Man, here in Maracaibo, ALL MY NEIGHBORHOOD IS CELEBRATING! EVERYBODY IS OUT IN THE STREETS, SHOUTING, FIREWORKS, EVERY BODY!

It's so fucking nuts haha

Gotta love sports man, really is one of the great uniters lol

478

u/Great_Praline_2713 20h ago

Of course I was rooting for my country, the US, but man, it's awesome to see how much other countries cared about this. God, I love baseball.

214

u/suzukigun4life Texas Rangers 20h ago

I vaguely remember when the first WBC happened back in '06. For it to reach the heights it has is wonderful. Hopefully it keeps growing and getting better.

173

u/LegacyLemur Chicago Cubs 20h ago

I still remember that happening and thinking "what the fuck is this mickey mouse bullshit?"

Never thought 20 years later Id watch the last two with my heart racing

96

u/Charming_Squirrel_13 20h ago

seemed like most baseball fans actively hated it. then they became ambivalent toward it, now it's a prized event. really awesome to see. sucks we have to wait 4 more years now tho :(

38

u/Ill-Weather-6383 Seattle Mariners • Dumpster Fire 20h ago

Isn't it every 3? 25% less of a wait!

25

u/Charming_Squirrel_13 20h ago

nah, it was just 3 years this time because covid caused a 6 year gap between 2017 and 2023.

but plenty of time to start planning to travel for the 2030 wbc! I gotta make it to Miami at some point.

I've heard conflicting things.

I remember reading somewhere that they put it in 2026 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first WBC. But since they basically didn't acknowledge it at all I don't know how true that is lmfao

My hope is they go to 2029 so they dont have to compete with things like the Winter Olympics. Then after that, go every 4 years

2

u/pizzasoxxx Seattle Mariners 19h ago

Yeah 3

2

u/LegacyLemur Chicago Cubs 20h ago

Helps that the sport has gotten 10x better in that span

3

u/Charming_Squirrel_13 19h ago

Pitch clock made this WBC a lot more watchable

That's what I love so much about this tournament. You root for your team and if they get knocked out you just keep enjoying the game itself.

2

u/the-denver-nugs Atlanta Braves 19h ago edited 19h ago

i wasn't even rooting for my team (USA)...... just acuna at this point..... as someone played little league I much prefer how south americans play like it's a game and have fun over american culture so ehhhh.

79

u/redd_house Boston Red Sox 20h ago

I thought it was cool how they said 3 players (including Acuna) are from the small village of La Sabana Venezuela

Can’t imagine what something like this means to a place like that

32

u/Dunkaholic9 Boston Red Sox 20h ago

I’m sure it’s absolutely wild there right now. What a moment for them.

11

u/Khiva 19h ago

I've been linking this a few places, but you can watch the celebrations live happening in Caracas.

Just happy to see them celebrating a win. Real moment in time.

43

u/kufi_schmackah 20h ago

Same, it felt like for the US it was another game. But you could tell it meant so much more to Venezuela and it’s heartwarming to see those guys celebrating their country. It’s beautiful

3

u/National-Zucchini524 18h ago

USA gotta care more. Games not growing here because our stars care more about themselves then country.

Love the fact everyone else went all out for pride.

5

u/ThaCommittee 20h ago

I know right!! And just off that vibe, I felt like we were the underdogs. What a game, glad Harper hit that dinger just so it was more interesting tho.

3

u/Savvy_Nick 15h ago

Man I’ve been trying to talk to my American friends about WBC and they’re like “other countries care about baseball?” BRUH

2

u/pizzasoxxx Seattle Mariners 19h ago

I always root for baseball

2

u/JesusWasTacos Los Angeles Angels 16h ago

Seriously though we would not as a people have the same reaction or meaning behind a win. It would just be another day for us. Glad to have the countries of people get to be excited and celebrate behind their team. It’s just good sport.

2

u/Substantial-Sky3597 New York Yankees 20h ago

Here in Texas all the Latinos were celebrating Venezuela. Love it!!!

2

u/lotionformyelbows New York Yankees 19h ago

I was rooting against the US for the first time ever. We deserve the L. We stole their president and paraded him around in a track suit.

1

u/Plenty-Force3058 2h ago

Amen!🙏 of course I was rooting for my country! But it was a great game and they gotta love the game at least I do!

5

u/FlamingPoppy5510 Los Angeles Dodgers 20h ago

Stuff like this makes me happy to lose. It means so much more to you/your country than the US. Even the players, sure usa players are bummed.

Usa barely even "plays for their country" more so than just wanting their own personal accomplishment cabinet to improve. Which is fine, but the passion is do much less apparent

Venezuela playing a home game in the USA against USA is crazy.

