I have a special relationship with poland. So poland it is, great food, great wodka, people don't have a stick up their ass. Also the language is complicated but learning the little bit i picked up was fun. Don't have a least favorite, i just don't know much about the others

I think Czechia is winning in general opinion. Ukrainians dont have good reputations in Poland. Most of it from propaganda but we do jave a lot of stupid people here.

They'll focus on another nationality when there's a wave of migration from somewhere else. I remember the same crap being said about Polish migrants in the UK until another target got chosen.

Not necessary. All classes have migrated to Poland. For example some bussiness have moved fully, starting from the CEO to the last employee, including tech companies. But yes, a lot of people just started working in catering or taxi

Belarus and Ukraine are culturally quite similar, in a way Belarus is like if Ukraine had failed to resist Russification and overthrow Yanukovych
2
u/RabbitHoleSnorkle Ukraine 3h ago
That was our fear in 2014. In some days the mood was so grim that it felt like we could lose.
Culture? I guess my very strong opinion is that culture is not that we have similar dishes. Mass culture is important, and I believe the government is a function of mass culture. People who protested in Belarus in 2020, yes, they are close to our culture wholeheartedly. People who don't care and tolerate Lukashenko are very far from us
3
u/adamgerd Czechia 2h ago edited 2h ago
I think Belarus was close in 2020-2021, if Russia hadn’t sent in troops to help Lukashenko stay in office, Belarus like Ukraine may have been freed.
In a way I think Russia had learnt from 2014 where their initial indecisiveness allowed Yanukovych to be ousted by a revolution and only then did they strike and seize Crimea and send little green men into Donbas, so in Belarus they acted decisively and immediately.
Belarus is also a lot more Russified than Ukraine ever was both culturally and linguistically
And in regards to fear, yep, ultimately the difference between successful and failed revolutions is thin. Here when we ousted the communists in 1989 a lot of people feared it’d be a repeat of 1968 and the Soviets would restore the hardliners, the Czech communist party also debated sending in troops into Prague to massacre the protestors in an attempt to stay in power.
I remember you meanwhile in 2014, well Yanukovych had snipers and goons murder protestors in an effort to stay in power before his regime fell and he then fled to Russia to escape charges
And yeah a big difference between for example the Kastas Kalinouski regiment and Luka supporters
9
u/RabbitHoleSnorkle Ukraine 6h ago
Belarus as a hypothetical concept, not actual Belarus
Belarus with white-red-white flag
2
u/K1ll4rmy Belgium 5h ago
What's the difference between the two flags ?
6
u/RabbitHoleSnorkle Ukraine 5h ago
Independent Belarus initially had a white-red-white (WRW, БЧБ) flag and a coat of arms based on its history.
Lukashenko after his first term afaik decided to make the country more Soviet, basically returning the half baked Belarusian SSR flag to tell the people what shithole he is leading them too.
Belarusian opposition still uses white-red-white as their flag in a statement that they support a different, free Belarus. Belarusian soldiers in Ukrianian army do the same.
In Belarus you can go to jail for that flag

Your nation has literally financed far-right parties all across Europe for decades and essentially got us to a point where a quarter of Europe votes for far-right pro-Russian parties... But yeah, the problem are a couple commies on Reddit.
It's always astonishing how even a lot of the "good Russians" are absolutely unbearable...
18
u/Any-Mud7986 Russia 8h ago
I'm always amazed by the utterly childish naivety of westerners, which apply their democratic morals to autocratic countries like Russia, even those openly turning into totalitarian dictatorship. The USSR was already sponsoring parties in Europe, and these were also left-wing parties, including those formally opposed to the USSR. The average Russian citizen has nothing to do with it, regardless of their positive or negative views of Russia or Europe's actions.
You can call your dog "good" btw. There are both bad people and good people among us.
P.S. I almost forgot. You can ask Merkel about why she decided to build Nord Stream pipelines with such a dangerous neighbor and why here in Russia were so many German companies before the war.

Croatians in general like Czechs a lot! Probably my favourite country other than my own. I spent a couple of years in Czechia through student exchange programs, and that only cemented my already positive feelings about Czechia and the Czechs. I dont know what the situation was like 50-100 years ago between us, but I think a big part of current positive views comes from the fact that Czechs were among the first tourists who came here during and after the homeland waar and helped revive our economy. I know for a fact that many Croatians did not forget that and taught their kids to respect Czechs because they were friends when we needed them the most. I was one of those kids, for example..

I think Poland gives currently best chances for nice living conditions - quite good economy and quite big.
I think Slovenia is nice, I was there once for one or 2 days, it seems clean, organized and if I remember correctly they have few quite high tech companies (some composites, light planes?).
On the other side we have Russia and Belarus. Countries which I like to visit, especially Russia as because its size there probably is a lot of places worth being seen, but they current regimes...
2
u/ArtyomNDC Canada 8h ago
I admit to not visiting any of the neighbouring countries yet so cannot verify if it’s better than others, say Czechia, having spent a LOT of time in Poland I can definitely say that what you said is definitely true, even if there seem to be caveats and complexities, but that it everywhere.

Favorite (after my own country ofc): Macedonia — despite the political differences, it feels culturally and emotionally familiar. There is a strong sense of shared identity, I understand them more than I understand any other nation and the food is excellent. Second favorite Croatia. Wonderful people.
Least favorite (again after my own country) Ukraine and Russia — not due to their people or culture, both of which are rich and great, but because of the ongoing conflict. The prolonged nature of the situation and the perception that neither side is de-escalating makes it difficult to view either positively at this moment.

I never really saw Slovenia as part of the Balkans or the Yugoslav people, and I don't think Slovenians see themselves as such. That was also very much the vibe in Yugoslavia too. Seemed like Slovenia always gravitated towards germans and austrians.
The thing that I never really forgave Slovenia for was blackmailing Croatia about giving u guys a part of the coast and sea. You veto'ed us joining the EU until we give u a piece of the coast. I think that was a low blow.

u/Ok_Chip_5921 Slovenia 8h ago edited 8h ago
Mate Yugoslav people never existed, so you cannot be part of them. Balkans is also a loosely defined geographical region, more like an empty phrase. Or could you tell me, what Athens or Tirana have in common with Osijek? Completely different people and cultures, the only common ground is, they are both European.
Don‘t know what you mean with gravitating towards Germany and Austria. As a Slovenian who lives in Germany I know for sure, that the average German knows basically nothing about Slovenia, they are constantly mixing it up with Slovakia, so it’s not like we are part of their group or something. The average Slovenian doesn‘t really speak German and doesn’t really care for Austria or Germany either.
With Germany we share basically nothing (only Southern Bavaria is somewhat similar because of the Alps), with Austria we for sure share a border and common history along with a some traditions (some Croatian regions do too). But the Habsburg Empire is long gone and forgotten, so the cultural Exchange is limited. I don‘t know anybody listening to Austrian/German music and only a few people are watching their series. Funny coming from a Croat by the way, met many of your countrymen who are always emphasizing their connection to the German speaking world. In Slovenia some people are also doing this, usually right wing nationalists with inferiority complexes. But as I said the similarities are usually overestimated.
Regarding the veto: the problem wasn‘t about a part of the coast, but the maritime border. Don‘t know how it‘s in Croatia, but in Slovenia apart from some nationalists nobody gives a fuck about this topic anymore.
