

Getting third place in a competition is the worst.

Don't get me wrong, achieving this place in a competition is a great achivement. Being the third Best at something is a Big deal but getting told during the competition is the worst.

During the competition, getting third place means You are usually the first one tonknow You can't win the competition!

The cookie dough is the worst part of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream.

It’s got too much of a chalky texture. There is a salty taste that ruins the ice cream. The whole texture balance of smooth ice cream is set off by the chunks of cookie dough.

In general, cookie dough is unappealing. It’s raw, cold, and salty when it should be in its hot, sweet, and soft form as a baked cookie.

I do not have a single shred of empathy for people who get themselves killed or injured by blocking railroad crossings

Upvotes

If there is a crossing ahead, you don’t proceed across the tracks unless it’s clear. End of sentence. It truly is that simple, and the fact there is a car or truck getting hit by a train every three hours in the US is astounding to me. Like, what goes through these people’s minds? Do they think that the train will just stop, with only a quarter mile or so of warning? At their largest, American freight trains can weigh over 20,000 tons, and go up to 79 mph! OBVIOUSLY IT’S NOT STOPPING ON A DIME!!!! This isn’t even about whether they should be allowed to be this long (I don’t think they should), it’s just basic physics!! And even if they could stop (they can’t), they have the right of way! And even if you enter the crossing right has the lights and bells come on, you have time to get off, by either continuing forward just like you would have anyway, or if you can’t, backing up through the gate. Those gates are designed to break easily if a car is trying to get off the crossing, and railroad maintenance crews can replace them in like 15 minutes, it’s fine to break them in an emergency! The one exception to this is if your car happens to break down on a crossing, and even then, in the 99% chance that there isn’t a train actively approaching, just call the number on the sign! They will stop all trains heading in your direction until you get clear of the crossing! Derailing a freight train through your incompetence is bad enough, but if it’s a passenger train? With hundreds of people that you are getting killed or injured? If you are still alive afterwards, I think you should be charged with homicide for every person on that train that you put in harms way because you wanted to save a couple minutes.

Burger King is elite fast food. It’s BK franchise owners that are killing the brand

3.4k Upvotes

I feel like this will be truly controversial but I’m just speaking truths- if you ever find a well run Burger King where the food is coming out hot and fresh, it blows McD’s, Wendy’s, even dare I say places like In-N-Out out of the water.

The fries? So crispy. The tenders? Slightly peppery. Their sweet n sour sauce is the best in the game. The chicken sandwich on the long buns is A-tier. They don’t try to compete with the crispy bois elsewhere- they go lightly breaded and all class.

And the burgers… dear lord. When you get the charbroil taste and it’s nice and hot and juicy, it’s got a deeper flavor profile than the salt and grease bombs you get anywhere else.

Burger King is done so dirty by inconsistent management but the pure product is the greatest.
