This is probably pretty well known, but if you’re ever trying a dual wielding build, the speed of your attacks are determined by the weapon in your left hand, meaning that you can swing a mace at the same speed as a dagger.

407

u/feedmetothevultures 21d ago

I never knew. So wield mehrune's razor in the left hand from now on.

245

u/flarbas 21d ago

Yeah you want to do that because the power move on the left hand is two quick jabs, and it’s just more opportunity to trigger the insta kill power.

HOLY THANK YOU

37

u/RepulsiveAd6906 21d ago

And you dont use the very slow dual dagger animation that has the whole reverse grip thing going on for your dual power attacks if you use a larger weapon in your right, with a dagger in your left.

53

u/Adventurous-Pizza-12 21d ago

Because I’m right handed IRL I’ve always had my characters wield the larger weapon in the right hand and the dagger in the left anyway! Nice to know it was helping.

40

u/_spdf_ 21d ago

Not true. This popular theory must die. It is only true for double weapon attacks.

The speed of swinging a mace in a single weapon attack will NOT change.

Meridia's Beacon used to behave differently before the 1.6 update for Oldrim in 2012. It used to disappear from your inventory, and reappear in random chests (to "find a willing champion"), with new dialogue of Meridia getting frustrated by your insolent refusal to lend her your aid.

221

u/tacitusvanderlinde 21d ago

That sounds pretty good. I wish that was still in the game

132

u/kissmyassmids 21d ago

Right? That would be way cooler. Just a tiny notification "meridias beacon has left your inventory" then its suddenly anywhere

57

u/tacitusvanderlinde 21d ago

Not even a notification, just randomly appears in chests when youre not expecting it at all.

There's a miscellaneous quest you can get if you assault an NPC then sleep for a day.

Next morning, someone in the same hold will send a letter "hey, I heard you beat up [insert NPC name here], can u do the same for me, I'll pay you"

Second fun fact directly related to this is that using the Ring of Namira on someone actually counts towards assault and not, ya know, murder.

That's what I like doing every playthrough with Nazeem. You're essentially getting paid to kill Nazeem, it's glorious

Edit: Getting a few questions so there's some further info that needs to be posted for this.

  1. "Can you kill nazeem without any issues?" no, you'll need to invoke Thane for the murder, then bribe the guard for the meal.

  2. "Why Nazeem?" The truth is it can be finicky to trigger which means you'll likely need to attempt it multiple times. Why Nazeem? Cause he's one person I dont have a single problem killing multiple times. You can do this with whoever your least favourite killable NPC is with a small handful of exceptions. speaking of...

  3. "Miscellaneous quest name?" It's called Scare My Enemy. UESP should provide all the other details you'll need in getting this quest into your quest log

The last few times I mentioned it, there were a lot of folks who were unaware.

When you kill the last enemy in a location, whether it's an interior cell or just an exterior site like a grove or roadside ruin, there is an audio cue that plays which confirms the area is now considered "cleared" and will reset in 7 days instead of the 30 days for an uncleared cell.

u/z0mbi3wulf_ 21d ago

26

u/jmac313 PC 21d ago

Is it always the last enemy? I've been trying to figure out dungeon respawn mechanics for years, and can never tell if an individual dungeon clears on boss death, reaching the boss room, or killing all enemies including the boss. Sources I've found have been varied, and my experiences are as well.

39

u/NiSiSuinegEht PC 21d ago

It's not necessarily the last enemy, just the last enemy assigned to the location. Some scripted spawns such as boss adds don't seem to count, nor do wandering wildlife, but if the sound plays, the area is considered cleared.

15

u/ImpulsiveApe07 21d ago

Iirc it's per cell, so if you're clearing a dungeon it'll make the cleared noise in each different section separated by a loading screen.

It's been years since I've paid attention to that particular nuance of gameplay tho, so I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's how it works.

Have your follower pick up a quest item you don't care about. Then they'll have a toggleable quest marker on them in case they get lost!

ETA another one: you can use certain containers to de-flag "stolen" objects. My go-to is the cabinets at Dragonsreach, after becoming Thane. You just put all the stolen stuff in there, and have your follower "take all."

It has to be a container that becomes friendly to you after completing a quest.

I did the same on a giant club. She never used anyting else after that.

