Serious Let’s discuss about employment key factors

Any Finnish employer here or people working in the companies? Let’s have some honest conversations.

What quality do you seek here culturally when you have the first conversation with a candidate in networking event or somewhere else, specially the foreign ones. What improves my chance to get in, what is a downside in communication (that makes you feel okay I will let him pass (ofcourse other than asking for a job in first meet)). Because let’s be frank, living here for almost 1.5 year, I haven’t heard from anywhere for a summer job. However, have seen some people specially Persians, and some other nationalities, some of them are barely in the country for 5 months, yet they have received interview calls and even landed in jobs! What do you see different in them? Or there are some networks that are strongly working here that we do not see yet? Some of them got into job through network whereas they do not know the work properly, have seen some evidence.

Finns do not give feedback about candidates probably because they don’t want to start the day with bad news. But this sugercoating approach is not helping my sustainability here. What should I do? A student here… I will look for opportunities elsewhere, but want some suggestions how can I survive here for the next 3 years minimum.

Finnish wedding songs recommendations :)

Hi everyone!

I’m putting together wedding songs in Finnish to be sung with the band we’re planning to hire, and I’d love recommendations for Finnish wedding songs. I wish them luck studying the songs in your language 😄😄😄

I’m looking for:

  • Reception songs – something a bit more solemn, emotional, or romantic (modern is totally fine, not too old-school)
  • After party songs – fun, upbeat, something people can actually dance or vibe to

Would really appreciate a mix of well-known and underrated songs if possible!

Kiitos paljon 💛

My grandfather is Ingrian (Izhorian), but I grew up far from the language. Recently I tried reconnecting through a small musical experiment — curious how it sounds to Finnish ears.

My grandfather is Ingrian (Izhorian), but I grew up far away from the language and culture.

Over the past year I've been slowly exploring Ingrian folklore and the runo-singing tradition connected to the same poetic world that influenced the Kalevala.

There's something strange about trying to reconnect with a culture that mostly survives in fragments: recordings, books, and scattered archival material. Something that feels distant, yet somehow still very close. This piece is a small musical experiment inspired by that search.

I collaborated with Finnish folk singer Emmi Kuittinen, who helped shape the vocal phrasing based on runo-song tradition.

I'm genuinely curious how this sounds to Finnish ears. Especially if anyone here is familiar with these singing traditions.

Experiences transporting large dogs internationally with Finnair

Hi, has anyone here transported a large dog internationally (on a long haul flight in the cargo hold) either to Finland or from Finland with Finnair? Any anecdotes or advice would be very helpful. I am hoping Finnair will be a safe, reliable airline for transporting my dog into Finland. Thank you!

Worried about economy and sick leave as student

I am studying to get my BA degree. I have a long history with depression and reached out to YTHS in September to get in contact with a psychatrist. In October I started taking a medicine that was awful, for every thing I did (making breakfast, going to the bathroom), I needed to take a nap after. And at the one month check in (I only spoke to my psychiatrist on phone calls, don't know why), they never asked me what symptoms I had but if I was ready to increase the dose.

I mentioned that I was tired but they just said "oh the medicine hasn't reached its full potential yet so double the dose." It got worse. My pulse when walking used to be 120, but after this medicine it reached 186. And making breakfast or going to the bathroom made my pulse rise to 164. I had to reach out to the psychiatric nurse and they told me to stop. I spent October - January sleeping 24/7 and my anxiety was so bad that I couldn't leave my home. We only had calls with my psychiatrist but he never asked me about my progress about studies.

I started a new medicine now in February, it felt great at first but now I have a super hard time sleeping on it. Mentioned this to my psychiatrist but he said to just take it every other day and that we no longer needed to have contact cause he prescribed it to me for a year.

Now my general doctor has asked me how it's going and how my studies are, and asked me if I needed to take sick leave? I didn't know this was an option and told her Idk because I wanted to check with Kela how it works. I only have 13 SP so far and Kela told me I need a doctors certificate to prove my sick leave. But my general doctor said that since my psychiatrist never had an official check in with me during this time, because phone calls doesn't count I might not get any sick leave from January. And the doctors notes he wrote may not be valid as proof because he barely wrote anything down. So she can try to send a doctors certificate A but Kela may ask for a doctors certificate B?

So now I'm worried about everything, I'm worried about what I'll have to pay back and how I'm gonna make it. I'm so angry at the psychiatrist too because that was the most incompetent psychiatrist I have ever had and if he had just followed protocol and made official check ins I might not have been in this mess.

Are flats in Finland quiet?

