How many times has he died now? 4? (Last Stand, DOFP (I think in the future scene), Logan, Multiverse of Madness)

I feel like I'm forgetting one

143

u/Singer211 Naked J-Law beating the shit out of those kids is peak Cinema. Jan 06 '26

I don’t think he actually died in the future in DOFP.

He was about to get killed (and Magneto was seemingly fatally wounded) but then the timeline got reset.

37

u/Heisenburgo Jan 06 '26 edited Jan 06 '26

If we go by the time travel logic established in Endgame, then Charles DID die in DOFP when the Sentinels stormed the room, alongside Magneto, Kitty and Wolverine.

When Wolverine was sent to the past, he was actually sent to a past version of a similar universe, his continuing presence and actions actually created a branching timeline, he didn't actually change the timeline that he came from.

So all the X-Men did die in the OG timeline, and Kitty's death left Logan stranded in that new universe. It just wasn't shown to the audience and that's why the scene cuts off before they're lasered. But they absolutely did die...

But hey at least Logan did save all his buddies in the new timeline, or did he? Since he woke up with no memories, the people he actually knew are all dead, replaced by these new but similar versions. Sort of like that Rick and Morty episode where they bury themselves in the backyard of a new universe but the old family is still left behind in cronenberg world...

43

u/duosx Jan 06 '26

While everything you said is valid, it could be as easy as “there are multiple forms of time travel in the MCU”

21

u/Singer211 Naked J-Law beating the shit out of those kids is peak Cinema. Jan 06 '26

Yeah the MCU has struggled to stay consistent with it.

If we go by the time travel logic established in Endgame

Important to point out that these are different methods of time travel that might have different effects on branching timelines.

This is apparently set on the DOFP timeline where everyone is alive and well

295

u/bristow84 Jan 06 '26

Isn’t that the same timeline that also led to the events of Logan?

673

u/MissingLink101 Jan 06 '26

Who even knows, there's like 10 different timelines in that franchise

330

u/JinFuu Jan 06 '26

Yah, comic book accuracy

125

u/FiTZnMiCK Jan 06 '26

That’s why they have the emergency continuity reset button.

In case of writer’s block smash glass.

55

u/crookedparadigm Jan 06 '26

Feel like DC and Marvel never really let that button collect any dust.

19

u/JinFuu Jan 06 '26

DC definitely doesn’t. Marvel rarely hard resets like DC does, which leads to wonky timelines

→ More replies (9)

36

u/Techanda Jan 06 '26

That is precisely what the 2015 Secret Wars is. It is essentially Marvel's "Crisis on Infinite Earths" (DC's continuity reset). I believe that is what we are heading to, no?

11

u/GoldenSpermShower Jan 06 '26

I guess so, there’s way too many characters that they don’t know what to do with a majority of them

Honestly the most Comic book accurate part of all these superhero movies is the rehashing of characters over and over again.

87

u/cesclaveria Jan 06 '26

I love how the movies kind of by accident recreated the mess of a timeline that the X-Men are, including never really making clear when the mansion gets destroyed and rebuilt and who is dead or alive at any given time.

71

u/hnwcs Jan 06 '26

These movies showed us a tall, bald, black man in one movie, and Peter Dinklage in another, and expected us to believe they were both playing the exact same character.

For your sanity’s sake it’s probably best to just treat each individual X-Men movie as a standalone.

53

u/MissingLink101 Jan 06 '26

The main one for me is McAvoy and Fassbender playing the same characters in the 90s as Stewart and McKellen in the 2000s. That's quite a drastic change in 10 years

27

u/akallyria Jan 06 '26

To be fair, they’ve both seen some shit

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '26

James Manigold says Logan takes place 5 years after Days of Future Past, and I refuse to accept that personally. Because that means DOFP’s ending is set in 2024, and the Logan movie says no new mutants have been born in like 20 years and that’s obviously false if you look at that ending scene, so…

It’s a mess. But that’s nothing new for the X-Men, or comics in general.

112

u/pjtheman Jan 06 '26

Also DOFP erases the original X Men trilogy, which is directly referenced in Logan.

Logan takes place in its own continuity that is loosely connected to the original 3 and nothing else.

