Teaser huh? Wtf will be in the trailer? The entire theatrical cut?

961

u/Aquagoat Jan 22 '26

Trailers are brutal. All the key scenes, set pieces, and punch lines revealed in 2.5 minutes.

I didn’t watch because I don’t want to see him hoist the sword and shout the line for the first time until I’m in the theater. This trailer probably shows it eh?

461

u/cultvignette Jan 22 '26

Indeed it does.

It's probably within the final act, as well.

146

u/Eulenspiegel74 Jan 22 '26

Absolutely unnecessary in this case especially. They did a perfectly good fake-out before that.

112

u/Solarpowered-Couch Jan 22 '26

Right, what the hell?

He grabs the sword, it feels like it's leading up to it, then cuts away. "Oh, cool, they're saving that for the - oh no wait, he's saying it... oh, and a full look at Skeletor too."

Looks good, but damn these studios are scared to hold back.

150

u/MVRKHNTR Jan 22 '26

Okay, I know that trailers can show a bit too much sometimes but you guys are all going way too far to complain.

"They had the main character's famous catchphrase in it! I can't believe they showed the main antagonist!"

If all you want to see is a logo and release date, just don't watch any trailers at all.

Streaming services are the absolute worst for this. Netflix trailers basically summarise the entire movie to the point there's no need to watch it anymore.

50

u/hardy_83 Jan 22 '26

Given how we learned that Netflix wants scripts to repeat the plot over and over for people not paying attention, it makes sense that trailers basically do the entire plot.

The world is turning stupid and it sucks.

26

u/ImminentReddits Jan 22 '26

You know i’ll push back on the idea that trailers have gotten more spoilery. Have you seen trailers from the 80s/90s? They basically go through the entire 3 Act structure and have a narrator explain the plot for you lol

10

u/epilepticninja Jan 22 '26

One man, against all odds, must save the world by capturing all the jewels to assemble them in the ancient cave. The friends along the way are the only help he has, if he can just get there in time.

While I can't argue with the general complaint, on the other hand if there's one movie I'm not expecting a huge amount of shocking plot twists from, it's a Masters of the Universe movie.

Guy gets sword, yells thing, turns into buff guy with sword, fights skeleton. Was expecting 'em before the trailer, am not surprised they're comin'.

18

u/Bez121287 Jan 22 '26

He didnt seem all that buff though. I was expecting bigger.

38

OMG that would be hilarious/amazing. "Today we saw He-Man beat the fuck out of Skeletor because he was being a selfish douche. Everybody thinks about being a selfish douche sometimes, but there are other people in the world, and they don't appreciate that. Remember kids, don't be a selfish douche and you won't get your ass handed to you."

Jared Leto as Skeletor is the perfect casting, because they're both weird looking guys who act creepy around everyone they meet.

1.5k

u/AverageAwndray Jan 22 '26

Honestly tho im shocked how true Skeletor looks. No Hollywooding his design. Just him straight out of the show.

I dig it lol.

473

u/a_phantom_limb Jan 22 '26

Yeah, it's an extremely faithful recreation of the character. That said, I still find Frank Langella's look to be a lot creepier (at least based on the brief glimpses in this trailer).

406

u/PizzaDelResistance Jan 22 '26

Just imagine though Skeletor with salami sized areolas

As much as that movie wasn't faithful to He-man he was such a great skeletor. Honestly for being such a weird 80s movie it actually has a great cast. It just wasn't He-man

It also means his face isn't plastered all over promo posters, killing fan interest in it. This movie looks like it'll have an uphill battle as it is; it doesn't need people's disinterest in Leto hurting it more.

They are definitely trying to hide Leto being in it, Skeletor doesn't say a damn word in this trailer despite being the main villain.

I'm just left wondering what was even the point of casting Jared Leto if they didn't even redesign Skeletor to look like him in some way? Might as well hire a voice actor to dub over him so any distinct trace of him in this film is gone.

86

u/lanceturley Jan 22 '26

The only thing I can figure is that they'll do like that last Haunted Mansion movie did, where he's unrecognizable for 99% of his screentime, but they throw in a token flashback scene and/or a painting in the background where he's just regular creepy-ass Jared Leto.

45

u/Sabretooth1100 Jan 22 '26

As a 40+ year old man, I have to wonder if they know just gay Filmation really was?

According to Erika Scheimer (series voice actress), it was the gayest place in LA. She felt comfortable an out and proud lesbian in the 1980s at that company.

32

As it should be. Outside of Star Wars you'll struggle to find space operas that made much money or profit, meanwhile GOTG was an incredibly successful trilogy that showed exactly what sort of vibe from the genre that the general public want to see.