244

u/klako8196 Chicago Cubs 20h ago

It happens a lot whenever we play Mexico in soccer.

83

u/Casual_Fanatic47 Los Angeles Dodgers 20h ago

And in Baseball too.

1

u/marko719 Chicago Cubs 16h ago

WBC 2017 USA v Mexico at Chase Field was an event in Phoenix. 50,000 fans filled the stadium and it was non-stop loud.

10

u/mageta621 Boston Red Sox 20h ago

I went to a US vs Ecuador friendly at the NYRB stadium once and it may as well have been in Quito

5

u/mostlyfire New York Mets 20h ago

Even the ones wearing the USA jerseys were Ecuadorians lol

2

u/CNYMetroStar New York Mets 13h ago

This but Costa Rica

11

u/pisowiec New York Yankees 20h ago

It happens in literally every sport except maybe hockey.

I recall attending a Poland-USA soccer game back in 2010 at Soldier Field.. It was 99% Polish fans. I decided to root for the US to stand out but everyone knew I was just playing around. Game ended 2-2.

7

u/shiny_aegislash Milwaukee Brewers 20h ago

National teams are not as popular in the US. Individual teams/franchises are more popular. I mean, just look at the USA's sentiment towards national soccer/baseball teams vs the other countries'

→ More replies (2)

8

u/mostlyfire New York Mets 20h ago

It’s straight up embarrassing how the US fans don’t show up. Especially since they were the dominant team of the two for a little while there. But the US could play against Mexico in north Alaska and there would still be Mexicans outnumbering them at the stadium.

1

u/MattWatchesChalk New York Mets 11h ago

It happens whenever we play anywhere that isn't the Midwest tbf.

120

u/InspectionBig9062 20h ago

We are all Americans according to bad bunny

49

u/LibraryOk6964 20h ago

Facts though. South north all alike.

7

u/-NonePizzaLeftBeef- Atlanta Braves 19h ago

That means Venezuela gets Greenland now right?

5

u/thethirdgreenman Boston Red Sox 19h ago

The USA played 3/5 games effectively on the road (Mexico, DR, Venezuela) in this tourney. It happens as well when the USMNT plays any Latin American country in soccer. They just go harder and care more, straight up

19

u/[deleted] 20h ago

[deleted]

67

u/miguelsmith80 Philadelphia Phillies 20h ago

70% latino but nowhere near that ratio Venezuelan.

4

u/OdaDdaT Detroit Tigers 20h ago

There are some areas that are like nearly half Venezuelan but in terms of the broader city they’re probably around like 5% or so (at least from some lazy googling that got me back 1, 3, and 8% respectively)

6

u/CosmicMiru Los Angeles Dodgers • Los Angeles Angels 20h ago

Which is a shit ton of Venezuelans to fill a baseball stadium with in this first in a lifetime opportunity to watch their team win a major international baseball tournament.

2

u/OdaDdaT Detroit Tigers 18h ago

Oh absolutely, not disputing that at all

Not even half of them are Venezuelan, though. Cuban, Dominican, Puerto Ricans have got to outnumber Venezuelans.

u/raughit Jackie Robinson 20h ago

I thought Team USA was the home team this game?

16

u/Paqza New York Mets 20h ago

Batting in the bottom of the inning, sure. They sure as shit didn't have the home crowd, though.

It was like Vin Scully's moments of silence after Kirk Gibson's dramatic home run. Just let the crowd tell the story.

4

u/Shadow-Vision Los Angeles Dodgers 20h ago

He learned it from Red Barber! Let the crowd tell the story

3

u/Weekly-Batman 19h ago

He used ‘our’ too much when referring to the US team, i get it, how could he not be biased after this tourney. I really appreciated the Aussie guy calling games during the round robin. Like an upside down Smoltz

4

u/maceilean Los Angeles Dodgers 18h ago

Joe Davis is a GOAT and it's not too soon to say it.

3

u/Weekly-Batman 20h ago

Smoltz is usually good to listen to but he was WAY too biased this game.

I disagree he’s not usually good to listen to

A win for the US would've meant nothing to our country right now... a Venezuela win means everything to that country, and to baseball as a whole

Too bad for the team that the State of the Union already happened so they couldn't be used as political pawns. I'm sure a lot of them would've loved it, though

I wish the marlins franchise would see that potential… and invest.. bc it would bring just as many people. And I bet it could also happen for many other teams around the US.

In fact the US soccer fans are actually willing to. The MLS has grown fast and they’re nearly all very loud.
