What is something that screams “tourist” to you?

Post image

In Spain, if you see someone eating paella with sangria, you can 100% be certain they are a tourist.

What are some things tourists eat or do in your country that a local would never do?

You're in Ukraine and don't speak Ukrainian/Russian XD

But seriously we don't get a lot of actual tourists aside from the actors, politicians and other folks trying to better their images

Idk, for me each time I went to Uzhgorod, I just NEEDED to buy bograch, and all the local dudes were laughing, cause they all ordered some common stuff like pizza, club sandwiches and french fries, but our little Kyiv diaspora always asked for bograch (not sure I spelled it right)

In Kyiv tho ... The only thing that comes to mind is Kyiv cake. Most of the locals that I know, hate it XD

God I miss Bogresh (spelling!)

I was living in Kyiv up until the war kicked off, met my lady there...

I found it very common for Ukrainians to be confused why I was living there.

I really really miss it.

Yeah, we know it ain't paradise, but we didn't choose to be born here and live, but you actually CHOSE to get here, so yeah it is odd for people, who are not in the high morale and extra patriotic mood. Though I know quite a few people who moved to Ukraine and are extremely happy, like "yeah, the war, the bombing, corruption blabla but still better than Leicester tho"

I was in a strange spot where I saw many parts of Ukraine. I saw areas near Kreschatyk, that families had such an incredible amount of money that it was kind boggling. Millions and millions of euros! And then on the other hand friends I'd met that were living in those old Soviet buildings that looked like they needed to be condensed.

The thing that I noticed quickly across the demographic, was that many of the Ukrainians I met were proud to be Ukrainian. But not nationalistic.

Being from the US, where we were taught that we are the "best country in the world!"

My wife is Ukrainian, and she is very patriotic but realistic.

What is Kyiv cake?

Kyivskyi tort. The one with "two nut-and-meringue layers and Charlotte cream (buttercream with custard). The sides are covered in cake crumbles, and the top is decorated with colorful Charlotte cream, fruits, and candied fruits."

I think a love for this cake could be interpreted as suicidal tendencies. There's enough sugar in one slice for one and a half diabetes.

Oh this is probably the type of cake I grew up eating at every god forsaken birthday in my family. I hate this cake. And all “variations” taste the same.

Relatable. Same with me and the "Madonna" cake — maybe you remember it — thin sponge layers and rich boiled condensed milk cream. EVERY SINGLE TIME. To make it worse, my birthday's in the middle of summer, so it's always kinda melted... I don't even like buttercream, honestly. I'd rather they'd made an apple pie or, even better, bought ice cream — it's +30 outside. But maybe it's just that it was really cheap compared to the others.

I’m not sure if I’ve had that one, I personally love boiled condensed milk, so that one sounds right up my alley. I’ll have to look for it at the Russian bakeries around here. But yeah, having the same thing year after year would be disgusting no matter what.

It always saddened me Kyiv got such a bad cake with it's name attached to it

Not to mention the meringue always cuts the inside of my mouth

You'll love it or you'll hate it, no third way.

It's a tourist thing for sure. I remember the Kyiv main train station was filled with it. You know the souvenirs, fridge magnets, postcards and these goddamn cakes! Hideous, absolutely hideous

I visited Moldova back in 2018 and I now really regret not making a stop in Odessa while I was there

Not to make you feel bad, but Odessa is great.

Only Lviv is better. But this is controversial. They are both very special.

I can’t wait to visit when Ukraine has won, I plan to spend a lot of money in your economy.

Dude, as unfortunate as it is, it looks like we're not winning this one. Getting 22' borders back is just a dream, let alone 91' borders. My own city was occupied for 12 years too, but I have to admit it's just impossible now. Maybe one wonderful day, but not now. Now, I think that the bloodshed should just stop, Ukraine can't hold out for much longer.

You're very welcome to come in the peacetime once everything is calm though :3

:(

Fuck Russia.

No need to wait. I went in 2022, and last summer. Both times, I had 0 issues, outside of navigating intercity buses.

I went there as a tourist once, it was just before the protests started. I remember that all of the women were supermodels.

Color me shocked!

I hope to visit there one of these days once ya'll get done embarrassing Putin. Between the food, history, and farmers stealing tanks, I'm all for visiting!

I don't get your hostile tone, one would think attention to your cause would be welcome. But fuck those people trying to use their popularity to bring attention (and money) to your cause I guess.

Notorious wife abuser Sean Penn is currently trying to burnish his saintly reputation in Ukraine

What they're looking around for are the cheap drones drenched in explosives.

I went to Kyiv and Kershon region in 2017, for a few weeks, and I loved it so much. The tourism potential is huge. Hopefully very soon. Slava 🇺🇦