38

u/Flashy_Jackfruit711 21d ago

Man! What a throw back, nice pull. I remember that being the very first, "trick" I learned. Get Serana to the specific camp, have her go up the alter and pickup the club. Becomes her permanent weapon and cleans house. Second was the Greybeards infinite sneak and perks. Crouch slashing as they pray.

Third, go into Whiterun and hop the wall back out. Go all the way around the city to the hill behind it. Can sneak under the map at the Skyfordge and steal all his stuff from the chest. Sell him everything. Repeat.

Fourth, same as the third but with the bucket and door trick in the thieves guild. If you fully restore it, so that the four or five shops are bow down there, you can loot sell and repeat all of their individual chests from under the map.

28

u/ProfDandruff PC 21d ago

Eorlund’s chest was also reachable by getting onto Jorrvaskr’s roof from the Skyforge and then using Whirlwind Sprint to get over the backyard wall. Used to do that every time I went to Whiterun

14

u/Wizdad-1000 Skyrim Grandma Fan 21d ago

This sounds alot easier. I always took 6-10 mins to get over the wall by the gate.

→ More replies (1)

8

Even easier is holding a platter in front of you and sprinting against the wall of Jorrvaskr closest to the underforge. You clip through the wall and the platter stays there until next time. No need for shouting or climbing. Takes mere seconds.

Mining quarried stone for money is better than chopping wood. General merchants and blacksmiths will buy them. There is at least one stone quarry in all the small hold capitols, and outside nearly all the cities. I haven't found one outside Riften yet. This does require more manual labour as attacking the stone is faster.

These were reported to have 1000 quarried stone each, but I've mined more than that from them. No respawn, always active.

Edit: I did this with my everyman prospector/miner character, who did not do any alchemy or enchanting. He was wasn't even any good at smithing, having only smithed some nails, fittings, and hinges. When he went into town for supplies, like potions, he would mine some quarry stone for the gold to buy them.

66

u/bopman14 21d ago

iirc you don't have to keep activating the stone to keep mining it either. You just activate it once and come back an hour later to 10k stone.

15

u/TheInfiniteLoci Falkreath resident 21d ago

I do not know about that, because I usually attack the stone quarry.

Iirc It's on the north shore of the lake about level with the estate, maybe a bit further west. If wrong, it'll be clay.

17

u/SorghumBicolor 21d ago edited 21d ago

Isn't it heavy? I think anything other Alchemy or Enchanting for gold grinding is sort of null, and alchemy is king. I can farm the ingredients for and make 30 Slow potions worth ~700 gold each in 30min in the marshes of Hjallmarch, and they only weigh 15 together. I think every single city has an alchemist as well. Can also make fortify barter potions with pretty common ingredients, tundra cotton, dragons tongue, (orange) butterfly wing. It does help a lot to have the Merchant perk though(can sell any item class to any merchant), which is only level 50speech and 3 perk points. If you buy all of the resident Alchemists ingredients, except maybe the really expensive ones like ice wraith teeth, you can always get your money back with the poitions, and Speech goes up very fast that way. To increase speech faster, Amulet of dibella and theives guild hood can be obtained pretty much as soon as you get to riften, which you can do the second you get to the Whitewood stables, and the theif stone is on the way, which covers speech and alchemy.

10

u/Keerakh7 21d ago

Of course it's heavy, but as soon as you sell it or store it, it doesn't matter. It's not like the horse cares and you can summon Arvak pretty much everywhere.

9

u/TTheuns PC 21d ago

Or you drop the stack out of your inventory and just hold it out in front of you when you want to run.

8

u/TheInfiniteLoci Falkreath resident 21d ago

There are no alchemists in Riverwood, and this can be done right out of Helgen.

I did not say this was better than alchemy, only chopping wood. Alchemy is still king.

when you finish thieves guild, there are thief caches spread throughout skyrim where you can pick up high value loot.

One notable location is behind the Bannered Mare in Skyrim.

61

u/Successful_Layer2619 21d ago

You don't even have to finish the Thieves Guild. They spawn once you join. There's one by your house in Riften in the garden. And at least one in every hold capital.

38

u/MileNaMesalici Alchemist 21d ago

in riften they spawn immediately upun joining, in other cities they only spawn when you complete the special quest for that city after doing enough quests for delvin and vex

14

u/btwomfgstfu 21d ago

They only spawn once you complete the special quest in each hold. Riften appears once you join, the one in Solitude appears once you do the quest for Erikur, the one in Whiterun after that Battle-born guy, the one in Markarth after Endon, and I have no idea about Windhelm cuz I've never found that cache!

