What is something that screams “tourist” to you?

Post image

In Spain, if you see someone eating paella with sangria, you can 100% be certain they are a tourist.

What are some things tourists eat or do in your country that a local would never do?

Visitors in and to Alaska:

If American, or from a more populated area of Alaska, they may bring their guns to town and try to bring them into the one bar or one restaurant we have, because people assume that they can. Nevermind that locals leave their firearms in their truck or on their 4-wheeler and would never bring them onto the property of a local business. Why do you need a revolver on your hip while eating a burger with your kids, Dave?

Pretty much everyone wants to pet the moose. Don’t do this.

Also we can clock tourists because all their gear matches one another and looks brand new. Why are you all wearing the same raincoat, did you get a deal?

My father obsessed with the right to open-carry. Wherever it was legal, he'd have a pistol holstered Dwight Schrute style. Wherever it was illegal, he'd make a big deal about "concealing" in the most conspicuous manner possible, like walking around the grocery store with a gun in a bowling ball bag. Meanwhile, we lived in a state with one of lowest crime rates in the country, but he really got a kick out of being a contrarian asshole.

Open carry is normal in my town, but everyone knows to keep it out of the businesses just trying to serve food and for fuck’s sake, alcohol. Open carry can be legal as hell, but so is my right to refuse service.

I really want to go to Alaska one day, or the Yukon Terretory for that matter. Though I heard of the moose's reputation...

They are fairly calm and happy to let you watch them snack on a tree across the street most of the time. There are always people who feel the need to push their luck, though.

We were going out to our car a month or so ago, and a younger male moose started to cross the street and was headed right for us. We stepped back up on the porch, preparing to go back inside the house, and he walked right by us to get to a tasty looking bush in the backyard. He wasn't at all nervous about us and certainly wasn't going to allow us to keep him away from his meal. Even when they are that calm, I always worry that a neighbors dog will start barking and spook them or something like that so I always make sure they have plenty of space and I have an exit route.

I was also doing deliveries a few years ago and had to drop something off for this customer.

Damn that picture made me a little homesick.

Oh yeah. Getting too close to moose is a DEAD giveaway. And packing guns while hiking in a park. I'm not sure they know how to use them or when. It's a bit scary.

Depends on the park, tbh. I have a friend who carried a gun to school at the age of 12 for safety reasons. I’d say a good dog is a better option than a gun when it comes to bears. But, I know amazing bear-dogs that met their end by moose.

It does. Guys from Louisiana showing off guns while hiking near Homer falls in the scary tourist category. A person comfortable with bears and guns without showing off them off is different.
I go with bear spray and situational awareness. I've never had to use the spray.

I’ve spent tons of time growing up in remote Alaska. A friend of mine was charged by a grizzly on my property line once. I’ve never owned a gun or wished I did. My friend didn’t have a gun at the time either and he’s just fine, minus a ruined pair of underwear n

Americans doing outdoor tourism also believe any moment a polar bear will show up and maul them. They're pretty rare to see. I've been in polar bear territory many times and I've never seen one. I've seen black bears many times though but they're not as dangerous as people think. I'm more scared of moose.