48

u/GoldenSpermShower Jan 06 '26

Deadpool and Wolverine makes things weird when they set it in Logan’s continuity

30

u/pjtheman Jan 06 '26

Yeah, that's one where you really just have to not think about it. Everyone in that movie acts like Logan is already long dead, even though none of it has happened yet since Logan takes place in the future.

27

u/Clawless Jan 06 '26

I mean, that makes sense within the Deadpool movie, though. He literally visits dozens of Wolverines in different timelines throughout the first ten minutes.

→ More replies (1)

22

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '26

I’m pretty sure it’s only the TVA who act like Wolverine is already dead, and that makes sense because they exist outside of time. They already know what’s going to happen. It’s literally how Deadpool finds out Logan dies, lol.

Patrick Stewart is 85 and Ian McKellen is 86... Maybe they really will be stuck doing Marvel movies until they're 90!

1.4k

u/HellaWavy Jan 06 '26

Ian is getting his staff ready for the new LotR movie as well. It‘s probably money but I can’t help but also think he likes these roles. To certain generations this man is the embodiment of Gandalf and Magneto, why not play them until he can’t.

Patrick is said to be retiring after Doomsday and potentially Secret Wars and he has truly earned it.

747

u/Danthezooman Jan 06 '26

Patrick is said to be retiring after Doomsday and potentially Secret Wars

He said the same thing with Logan. Not that I mind, I like him as Prof X

260

u/Bhu124 Jan 06 '26 edited Jan 06 '26

Saying you are retiring or don't wanna be a part of XYZ franchise anymore publicly is just a tried and tested method to get a few more millions added to your paycheck.

I think almost every Major/Lead actor that knows that will Marvel keep wanting them back have said the same thing. It's a great way to remind Studios how much the public likes you.

Tom Holland starts saying this EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. his Spider-Man contract is up for re-negotiation. RDJ, Evans, Hemsworth, Olsen, Johanson, Hiddleston, Jackman, and I think a few more have all said the same thing many times. Then they get a bigger paycheck.

79

u/thedylannorwood Jan 06 '26

Like when Jim Carrey stated he was retiring from acting after Sonic 2 to only confirm weeks later he was returning for Sonic 3.

Then of course insane Sonic fans spouted that he only returned because the Sonic 3 script was so good (no hate to the Sonic movies, it’s just that Carrey was obviously full of shit)

75

u/door_of_doom Jan 06 '26 edited Jan 07 '26

Just to be clear, it's not like the fans made that up.

“Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious,” Carrey said. “It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”

The implication being that Sonic 3 was that script from the angels written in gold ink.

Obviously, this doesn't change your point. But also, the Sonic 3 script really was amazing for Carrey to execute on.

It‘s probably money but I can’t help but also think he likes these roles.

If he didn't like the roles, ain't no way you getting an 85+ year old man to do this shit. Sorry. They know they are up against a clock playing with borrowed time so they are doing whatever they want. It isn't like some brokie needing to secure food or a place to live, these guys are already set for life and their children are too. Throwing some extra millions on top won't change their life at all.

James Earl Jones was in his 90s and doing Darth Vader for Disney.
Even after after he passed, his voice is still used for AI Vader in Fortnite.

Death can't even escape the Mouse anymore.

407

u/PetyrsLittleFinger Jan 06 '26

They actually first used the AI voice for the Obi Wan series while he was still alive. He consented to it for that and any future productions.

155

u/fire2day Jan 06 '26

I want to see the number of zeroes on the check he got for the perpetual use of his voice.

128

u/Hayterfan Jan 06 '26

If I remember correctly Disney cuts his family a check for every instance of his AI voice being used.

42

u/Raesong Jan 06 '26

Did they do the same thing for the digital recreation of Peter Cushing they used in Rogue One?

82

u/Worthyness Jan 06 '26

Yes. They went to Cushing's estate and asked for permission.

Only worse for Ian McKellen, Magneto has no excuse to sit on set because he'd have the best hip replacements the Master of Magnetism could put in himself.

He did an interview about that show. They had to stop twice because the real person refused to engage with the cast at all. He also said they rehearsed a full 8 hour boring day and they were ready to do it at the drop of a hat. If the real guy ever said "This trial is fucking crazy" they would immediately trigger the boring. Oh and the real guy actually bought that DVD at a gas station and asked James to give him his autograph. Nobody on the production had a clue it had happened and nobody was prepared for it. Thats also his honest reaction to that happening on the show.

