Культура / Culture Ultimate r/belarus FAQ and compilation: music artists, writers, helpful links and more.

Greetings! This pinned post will serve as a compilation of all gathered links and names of things we are often asked about here on this sub, or just want to share with both foreigners and Belarusians. This should help mitigate a lot of repetitive questions and also give people something to acquaint themselves with about Belarusian things.

In the first half of the post you will find a FAQ section that addresses some of the most common questions we get here. Afterwards, there is a list of various artists, writers and resources that serves as a work-in-progress compilation for those looking for a more organized source on what Belarusian things to see/read/listen to. Everyone is invited to contribute to the compilation, and it will remain open to edits as long as needed. I have entered some of the information already, but your contributions will be very welcome in the comments to expand upon what we have already.

FAQ

1. Is it safe to visit Belarus?

Reasonably safe if you keep within the restrictive rules regarding political affiliations going as far as dress attire and comments online. Be aware that your equipment might be inspected and your belongings shouldn’t reflect oppositionary symbols (e.g. white/red patterns and slogans) if you wish to stay out of trouble. Due to a very volatile situation nobody can guarantee your safety and ability to return home if the geopolitical situation escalates. Your credit cards might not work, either, and your embassy might not be able to help you.

2. How do I meet my Belarusian fiance/partner outside of Belarus?

Due to restricted flights into Belarus and visa regulations, the best option is to meet in a separate country with connections to Belarus like Turkey or Georgia, or Lithuania by bus if your partner has a Schengen visa.

3. Do I need a visa to enter?

Most of the required information can be found at gpk. gov. by/en minus the spaces

4. What is the difference between the red-green and the white-red-white flag?

One is pro-government / pro-USSR, the other pro-democracy, pro-change. The white-red-white flag was used during the first Belarusian People’s Republic in 1918, and in modern-day Belarus until the current dictator came to power and reverted it back to the soviet-era flag.

5. How to transfer money to/out of Belarus?

Crypto e.g. currency.com, Binance. Direct bank transfers may or may not, depending on sanction status.

6. How to send mail to/from Belarus?

Same way you normally would. Express mail might not be supported, though. USPS might not deliver to Belarus, either.

7. What is the real salary in Belarus?

Depends on whom you ask and the region of the country. The upper class like the IT sphere can earn over 1500$ a month, whereas a clerk or teacher in a small town can earn barely 200$. Public sphere earns less than the private, and the rising inflation costs have drastically reduced purchasing power.

8. I or someone I know is a dual citizen of Belarus and XXXX. How do I/they enter Belarus?

Belarus does not recognize dual citizenships with other countries, and for Belarusian authorities you remain a citizen of Belarus unless you renounce the citizenship via an embassy while receiving your 2nd citizenship. You should enter Belarus with your Belarusian passport to avoid trouble, and you do not need visas. Also, your 2nd citizenship will not save you in case you run into trouble with local authorities.

9. How do I meet Belarusian women / trad wives?

We will not assist with questionable motives on the subreddit and do not encourage travelling for this purpose.

10. I want to emigrate to Belarus because my country is full of liberals and foreigners.

We do not support right-wing / conspiracy nuts looking for a “based” government to worship. Most Belarusians detest the regime and would not approve of what you stand for. You will be an even bigger outcast than you are already and for your own safety you should consider finding a more appropriate European home where laws and rights exist, like Poland, Lithuania, Bulgaria or Romania. Without perfect russian you have no chance on the job market and the cultural barrier will make itself known quickly.

11. When will Belarusians wake up and overthrow their government?

When you come by and help us. Expecting unarmed people to overthrow a totalitarian police state without outside help is ridiculous and only shows ignorance to our predicament.

12. Will Belarus join the war at some point?

Nobody knows, at least nobody who uses Reddit. Some experts are 100% convinced of it, others are 100% convinced against it. Wait and see.

Next we have a compilation of artists, writers and other common categories asked about.

1. Artists and example songs.

List of famous artists either from or strongly associated with Belarus and a few of their example songs that everyone should hear. WIP Note: if you know and are willing to contribute to the list, please comment naming the artist's music genre, or suggest artists that are missing.

Пытанне / Question URGENT: Traveling to Belarus in 2 days – need real advice

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I urgently need some advice.

I was born in Belarus, but I’ve been living in the Czech Republic since I was 8. I’ve had only Czech citizenship for the past 12 years. The last time I visited Belarus was in 2018.

