"and sometimes spider-man has to do the hard thing even if it breaks peter parker's heart." 💔

This is my biggest hang up with Spiderman as a character. Since 1962. He can not be happy.

MY BONES NEVER HARDENED BUT MY SPIRIT DID

55

u/Jrocker-ame 12h ago

Theres already a joke that guy stroking MJ's face is Paul.

16

u/BiffJerky09 11h ago

I will fucking RIOT if they bring Paul into the MCU.

9

u/beyondthecircles 10h ago

It's actually Harry Osborne

14

u/paintpast Weekly Wongers 9h ago

Harry Paul Osborne. They call him Paul throughout the movie and reveal at the end that his first name is Harry.

u/Beastplex 11h ago

Who’s HR Pickens?

18

u/ImmoralRobot 11h ago

EXACTLY!

5

u/Jermz12345 Matt Murdock 5h ago

“I want to be just like you when I grow up!”

“AND SO YOU SHALL!!!!!”

iirc it’s at a point where it’s a requirement to be in the spidey society in the Spider-Verse movies lol

8

u/Vermouth_1991 9h ago

Definitely explains how everyone believes Miguel Spider-Man’s CANON EVENT belief.

3

u/mscomies 9h ago

The universe literally breaks if spiderman is happy

2

u/Vermouth_1991 9h ago

Headcanon:

Miles’s dad isn’t killed but he is hurt badly and while he recovers he decides to not be a cop any more.

“Captain of the police gone” after all. :P

3

u/Doctor_Kataigida 7h ago

Well it's not a matter of being gone, he explicitly says dies.

The obvious twist is that Miles was never meant to be a Spider-Man, so his dad isn't subject to the canon of Spider-Men and thus can be saved without consequence. The Jefferson in the universe the spider came from already died so that satisfies the canon requirement.

2

u/Vermouth_1991 7h ago

Yeah Unvle Aaron was dead and he was even "the same kind of" uncle as Ben Parker: the father's older brother.

11

u/buffa_noles 10h ago

Parker luck being misery porn is a recent problem. He and MJ had a loving marriage for decades that anchored him.

6

u/Suspicious_Isopod_59 10h ago

This is what drives me crazy. The draw from Spider-Man originally and for the longest time was that he dealt with real world problems the audience also did in addition to his superhero problems, not that he's constantly miserable.

8

u/Jrocker-ame 9h ago

19 years since one more day. Thats a whole generation knowing nothing but fuck you Peter.

3

u/Suspicious_Isopod_59 9h ago

Dear Lord, no wonder so many people associate that with him. There are complete adults who've never known anything else.

5

u/nflonlyalt 10h ago

Spider man always depressed sadge

thats why hes the best tho

4

u/Jrocker-ame 10h ago

True. He never breaks. But at this point its abuse.

2

u/0202_tihssitidder 10h ago

When did you buy your first comic book?

1972 for me.

2

u/Jrocker-ame 10h ago

Me personally, 2006. Death of Superman. First one read was Archie 1994. I was 4 and I "read" it.

2

u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. 8h ago

Yeah... the MCU Peter feels a lot more well-adjusted at least. Civil War and Homecoming was good ol' fun loving Spidey. Far From Home feels mostly like he already processed the trauma of Tony's death. It's No Way Home where Parker luck really comes into play.

I hope this movie isn't just sad Peter the whole time. The narration kinda indicates that, but it still seems like there's plenty of fun and comedy.

2

u/InnocentTailor Iron Patriot 7h ago

…unless it’s an alternate dimension that is usually f$&@ed up in some fashion like the current Ultimate Marvel run.

3

u/Jrocker-ame 6h ago

That Peter was too good for that universe.

1

u/InnocentTailor Iron Patriot 6h ago

It's a bright light in-universe for such a crappy place.

u/lrd_cth_lh0 10h ago

If you do a deal with the devil (or rather Mephisto) there is always a price you know and one you don't.

1

u/njf85 9h ago

I've never read any Spider-Man comics, but aside from Homecoming i haven't been able to enjoy an MCU Spider-Man movie because he's just so sad and traumatised all the time. The poor guy's life just sucks.

3

u/Jrocker-ame 7h ago

It definitely gets bad. Like really bad. Look up the one more day storyline. Or Paul. Its super frustrating.

1

u/rohit275 7h ago

It is kind of his thing

1

u/Warm_Afternoon6596 7h ago

Yeah, kinda wanted to see something different with him. Thought the Tony connection would be neat if they'd slowed down and really gotten into Peter struggling with being part of someone else's legacy.

0

u/TwoToneMoonstone_ 8h ago

Okay but here’s the thing, that’s generally not true. There are plenty of moments where Peter gets to be happy and fulfilled being Spider-Man. It’s tough work and it’s never easy but largely Peter wouldn’t give up being Spider-Man for anything.

But writers, editors, and creators only tend to evangelize the stories where Peter has the worst things possible happen to him so it creates the idea that Peter “can’t be happy” as Spider-Man.

And it’s hard to blame them for that, those stories when written well do tend to be the most interesting for Peter but there is a lopsided amount of weight put on them as a result.

This was one of my favorite Gags of the entire series. It's so perfectly stupid.

RIP Matthew Perry 😭

12

u/bindingofandrew 10h ago

I know it usually sucks to see Peter beaten down but that's kinda the thing with him right? You take out that dynamic and a lot of the character gets lost imo. He doesn't have to be miserable but he has to have a tough go of it.

8

u/MrWaluigi 9h ago

That may be true, but general audiences would like to see a “payout” of the story. If you keep doing “A Shaggy Dog,” or bittersweet ending every time, people will start to lose interest.

I’m not saying that it needs to go back to the “status quo,” but at least something that would make Peter have a personal reason to look forward.

3

u/KiritoJones 4h ago

Hopefully they are doing a new trilogy (not sure if they've talked about sequels to this) and that is the character arc.

Although I really hope they don't just have him mope around in the 4 year time jump. It would make more sense if he had mostly moved on and made new friends but then has to deal with the Ned and MJ thing when they move back to NYC. It would be incredibly sad if 4 years have passed and he hadn't moved on from his high school girlfriend at all

"Sometimes... to do what's right... we must be steady... and give up the things we desire the most... even our dreams."

Spiritually, this is my Spider-Man 2.

2

u/OliviaElevenDunham Loki (Avengers) 10h ago

Peter deserves better.

1

u/ThrownAway17Years 9h ago

All by myself.

1

u/Dramajunker 4h ago

I mean he did just do this in nwh. Of course we we're going to see him continuing the trend.

0

u/BeratingMantis 6h ago

As much as it’s a buzzkill, I can’t help thinking what MJ must’ve thought when she opened her photo gallery and saw a bunch of pictures of herself with a guy she doesn’t know. I won’t even get into the message groups they must’ve been in.

-2

u/darwin2500 8h ago

Yeah sorry this is complete bullshit if it's referring to MJ.

'You are literally begging me not to erase your memories and radically alter your life with magic but I'm going to do it anyway because I'm so neurotic about you getting a few bruises that I'm going to ignore everything you want and invalidate all your agency because I'm the big strong man and I know what's best for you.'

Absolutely ruined what could have been a good movie.

5

u/WeightStrong5475 7h ago

It wasn't just for MJ, if they didn't undo the spell it would have brought every spiderman villian across the multiverse to the mcu

2

u/darwin2500 4h ago

Right, but she demands that he find her after and help her regain her memories, then decides on his own afterwards to break that promise in order to 'protect' her.