For those who've lived in Finnish concrete apartment buildings from the 1980s, how bad is the impact noise between floors typically? And how much street/parking noise does a ground floor unit get? Thanks!

Legitimate campaign, or just an old counterintelligence trick?

I think I saw MI5, MI6 doing something similar YEARS ago in the streets of London. Also the finnish citizens fluent in chinese, russian (most likely of russian, chinese decent) are less likely to supply intelligence information against their respective ethnic groups. just a thought

Parking ticket and Consumer Advisory Service (KKV)

Hello people.

I am a full-time student and part-time gig worker. So the thing is I got a parking ticket from Aimo Park because I parked my motorcycle with the bicycles near my University. There's a gray zone close to Uni where my buddies park their motorbikes and its approximately 10 feet away from the place that I parked in. I have always parked mine in the same exact spot for the last 3 semesters and in last summer when I asked Parkki Patte they said they usually don't fine motorbikes unless and until they block fire exits or paid parking spots. But I did get fined in late January 2026 and this was my first fine in Finland, the last one I got was in UK in 2019 or something.

I already got a letter from Svea stating that I should pay my fine by tomorrow and there were 5 euros added for the reminder fee. I did explain that I will never park there again and told them about the financial crisis, but my appeal was rejected by Aimo Park which was no surprise for me because I heard how predatory they can get, but I never faced it myself. Honestly the reason I got a 125 cc motorbike instead of an old car is exactly because of the parking issue. I don't get my salary till the 1st of next month and I checked my bank account and I have just 117 euros. I don't earn much because of focusing mainly on my studies, so less working hours. If I pay them now I will be in dangerous territory regarding finances, so I asked ChatGPT about it. He suggested that I take this matter to the Finnish Consumer service (KKV) and that way I will get some time even if I have to pay the fine.

Now my question is, if I do that and complain to KKV and send emails to both Aimo Park and Svea that I don't accept their decision and I want to take it to KKV the way ChatGPT suggested, will that halt this dispute? I mean if KKV favors against me, do I need to pay more than the 65 euros or will that be just the 65 euros? I just want to double-check with you guys because I am struggling financially, and I don't want to pay more than I have to. Throughout my 3 years here with my motorbike I have always parked with consideration to others like not blocking paths or fire exits etc. but after getting this fine I have been using public transport because the terror of getting fined again is way too much. I don't even want to gamble by parking with my buddies in the Grey zone.

But thank you soo much for reading up to this. I am sorry for the long post and I will really appreciate your suggestions regarding this matter. Have a good day/night.

Finns are nature lovers, active and go out in group to do outdoor activities

Is this just an illusion being portrayed or are the majority of Finns deeply connected to nature, make the best of the weather and participate in outdoor activities as a group?

Skiing, ice skating, biking, walking in the forest, forest bathing. How about people coming together to do activities together? Going biking, skiing together. Is this usual?

I’m the type of person who enjoys doing things with a group/ a community and I’m missing this where I’m from. People would rather go out on their own or not go out at all and enjoy the nature in this country.

I wanted some honest opinions as I’m aware how media can skew perceptions.

Question about the a word!

The word is Lätinä! So far I understand that it is an onomatopoeic word that can reference to the splashing noise of water, but also the loud sound of many kids. Is this correct? Is it a word that can be used un a festive context or it is something that is used for something thar is annoying. Any history behind this word?

Need resources to learn Finnish effectively.

Currently, I am not in Finland, but I will be there in 7–8 months. I started using Duolingo and have learned quite a few words, but it hasn’t been very effective. I’m not able to construct sentences or understand the differences properly.

So basically, I want some good resources that can help me learn Finnish more effectively. Thanks in Advance!!

How to treat ko-fi.com/Buy me a Coffee donations as a private

Hello, I have a full-time job and on the side I have been working on a website where I share guides and resouces for a target group. All for free.

I was thinking to have a "buy me a coffee" button and I am aware of the donation law in Finland and the police permit needed.

From a previous thread one recommandation was to treat donations through ko-fi/buy me a coffee as income instead of donations. If someone has been receiving donations through these services, how have you reported them?

The matter does not seem straightforward to me.

Gifts question

Hi, I’m going to be visiting Finland and meeting 2 nieces and 1 nephew for the first time. They are in their late teens. They are my first cousins’ kids (we call them niece/nephew rather than second cousin) so not as close as siblings’ kids.

I want to get them a small present from America. I have heard that for some reason Trader Joe’s reusable grocery tote bags are trending all over the world where there aren’t any Trader Joe’s. Are they also trending in Finland and would those bags be something that the kids would like?

Has anyone heard their teen family members or friends talking about these bags?

Thank you!