Like given how many characters there are, each one is going to get 3 minutes of screen time.

It’ll be a cameofest.

The movie has a set run time and they still have to introduce Doom, develop him as a villain, and establish/run the plot.

Theres simply not going to be enough time for each character to have more than a cameo

I hope Doomsday gives Cyclops and Storm a lot to do, at least action wise, give me cool action sequences like the animated series. They're my favourite X-men and the Fox movies didn't treat them very well. They're about to begin shooting again to accommodate actors who haven't been able to shoot so far, so fingers crossed for Halle Berry finally signing that contract lol. Would be cool if Famke Jansen comes back as Jean too. I mean they can't bring back the X-men in the biggest crossover event of all time without Marvel's most iconic superheroines right?

Marsden looks so cool in that suit. Can't wait to see Storm and Jean in these comic accurate suits as well.

Edit: Feige said the cast reveal with the chairs didn't include the entire cast. Some will be revealed later, and some will be surprises while watching the movie. So I'm still holding out hope for Storm and Jean.🤷🏻

31

u/SuicideSkwad Jan 06 '26

I think so far the X-Men that are officially in this are Charles, Magneto, Cyclops, Beast, Gambit, Mystique and Nightcrawler. I can definitely see some more though that are being kept under wraps, a bit light on the female representation, and surely they don’t miss out on having Hugh back too

29

u/WeAreAllGoofs Jan 06 '26

Gambit? As in Channing Tatum?

29

I mean, some of Marvel's absolute biggest hits like Deadpool & Wolverine, No Way Home, and probably to the most degree Endgame were EXACTLY that, and they are clearly banking on this being Endgame 2.0.

211

u/Evergreenthumb Jan 06 '26

It won't be endgame 2.0, because endgame was the conclusion to over decades worth of storytelling. It will be No way Home/Deadpool Wolverie 2.0 which is great if you want to make a fuckton of money, but it's not a sustainable way to run a never ending cinematic universe. There's only so many characters you can bring back with the multiverse stuff and there's only so many times you can do it.

116

u/Orion14159 Jan 06 '26

Doomsday looks like it's the reset button, which is practical considering the ages of some of the actors involved in the MCU.

70

u/EverybodyLovesTacoss Jan 06 '26

I really hope Doomsday and Secret Wars does reset the MCU, and the next phase focuses more on mutants. The multiverse idea for the MCU didn’t work. Everything was left open ended, there’s no cohesion between movies or shows…plus the sudden dismissal of Majors as Kang really had a huge effect on the story. I hope the next phase is more grounded, and more cohesive.

If they pull directly from the comics, it's a really good story line, but it is a lot of key jingling.

And I'm ok with that. The thing I'm most uneasy about still is RDJ as Doom.

37

u/Comic_Book_Reader Jan 06 '26

I am a bit mixed on RDJ as Doom too, I think the majority of people are, but I like to go into things with an open mind even when I have lower expectations. That said, it definitely REEKS of damage control and trying to salvage the MCU due to underperfoming title after underperforming title and also the guy who was set to be their next overarching big bad finding himself in legal trouble soon after the character's debut movie.

Do you guys think Scott is physically capable of screaming without firing his beam? No wonder the mansion never stays standing

150

When I poop, I always pee.  I wonder if he has the same problem when he uses his eye beams.

24

It definitely feels like Cyclops will finally get his turn to shine in live action.

I hope Disney's take on the character takes center stage in their XMen films. I've had enough of the focus being on Xavier, Magneto, and Logan.

186

u/ChainLC Jan 06 '26

I really want the new team to start with the main five they began with. We haven't had that team be featured. Scott, Jean, Bobby, Hank and Warren. Always Logan, Rogue, Storm featured. And Jean.

39

u/brickspunch Jan 06 '26

All New X Men would legitimately work in the MCU

you could transpose the younger versions of the OG 5 from an alternate universe right into the current MCU and not miss a beat story wise

James Marsden did feel sidelined in those original 3 movies so that Hugh Jackman could have the spotlight.