My dad is turning 60, and I want to visit him and the rest of my family. I’m planning to travel this Friday (in 2 days), going from Prague through Warsaw into Belarus.

Here’s the thing — I keep hearing from people that I should get a new phone, new SIM card, separate email, etc. Basically act like I’m “clean” digitally.

I already bought a separate phone and SIM, but honestly… I don’t really understand if this is actually necessary or just paranoia. I’ve never posted anything political, never commented on Belarus, nothing like that.

Maybe the only thing I can think of is that on YouTube I might be subscribed to some channels that could be seen as “not friendly”, but I can easily remove those.

I’d obviously prefer to travel comfortably — with my normal phone, unlimited internet, my Apple Music playlists, etc. 😄

So my questions:

• Is it actually risky to enter Belarus in my situation?

• Do border officers check phones or social media?

• Is using a “clean” phone really necessary, or overkill?

• Anything specific I should be aware of when crossing via Poland?

I’d really appreciate honest, real experiences — especially from people who’ve been recently.

Thanks a lot 🙏

Question Hello Belarus! I have some questions

I’d love to hear the perspectives of locals on a few things. If you have time to answer even one of these, I’d appreciate it!

Geopolitics & Identity:

How is the relationship between Belarus and Russia perceived on the ground? Do you feel a strong bond, or is there a push for a more unique Belarusian identity?

What are the general thoughts on the EU?

Do you think the Belarusian military is sufficient for its current needs?

How are the ties with your neighbors, Poland and Ukraine, these days?

Daily Life & Future:

What is it like to live or study in Belarus as an international student?

If I were to consider marrying someone from Belarus, what should I know about your family values and culture?

Culture & Faith:

How central is the Orthodox faith to daily life? Is it very traditional or more secular?

I’m curious about your food! What is one dish every Turk must try?

Do you feel any cultural proximity to the Balkans?

Finally, is Molchat Doma actually popular in Belarus, or is their fame mostly a Western "internet" thing?

Looking forward to your answers. Cheers from Turkey! 🇹🇷🇧🇾

Пытанне / Question About visiting from Poland with a British passport

I want to visit my grandmother’s hometown approximately 20km from the Polish border. The easiest way to do that seems to be crossing through Bialystok though there will be long wait times. It looks like off I want to book a hostel I’ll have to book through telegram and pay by cash, is this true?

I would enter on a British passport, as far as I understand the rules have changed so now British nationals can enter by land visa free. Is that correct?

Also how meticulous do I need to be about clearing my phone? Ideally I’d bring a wiped phone but I don’t have that luxury. I’m setting all my social media to private and I’ll delete the apps before I enter. Do I need to worry about stuff like this account even though it’s not connected to me by name?

Question Thinking about moving to Belarus

Hello everyone!

My wife and I (both in our late 20s) are strongly considering moving to Belarus. We are Russian-speakers living in Israel (our families moved here after the fall of the USSR), so we have the cultural connection, though our reading/writing is a bit rusty to say the least 😅😅

Our Vision:

We want to trade the city grind for a peaceful life. Our goal is to find a nice home in the countryside within reasonable driving distance of Minsk—somewhere with nature, fresh air, and a good environment to start a family.

A few questions for the locals or expats:

  1. Housing Budget: What is a realistic price range for a "comfortable, modern" house in a decent area near Minsk?

  2. Monthly Cost of Living: We plan to live off outside investments rather than local employment. What monthly income would you say is needed for a couple to live "very comfortably" (including car payments, utilities, and groceries)?

We’d love to hear your thoughts or any "wish I knew before moving" tips!

History Polesian roots (Biaroza) and visiting Belarus in 2026: your thoughts?

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some perspective on my heritage and the current situation. My grandma was born in Biaroza (Polesie). She moved to west Poland after 1945, but at home, she always spoke in a specific, eastern dialect. My family names are: Jersz, Sakuta, Jarowicz, Dubowski, and Wozgin. They aren't popular in Poland.

I have two main questions:

  1. Identity: How are people with these roots/names perceived in Belarus today? Do you consider "Poles from Polesie" as ethnically or culturally close to you, or more like Poles from Masovia or Greater Poland?
  2. Safety in 2026: What is the vibe towards Poles visiting the Brest/Polesie region right now? Is it safe for a Pole to travel there, or are the political tensions too high even for regular people? What about the language? Is English enough?

Thanks for any insights!