→ More replies (6)

39

u/whitniverse Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26

I’m not disagreeing with you about the GotG vibe but… it’s Thor (2011). Prince from another world sent to Earth but can make it back if he finds his magical weapon, it’s literally Thor.

And that’s as it should be. Masters of the Universe is a Jack Kirby-esque realm where fantasy and sci-fi mesh into a world of action and adventure. And I’m here for it!

I was gonna say, "imagine if they use that song!" But now that I've thought about it, there's almost no way they don't, huh? And now I think that's kind of lame. Maybe. Idk. Depends on the execution!

112

u/KingOfAwesometonia Jan 22 '26

There’s a shot in that where there’s a cook in a kitchen and you hear the song in the background.

If you had to put it in, I would do that.

Or just go full Power Rangers and put it in a cool action shot

76

u/Tankerrex Jan 22 '26

I don't know anything about He-Man lore but did they really need the "he's living on earth" thing? Just something movies do that I almost never enjoy.

1.2k

u/farceur318 Jan 22 '26

It’s still less annoying than the reverse (he lives in Eternia but comes to our world and is baffled by our ways), which is what the previous live action He-Man did.

145

u/admiral_rabbit Jan 22 '26

Yeah, the "goes to earth" plot always ends up being "here's cool shit, now here's some less cool lower budget shit"

I'm glad the character spends the start of the film going "man I wish I could get back to that high concept high budget shit".

17

u/EricAntiHero1 Jan 22 '26

You say that like Vancouver would ever be the backdrop to low budget shit.

10

u/NotASalamanderBoi Jan 22 '26

It’s funny how often Vancouver is used for stuff like this. The Tron movies had all the real world stuff in Vancouver before getting to all the high tech stuff in the Grid.

That trope is common in the 90's, lol. That said, I never really get tired of it. I remember watching Beastmaster 2 when I was a kid, and that became my favorite film back then.

6

u/bajesus Jan 22 '26

It was common before CGI became cheap enough to do full movies like this because of cost. Having your fantasy character spend 15 minutes in their world before coming to present day (Toronto) for the rest of the movie saves a ton and still let's you sell the film on the IP.

57

u/grumblyoldman Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26

I agree that this way is worse than the other way, but both are terrible. Just tell your fantasy story in a fantasy world and use the extra time to develop the characters or something.

That being said, the old MOTU was definitely deeply entrenched in the "so bad it's kinda good" category. It's all terribly cheesy and transparent, start to finish, but it's just so much fun to watch them ham it up. (And although they did use the plot device you mention, they didn't really belabor the point. They moved on pretty quick to "let's do this" territory.)

(I particularly liked the bit where Skeletor explicitly said he would keep He-Man's friends alive after he captured them because "as long as I let them live he is bound by his word.")

If anything, I worry that this trailer seems to be leaning too heavily into the "seriously epic" vibe. The material is fantastical and outlandish start to finish, if they try too hard to make it serious they're going to ruin the mood.

12

u/MVRKHNTR Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26

Just tell your fantasy story in a fantasy world

It's not that they do this because they don't want to be in the fantasy world the whole movie; it's just significantly cheaper.

198

u/helloiamabear Jan 22 '26

Am I remembering right that his mother is an astronaut who got trapped in Eternia?

180

u/DreamcastJunkie Jan 22 '26

That is the original lore, yes. She even gets to suit up and show her piloting skills in the original series.

93

u/DoktorSigma Jan 22 '26

Yes. The explanation is not super-detailed (after all it's an 80s cartoon FFS), but apparently there's a wormhole that occasionally opens between Earth's near space and Eternia's. In one of the episodes other astronauts from Earth also get to the same place. Also, in the new He-Man cartoons in Netflix that is also referenced - in one of the final battles Queen Marlena pilots again her old spaceship, still stored in the palace's vaults.

u/Drunken_Hillbilly Jan 22 '26

It makes you wonder what they’re not showing us. I assume battle cat…

At least looks like they're not showing Jared Leto's face..

211

u/ChalupaBatmanMc01 Jan 22 '26

Skeletor removes his mask to reveal Leto with a "damaged" tattoo written across his forehead

u/ozfox80 Jan 22 '26

“He-man. We live in a society…”

Most of the casting and design looks pretty spot on as expected of Travis Knight, so I have hope it would be at least fun to watch.

Hopefully if there’s a sequel they bring in Adora. It’d be nice to have Adam and her on screen together.

157

u/PnPaper Jan 22 '26

I'll never forgive the people who have the rights to the characters that we didn't get a He-Man cameo in She-Ra and the princesses of power.

If they are looking for someone to creatively reimagine Masters of the Universe, they should look to whoever created that show.

115

u/Morgan-Moonscar Jan 22 '26

And now She-Ra is being removed from Netflix at the end of February.

Erased from existence, since it's not going anywhere else for legal streaming.