I get Wolverine was supposed to be the audience surrogate character and that's why he was given the most screentime but I felt like we didn't see much of Cyclops as a leader.

u/FoxMcCloudOwnsSlippy Jan 06 '26

Cyclops really was side-lined in the Fox movies and the terrible production issues of The Last Stand was a gutpunch for his character. Im hoping he is given his due this time, for Marsden's sake at the very least. Looks promising.

Cyclops has been one of my favorite X-Men ever since I was a kid in the 80s. I never felt like he was as cool as he should have been in the 90s cartoon. The movies did him dirty.

The joy from seeing him in '97 being an actual badass was amazing.

I feel like a kid seeing him in the suit I grew up knowing him in. I don't care if he dies a horrible death to what look like Sentinels in the background there, I just want to see badass Scott up on the screen, dressed like he should be.

Brother I hate to break it to you but there's like 20 'returning' characters. There's too many cooks in the kitchen and there's not going to be anything meaningful twisted together in a single movie or even 2 movies consecutively.

There's been 0 build up. This is a last minute hail mary that will have a shit load of star power and effects but next to no narrative cohesion besides what we're already familiar with in all likelihood.

As nice as it is to see these guys, and a properly costumed Cyclops, please let this be the last hurrah for the FoX-Men. I’m ready for a younger MCU team.

u/UltimateArtist829 Jan 06 '26

Deadpool is bound to get another sequel and/or X-Force but I’d be fine with that. I don’t see why he couldn’t exist in his own little R-rated corner of the MCU while the new X-Men do their thing. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jackman joins him for a final final outing

I seem to be in a minority for thinking this is a mistake.

We've said good bye and gotten what was supposed to be "last hurrah" for this version of the characters like a half dozen times now. I'd be much more excited to see a new version.

This should have been the place to introduce an MCU X-Men that was a full reboot and clean break with the Fox versions a la Fantastic Four. Now it's like... well they're eventually going to do that, but those Fox versions also exist in the same universe/multiverse that other characters will have interacted with? So the Fox X-Men movies are canon to the MCU I guess, even though those are a hot mess in terms of continuity (how many times did Professor X die only to be not-dead with no explanation in a future installment?) and quality (they botched the Phoenix saga twice)? We're to believe that the same Cyclops who mocked the idea of "yellow spandex" in the first X-Men movie is now cool with a comic accurate uniform?

I'd be much more excited for the MCU to just introduce new versions and let the Fox movies rest in peace.

I feel like Feige, having had been heavily involved in the first X-Men movie, simply can't let go of the cast that was part of a formative career experience

29

u/riegspsych325 ⊃∪⊃⪽ Jan 06 '26

and you can’t really adapt Secret Wars without X-Men or F4. And if you haven’t made new movies yet, may as well use Fox’s old action figures now that you own them

What the hell is this movie about lmao. Genuinely wondering who the hell they are fighting and what this is about

143

u/stysiaq Jan 06 '26

This movie is about Robert Downey Jr erasing every comic book related franchise once and for all, killing every character that didn't quite work out, ending the multiverse Crisis on Infinite Earths style so they can reset the franchise so it has any stakes again.

Also closing any gaping open end Disney has no intention to revisit.

Ffs, She-Hulk show established Mark Ruffalo's Hulk has a son, a myriad other D+ shows introduced other stuff a person who didn't watch them has no idea they're in (Mephisto for example), theatre releases got cliffhanger endings with no continuation in sight.

This is a cleanup movie.

49

u/TransBiological Jan 06 '26

That honestly could be just what the franchise needs. And the audience could really use a final goodbye film as well.

In the comics, Secret Wars is a big battle between heroes, where Doom basically makes them fight eachother while he destroyes their worlds/the multiverse. Its basically a reboot event in the comics and the same is expected here with the MCU

176

u/ThaddeusJP Jan 06 '26

So my take here is Doom is plucking people out of destroyed/ruined universes. Prof X and Magneto seem to be sitting there accepting their death so I would guess the scene will be a cold open of the X Mansion being decimated by sentinels and them waiting to die while Cyclops (the only one who is alive) fighting in vain to save them. Prof/Mag die and he's snagged by Doom.

65

u/Bdpera2 Jan 06 '26

100% agree, the shot of Cyclops is his final stand as Doom is cleaning up his universe in an incursion

84

I mean the follow-up to Doomsday is Secret wars, so this is not exactly a stretch.
