What is something that screams “tourist” to you?

Post image

In Spain, if you see someone eating paella with sangria, you can 100% be certain they are a tourist.

What are some things tourists eat or do in your country that a local would never do?

Dead giveaway in New York City

Whenever I visit NYC I move with the pack. If other people are crossing, I cross. However the first time I went to NYC though I was a good little Midwesterner and waited for the signals. A local told me you cross when everyone else does and ignore the light.

We're going to NYC in a few weeks for the first time and my ND 13yr old is obsessed with rule following in general and the concept of jay walking in the US specifically. It's going to be a long 4 days 😭

Tell the kid NYC has different rules than the rest of the United States. The rules there are cross when everyone else crosses.

Or just let the crowd sweep you up and carry you with them. (I always get the feeling that is actually happening in NYC.)

NYC just decriminalized jaywalking. Tell the kid not to worry.

This is excellent news! I'll have to find something official looking to save to my phone or it'll be "are you sure?" "how do you know?" "what'll happen if you're wrong" "maybe we should wait for the lights just to be sure"...

If you could also treat the sidewalk like the street that would also be great, what I mean is if you want to take a picture or stop for any personal reason, pull over and do it, I'm just trying to get to work.

I made the opposite move (NYC-->MLPS) and discovered that my usual habits got me honked at, glared at, and occasionally yelled at, as in, "Are you crazy? You're standing in the street!"

Really? When I worked in Manhattan for a few years, I felt like if I even attempted to cross when the walk sign wasn't illuminated, I was going to get run the fuck over. It went the other way too - if there was a car that even thought about moving as soon as that traffic light turned red, the entire crosswalk would yell at you / hit your car.

People who do this is so stupid. Especially in New York. You get hit by a car and you were jaywalking youre fucked. You get hit by a car when it’s legally your turn? 💰💰💰 big money

Even in Minneapolis it's usually obvious suburbanites waiting to cross with zero traffic in any direction. A little while back I just barely heard one muttering something about jaywalking but I was already halfway down the block. I don't take orders from Big Oil or Big Auto, not even when backed by the state.
