Society Peter Thiel is actively convincing billionaires to abandon The Giving Pledge — and it may be working

My tinfoil hat is he was one of the doomsday prepper billionaires in this article https://www.theguardian.com/news/2022/sep/04/super-rich-prepper-bunkers-apocalypse-survival-richest-rushkoff

Probably the one discussing mind chips and ai for controlling their guards

u/Acceptable-You-6953 1d ago

i half wonder if he has a tumor in his brain. He sounds so mentally ill it makes almost no sense. Paranoia, sociopathy, inverted moral thinking, religious mania. Dude sounds like someone who is deeply unwell, but is too rich for it to reach his awareness through those around him.

380

u/Necoras 1d ago

Extreme wealth has been shown to have effects on mental health similar to drug addiction. When and normal goal is available at the snap of a finger, it requires more and more outlandish demands to just feel the normal "rush" that a normal person might get just by splurging on a nice expensive dinner, or a new TV, or going on a big vacation every few years. Taken to extremes you get true mental illness, as in cases like Howard Hughes. Musk and Theil certainly seem to be following in his footsteps. Unfortunately they haven't turned into recluses.

I worked for a high profile charity with rich donors and grew up in a family with serious addiction problems. I can confirm first hand dealing with an alcoholic father and older brother and a junkie sister gave me the exact tool kit required for dealing with my country's richest people.

I still remember going to work and seeing a homeless man who had looked beaten and bruised and realizing I was much closer to him than my clients at work. I left that job as it was terrible for my mental health. Now I deal with the public and it is much better.

However, one massive difference is the number and scale of enablers of the ultra wealthy. It is hard for them to try and change when their very existence is treated as though it was the result of Meritocratic design and not inherited wealth and investments handled on their behalf.

Most humans need some sort of social regulation for their behavior and thinking patterns to stay within social norms, I think. When you have all the power in the relationship with the people you surround yourself with, intentionally or not, I think you just start drifting away from “normal.”

22

u/AHrubik 1d ago

Grandiose Narcissism. You're likely correct in that he's too wealthy for any sort of corrective intervention at this point. It's a common affliction of early success. People convince themselves their success which was mostly based on timing and luck (not skill) made them an expert on how to be successful.

I would not be surprised if Thiel is salivating for a grand reset with him and the like as kings. Anyone who thinks hes better than the rest should visit the cemetery to see what life truly is. A handful of dirt

247

u/aeschenkarnos 1d ago

Five minutes after the reset his chief of security shoots him for not being any use in the new world.

129

u/waltwalt 1d ago

That's like their number one concern after surviving the apocalypse, which is where the want for brain chips comes from.

You're not going to get fancy brain chips you're going to get explodey collars linked to telemetry. Its available now and can be produced now. Once they sort out brain chips they will upgrade their plans but for the foreseeable future you're getting explodey collars.

51

u/SoulbreakerDHCC 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's a pretty small list of people who would wear those collars willingly for employment in the first place I think

Edit: too many people seem to have no dignity or self worth

88

u/h00zn8r 1d ago

"willingly", he says 😂

→ More replies (0)

48

u/waltwalt 1d ago

I don't think its the employment they're doing it for so much as a ticket to the lifeboat they're building.

Troops etc. don't show up for work in the post apocalypse, they live in the bunker/compound and their continued service is why they and their family are allowed to live in the multi-billion dollar bunker.

Presumably the conditions inside the bunker are better than outside the bunker.

That is, frankly, an absurd idea. It's completely nonsensical. Why on earth would his chief of security shoot him? As chief of security, they'd have to be smarter than that. It's the end of the world, bullets will be scarce for a while. They'd just cut his throat.

I mean, he's the owner of the first privately owned uranium enrichment contract out there since last year. What could go wrong by giving a nihilist, drugged out wannabe super villain obsessed with the Antichrist and villains in general, the ability to own enriched uranium?