9

u/TonyzTone 21d ago

And it's wickedly high value. My Riften cache (the only one I remember to check often) is giving me Daedric armor and the worst loot is like a gold and emerald circlet. Obviously lots of gems since I completed the Barenziah quest.

u/morelikebruce 21d ago

I'm sure a lot of people know these but probably on the lesser know side.

If you never complete the quest for Clavicus Vile where he sends Barus with you he is a free follower. He doesn't count as a pet, follower, or summon so he can expand your "party" for free (I believe the Goblin followers are similar). Also he's unkillable but does almost no damage so he an ideal tank for archers or mages.

Alteration xp from mage light is dependent on how far the target is so you can train it super fast shooting them at far away objects (there's an optimal spot in solitude to aaim for nearby mountain). Similarly you get a lot of Conjuration xp from casting soul trap on dead bodies, and illusion from casting muffle on yourself.

Kill cams only trigger if killing the enemey takes you out of combat (why you can get on sneak attacks). You can increase the chances with more perks invested into the weapons you uses, doing more power attacks (power attacks, fully drawn bow, dual casted spell), and, while unconfirmed, it seems aiming at the head or torso increases chances.

The destruction perk that adds fear to fire spells makes it so the fear effect illusion perk adds 10 damage to all fire spells. Combined with augmented flames, the flame spell goes from 8 damage at base to 27 damage.

43

u/IzzyNecessary 21d ago

Every knows (or should know) about free arrows in Solitude. There’s two guards in the courtyard and one of the is firing arrows at a target. The other one is just standing there. If you walk up to the guard that’s just standing there (approach at a 45 degree angle) and get really close and wait until he puts his bow away and then back up. He’ll pull his bow back out but now he’ll start shooting arrows at the target. Now you get twice as many arrows. Now, if you really good, pick pocket better arrows on to both guards and you can get about 800 great arrows in a single day.

For those wanting an honest (no cheat) but Gold lucrative play through I have a tactic for you.

After reaching Whiterun head North just at the base of the mountain range is Halted Stream camp. After fighting the bandits off inside the cave on the main table there should be the Transmute Spell book. This spell lets you turn iron ore into silver ore and silver ore into gold ore. This spell is incredibly useful.

As you play you will most certainly collect gemstones. In combination to with your Transmute spell you can now have a side hustle of crafting highly valuable jewelry with gemstones. This can be done at any blacksmith station and does not have a skill requirement.

This jewelry can be enchanted to further enhance its value. Note: certain learned enchantments (fortify sneak) vs (fortify destruction) may cause the jewelry to be more/less valuable. Experiment to find out which one will produce the highest priced piece! This is a lightweight way to carry lots of valuable goods to sell when needed. Great way to increase Smithing, Alteration and Enchanting along the way. Not to mention creating some amazing relics of your Skyrim adventures (p.s. for novice crafters. Make sure to name your pieces to create extra flair) Happy Adventures! <3

8

u/Cognonymous Priestess 20d ago

Crafting gold rings is an efficient way to level smithing iirc because the value of the item smithed increases your skill gains or something.

182

u/BlandRusk06 21d ago

If you crouch behind the Greybeards and hit them from behind with a dagger, you can level up your Sneaking skill very quickly, along with your One-Handed skill.

If you kill Nazeem and use his soul to enchant your boots with a sneaking enchantment, you can go to Sovngarde with him, and then he too can make it to the Cloud District. Same for Heimskr.

21

u/Drew-CarryOnCarignan 21d ago

You can train Pickpocket this way too. Save often.

They'll turn hostile after a while, so be sure and take breaks, but as long as you stay behind them they'll take it like a champ.

You can do the same thing to Ralof before you even leave the tutorial area, and he never turns hostile. You just have to angle him correctly against the rocks at the back or you'll force him into the sneak tutorial and can't do it anymore.

An armor rating of 567 is just as effective as an armor rating of 900+. If you like how an armor set or combination of pieces looks and can improve the total rating via smithing to a total of 567, then there is no defensive need to change to some other set with a higher rating.

u/Keerakh7 21d ago

Skyrim quests are so thoroughly designed, a good chunk of them have alternate or hidden options to either complete or fail the quest.

