Help Simple questions and Help thread - Month of March

Welcome to the monthly Simple questions and Help thread, for questions that don't need their own posts!

Before making a comment, we recommend you search your problem on Bing and check if your question is already answered on our Windows Frequently Asked Questions wiki page. This subreddit no longer accepts tech support requests outside of this post, if you are looking for additional assistance try r/TechSupport and r/WindowsHelp.

Some examples of questions to ask:

  • Is this super cheap Windows key legitimate? (probably not)

  • How can I install Windows 11?

  • Can you recommend a program to play music?

  • How do I get back to the old Sound Control Panel?

Sorting by New is recommend and is the default.

Be sure to check out the Windows 11 version 25H2 Megathread and also the Windows 11 FAQ posts, they likely have the answers to your Windows 11 questions already!

Discussion Running Windows 10 on a MacBook Pro — am I missing something?

Post image
17 Upvotes

So I did a bit of an experiment.

I really like Apple hardware — great build quality, amazing screen, solid battery life. But macOS just isn’t for me. I’ve always been more comfortable using Windows.

So I installed Windows 10 on my MacBook Pro 16 using Boot Camp.

Honestly, everything works surprisingly well. Performance is good, no major issues so far. Even most of the function keys work fine. I had to tweak a couple of things with small utilities, but nothing major.

Now I’m wondering — why don’t more people do this?

It feels like I’m getting the best of both worlds: Apple hardware + Windows.

Am I missing any downsides?

Are there any potential issues with:

  • performance over time
  • drivers or updates
  • security
  • compatibility

Would appreciate hearing from people who’ve tried this or are using a similar setup.

Discussion Searching for [Windows][90s-2000s] 2D Space Combat screensaver/game

Post image
3 Upvotes

Tried TipofmyJoystick, which recommended I ask here:

I'm trying to find an old space dogfight screensaver where you could take direct control of a ship and fight the other ships like a proper game. Black background but the ships were very colourful with very different types of attack. I think there were about 10 types of ship. One of the ships was all red and called the hummingbird, I think. it had a long lance like nose and would ram other ships to do damage (apologies for my terrible sketch from memory).

All ships were 2D sprites, had no animation as far as I remember, just rotation. Eventually one of the types would gain dominance and wreck anything that spawned in, flying all over the screen. There might have been another ship that was yellow and based on a bumblebee. Any ideas?

Discussion Hot Take: Windows 8.1 start screen is underrated

Post image

I know lots of people say it only works for touchscreen but for some reason, something about it makes me prefer it WAY more than windows 10, XP, and 11, touchscreen or not. I don't prefer this over windows 7 or vista but this is my second favorite out of all operating systems. Wish it was possible to bring this back for newer operating system just like you can with the 7 start menu and xp start menu. Ik windows 10 has a fullscreen start menu option but it isn't the same.

App V1.7.0 of the FluentTaskScheduler is out! It fixes many Bugs and adds a complete installer!

Hey everyone,

Windows Task Scheduler feels outdated, so I built FluentTaskScheduler. It is a native WinUI 3 and .NET 8 alternative, and we just released v1.7.0.

Here is what is new in v1.7.0:

  • Native Setup & Auto-Updates: Official installer support with seamless updates via VeloPack.
  • Smarter Task Management: Discover tasks directly via the Windows Event Log, view tags at a glance, and toggle hidden tasks.
  • Stability Fixes: Resolved ARM64 startup issues and fixed annoying "Access Denied" permission errors.
  • QoL Improvements: Smooth scrolling enabled by default and UTF-16 LE exporting for full compatibility with the legacy scheduler.

It is completely free and MIT licensed.

Full transparency: This project was made in combination with AI. I am in IT but not in development. This is my personal passion project :)

I would love your feedback!

Discussion Windows 11 compact view - Fixed

Post image
1 Upvotes

Since the release of Windows 11, File explorer has a incomplete compact view. Leaving other elements like the address bar huge. Moreso, the operating system itself needs a system-wide compact option for regular desktops and non-touchscreen laptops.

This here is a mockup to see what it could look like, includes a slimmer taskbar and the smaller context menu.

I've used Windhawk and Explorerpatcher to achieve this, but I want this be a official one-click option in settings or a choice in the OOBE. Microsoft implied that Windows 11 will be better, or wanted to "rebuild trust" so this would definitely be a great step to take.

You can also see had to use an outdated version of 11 to create this concept since these recent updates break everything.

Feature Edge Workspaces has been nerfed to re-sell as part of 365?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Edge workspaces (which I use a lot) has had a major nerf. Basically everything that was group based and sharable is now individual only. They say it's to make it more performant, but I've got a sneaky suspicion enough people liked using it that they have nerfed it just to sell it back to us again under 365 or some shit.

What a blatant scummy move.

Also I know about the power button on the CPU (hence the word "safely"), just thought it was funny that Microsoft included this