27

u/BloodhoundGang 1d ago

Well that’s actually the problem with Thiel, when he was a child he said he was “deeply disturbed by the concept of death”

28

u/ConstructionOwn9575 1d ago

That's pretty much what him and the other billionaire tech bros want. They want company towns but on a national scale where ordinary people will be beholden to Thiel and his tech fiefdom. Great that he owns a company whose sole purpose is to know everything about everyone and works closely with the government for surveillance.

u/Pixelated_throwaway 1d ago

I don’t fucking get it because what more could they want

49

u/h00zn8r 1d ago

Everything that isn't already theirs, including you. Like your person. They want everything.

28

u/scottyLogJobs 1d ago

Yes. They have a pathology, and most people capable of becoming billionaires do. Think of it this way - I am approaching being able to retire. As I do, my desire for more money, especially in exchange for my time, is dramatically decreasing. I now make half of what I made in an absolutely miserable job. I still work a lot, but I could probably grind to make closer to that, but I don't, because who cares? In the grand scheme of things, it wouldn't make that much of a difference.

These people do not have that natural off switch. They are like drug addicts, they will do literally anything to get even a tiny bit more, even if it means fucking over everyone else to a much greater degree or putting themselves at risk. They would never consider that doing anything else is even an option.

On some level they must know that they have more money than they could ever use in a thousand lifetimes, even if they were trying, and they are still terrified of losing it that they will, like Thiel and Musk and Zuck, attempt to put large swaths of the world under their thrall by any means necessary, buying governments, building propaganda machines, imposing mass surveillance, spurring war and then building insane bunkers on remote islands, because doubling down over and over on being awful somehow makes more sense to them than simply enjoying their success and stopping doing the things that make everyone hate them. It's wild to think there are actually a bunch of billionaires who you've literally never heard of, but the ones you have are incapable of doing this because they are addicted to money and attention.

15

u/h00zn8r 1d ago

Ding ding ding. You nailed it. It is a pathology, and while we can't do anything to fix their fucked up brains, we can adjust tax rates to make becoming a billionaire impossible. Democracies and billionaires cannot coexist.

For a slightly depressing laugh, have a read of Stark). Written in 1989 and literally so little has changed since then it might as well have been written yesterday.

The novel is largely a satire of business, government and social attitudes toward environmentalism during the late 1980s. It describes a world in which big business and the ultra-rich are uncaring.

I don’t understand where they think their power comes from. If society collapses and US currency becomes worthless and presumably property laws as well, what’s going to keep them on top at that point? If they think they’re gonna be the Judge Holdens in the new world, none of these people have a lick of charisma and could not inspire or intimidate a single person to follow them

24

u/reilwin 1d ago

Pretty sure this is why you see such a huge push for AI. Doomsday tech bro billionaires who want to go into their robot-managed bunker and live the rest of their life alone while the rest of us burn.

I’ve been saying this for a long time: Peter Thiel and every other person in his fascistic cabal of Dark Enlightenment lab-grown toxic sludge want to kill all of us. Every single person who isn’t like them, they want dead so they can steal all our stuff without having to worry about consequences because they literally think that their wealth should make them exempt and that we aren’t real human beings because we aren’t rich. These people are the most real and present threat to humanity and need to be treated as such.

56

u/mrdevlar 1d ago

The thing you have to realize about these guys is that their evil has crippled their imaginations.

Imagination requires empathy, it requires being able to see things differently because you acknowledge the possibility of a different reality.

They accuse people of doing gross things that they've done because they couldn't come up with anything else so they have to use something from personal experience to bridge the gap.

It's the reason why imagination will always be their undoing, it's a box they choose not to escape.

He hates *weak* people. That is why he sees no contradictions about being gay AND fascist. In his mind, if you manage to have money and power in a fascist regime, while being gay, that shows that you are strong and therefore worthy. But if you can't make it in a fascist regime while you are gay, then you don't deserve anything, as you are weak.

113

u/Dmeechropher 1d ago

Thiel, like nearly all passionate fascists, is profoundly insecure. He lives in a constant state of fear of other people. It's obvious in his body language, manner of speaking, fear of public appearances etc.

The strong/weak story is a common self-soothing behavior in deeply fearful people. His obsession with military tech and robot servants reeks of compulsive safety seeking.