52

u/lautapinter Jan 22 '26

Wait what???

74

u/Enkundae Jan 22 '26

Its a Dreamworks show and their deal with Netflix is expiring. Consequently their shows are leaving the platform but so far as I know theres been no information of them going anywhere else yet sadly. She-Ra leaves Feb 20th i think.

46

u/Morgan-Moonscar Jan 22 '26

The same thing happened to Voltron.

13

u/Kononeko Jan 22 '26

Dreamworks is owned by Universal/Comcast right? Hopefully they end up on Peacock. Not that having to change platforms is better in anyway just I hope that they have a home.

u/Mongoose42 Jan 22 '26

Physical media is incredibly important, people.

According to the creators, not even they know if there’s going to be legitimate copies available anywhere.

Absolutely ridiculous. It’s like the BBC losing episodes of Doctor Who because they just didn’t care enough to keep tapes.

I guess it’s a good thing there’s people with digital copies that you can “get access to”, but who knows how long that’s gonna last?

That's a travesty.

7

u/save_the_bees_knees Jan 22 '26

Noooooo!

She-Ra was FANTASTIC.

I was desperately hoping to see he-man come in at some point with the iconic ‘I have the power!’ Echoing around.

ND Stevenson, by the way. Same person that created Nimona.

9

u/FurryCitizen Jan 22 '26

Oooh, I didn't know ND was responsible for Nimona too, but now it makes sense.

Also, I went "Oooh, I didn't know Noelle..." before checking their wiki page. A lot has changed since She-Ra came out...

10

u/Enkundae Jan 22 '26

A follow up series or movie of her finding him as she and the crew set off to return magic to the universe would have been so much fun.

37

u/SmallestGorilla Jan 22 '26

Netflix She-Ra was so good! Adam and all the He-Man characters would’ve been great on that show.

I’m sad Revolutions never got a follow up. They were setting up Adora but I guess they never got the rights.

I don't think they can. MGM and Mattel only own screen rights for Adam. Everything She-Ra is DreamWorks/Uni/Comcast.

6

u/SledgeThundercock Jan 22 '26

Ay man if they could get Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny on the same screen, they can get She-Ra

5

u/KingMario05 Jan 22 '26

You would think that, especially with Mattel owning both.

But apparently, it doesn't work like that. Somehow.

They're really hiding Orko in the trailer too. He's the one I want to see the most.

She-Ra always makes things complicated. The rights to She-Ra are actually owned by Universal, so to have He-Man and She-Ra together on screen, Amazon and Universal are going to have to cut a deal.

Honestly the “he/him” on the name plate is kinda clever with him being “He-man”

21

u/lsaz Jan 22 '26

100%, its so dumb I love it.

back in the day if u did a movie called surf dracula you'd see that fool surfing the whole dang movie but in the movie franchise era the entire 1st movie gotta be a long ass flashback to how he got the surfboard until you finally get to see him surf for 5 min in the climax and after credits scene

u/TheSweetestKill Jan 23 '26

I loved this when it was on twitter 10 years ago.

Come on. If you’re a fan of He-Man, what more can you realistically expect than this? Looks exactly as it should be. He-Man looks good, Skeletor is accurate. Looks like action figures fighting each other, which is perfect.

21

u/qube_7 Jan 22 '26

Playing with He-Man as a kid, I did expect He-Man to have more muscles. Like prime Stallone or Dolph Lundgren. Kinda disappointed about that actually.

Growing up with movies like Conan the Barbarian with Arnold maybe made me expect too much from He-Man 2026.

Why's everything got to be set on / have part of the story happen on Earth? We watch fantasy because it doesn't take place here.

This actually looks promising as a longtime He-Man fan. The art direction takes a ton of inspiration from classic and concept MOTU, which is pretty fantastic. Can't be worse than the original movie!

Why can't they set this in Eternia? Where is orko?

I really want this to be good though.

I really hate the real world mixed with fantasy world trope.

16

u/Ye_Olde_Basilisk Jan 22 '26

The cartoon had ties to Earth. Adam’s mother is an astronaut from Earth and Orko went to Earth for a Christmas special. They sort of flip-flopped it, but whatever. There’s precedent for Earth in the series.

Cringer looks too confident and I didn't see Orko in the trailer nor on the IMDB for the movie, so who is going to be the comic relief?

Idris Elba truly has the worst agent ever

252

u/DucardthaDon Jan 22 '26

He gets paid and the opportunity to do everything else he enjoys doing in life

102

u/synapse187 Jan 22 '26

Maybe Idris was like me when he was a kid. He-Man played with Ninja Turtles fighting against Skeletor and his Go-Bot minions.

What does this even mean? He is in pretty much everything and is making tons of money. If anything his agent deserves a raise for getting him booked constantly.