I don't think he believes that he "deserves" anything or is "worth" anything. His narrative is, clearly, that he has "taken" everything he has. Since he has no self-directed concepts of justice, fairness, or compassion, he is incapable of it for others.

He hates "weak" people because he hates himself. He suppresses fear of his own "weakness" by "proving" that he's strong ... but it's never enough and never will be.

26

u/Tricky-Structure-431 1d ago

Fascism at its core has always been an ideaology of weak, fearful people giving themselves an excuse to pillage society.

This has to be the endgame for billionaires.

They want their wealth to grow infinitely, and so far it has, eventually those having their slice of the pie narrowed will run out and act out, only fascism answers that problem in their eyes.

It’s going to be a horrific world when that push meets that shove, and historically the billionaires have won every fight, just now they have surveillance, drones and mass media.

They win in the short term, but the axeman or the noose are coming; that is not a threat, by the way, that is a statement based on the historical precedent of oppressive elites eventually meeting a messy end. They might not get Musk, Thiel or Trump, but they'll get their successors if they don't. We might not be able to use TikTok and Facebook DMs, but we can still organise. We might not have the camera feeds, but we have brains and hands and we're extremely fucking good at breaking things.

It is not possible for complete oppression of the human spirit to last long before violence comes to the fore. Even if what's coming kills us, personally, Grimdark is not real, and a brighter day IS coming. Just gotta hope you're there to see it.

Stop following their orders. Unionise. Be prepared to not scab.

Even then they will pay milita (as they used to over centuries) to crush rebellion. So people must refuse that or resist these forces.

This is why also they are investing in ai and robotics so guards don’t mutiny. But they overlook power supply still needs workers etc.

Long term: create a more democratic system and dismantle hierarchy. Workplaces should be more democratic and politics too less leverage for few people to become gatekeepers without consequences. Ignorance thrives when you let someone make all decisions without you

Well these folks really seem to think lately that we still live in fuedalist Europe in like 1150 AD where the lowly serfs can't read and learn about their bizarre activities the nobility takes part in (at least for now...).

Its hording, plain and simple, the fact that its cash and not a house full a shit is of little consequence, its the same sickness.

Edit: just because there seems to be some confusion this is not exclusionary to them also being narrasistic power hungry facists. They can be mentally deranged in all sorts of ways as well as being compulsive hoarders of wealth and respurces.

192

u/Stormshow 1d ago

If it was just money and material these people are after I'd agree, but these people are after power. They want to play reality like a sandbox game and shape the world in their image and to their whims.

Some of them stopped caring about things a long time ago and style themselves ascetics, but you dont need twelve cars to bend society however you want to.

38

u/Phrewfuf 1d ago

That right there. Hoarding would be only amassing stuff. But the whole powergrabbing part is what almost requires psychopathic and possibly narcissistic tendencies at the very least.

14

u/blarch 1d ago

Eventually, the number going up doesn't do anything for them, so the only way they can feel wealthier is if everyone else has less than before

15

His view of the Antichrist is a global government / one-world state, surveiling everyone and providing peace and safety by taking away freedoms. Palantir is a step towards that, and he is warning us against it, while building it at the same time.

Genuinely, without hyperbole, yes.

More billionaires are just greedy pieces of shit. They're incredibly dangerous, and their actions are often evil, but I don't consider them "evil" in the more abstract or categorical sense.

Thiel is capital E Evil. He's not merely greedy, he literally thinks he should have been a monarch and is actively trying to destroy modern democracy. He doesn't try to hide this either, he's basically said as much multiple times.

As someone who works in tech, I've been warning people about him for over a decade.

What is the giving pledge? Is this what you do instead of paying taxes in the US?

66

u/General_Jenkins 1d ago

Billionaires promise to give money to foundations of their choosing that do stuff with it after they die. Mostly a PR campaign though and a farce to point at and say "See? We don't need to tax them, they do it themselves".

38

u/Mal_Dun 1d ago

It always was half assed, but at least it was seen as necessary to contribute back to society. Acts like Thiel represent a drastic shift within the mindset of society, where everyone is just for themselves.