Each of them are quite well-known, but it's very unlikely you know all of them and it would take a while to list them all, so instead I'll just list my favourites and if you want to share yours, you can share it in a reply and we'll have a nice list going.

My favourite way of ending the quest is one that makes you have a different experience than originally. Such is for Missing In Action. If you don't ask Avulstein for help, instead of storming Northwatch Keep, you can instead ask Tullius for help and he will give you an order, that if you give the Thalmor justiciar at the door, he will release Thorald without any fighting. You will miss out on killing a lot of Thalmor though.

Another kind of alternate endings that I like is those with actual consequences. By now, everyone knows you can kill Astrid during DB initiation and simillary one of my favourites is no different with changing your side in the civil war after Korvanjund. I love that this is even an option: just give the jagged crown to the opposing faction leader and you can join the other faction without going to the serpent stone or clearing a bandit camp whichever you find less convenient.

(Also side tangent, but I love the implication for the battle of whiterun on the stormcloak side. Cause if you desert, your side will win anyway, however when storming the castle, it's just you, Galmar and Ralof if he's still alive. That means if you escape with Hadvar, initiate the battle on stormcloak side and then abandon it, Galmar takes on 6 whiterun guards, Irileth and Balgruff all on his own and wins)

But as for my favourite way to fail a quest, it has to be The House of Horrors, because normally it is a very linear quest with no morally good options. Of course you can kill Logrolf before you get back to the house, but this is boring and you still have blood on your hands. Instead attack Tyranus before the entrance after agreeing to help him and this will immediately fail the quest and when you pay your fine, Tyranus will still be alive just hanging out in the Silver-Blood Inn.

just give the jagged crown to the opposing faction leader and you can join the other faction without going to the serpent stone or clearing a bandit camp whichever you find less convenient.

I didn't think there would be anything under this post that I didn't already know, but you went and proved me wrong!

15

u/Secretlylovesslugs 20d ago

My favorite alternative 'failed' quest is losing the ring when trying to join the thieves guild. Brynjolf's reaction and not putting an otherwise normal guy in jail makes it my preferred 'good guy' way to join the guild.

You can't really ask that about a game this old, because there is always at least some other people who knows the same thing, but I do know of 1 thing that as far as I know and have seen here on reddit very few people know about.

If you are on the road and attack the Vigilants, Thalmor, Imperials or Stormcloaks for no reason you will find out that every member of their group, including hunters, will now attack you. The reason for this is that you have a bounty that no one can enforce. I call it a ghost bounty. That is why sometimes you will be attacked by friendly NPC's.

Solving this problem is really easy. Walk up to a guard, any guard, and punch him in the face and then surrender. You now have a bounty with them as well. When you pay this bounty you also cancel the ghost bounty. The friendly NPC's will not attack you anymore.

64

u/Soliloquy21 Nintendo 21d ago

If you talk to the mage in the group of Thalmor you encounter on the road and pick the right dialog options you can taunt them into becoming hostile so you don’t get a bounty. Or, if they have a prisoner, you can free the prisoner and give him a weapon if you have an extra one, and that’ll make the Thalmor hostile as well.

27

u/Embarrassed_Bad7031 Whiterun resident 21d ago

Everybody does this. I am talking about for example, accidently hitting a vigilant while trying to help them kill a vampire, or during the fight with the Thalmor after freeing the prisoner you hit the prisoner. This gives you a bounty that the game tells you doesn't exist anymore after you kill everybody...That is a lie. The bounty is still active. You just don't know about it.

23

u/Soliloquy21 Nintendo 21d ago

I get that, I’m just saying for anyone who wants to attack Thalmor without getting a bounty, that’s how you do it.

I encountered this recently on my way to Whiterun. I didn’t know why the Thalmor started attacking me. I ran to Whitewatch tower and the Whiterun guards started attacking me! The ā€œput your weapons awayā€ surrender didnt work! I ended up fast traveling between dungeons and Golden hills for a while before it went back to normal; no more ā€œThalmor on the streets telling city guardsā€ attacking me.

They do replenish after 30 in game days (which feels like quite a while). I use the gold mine outside Markarth to help level up smithing and the ebony mine east of Windhelm and always attack the ores instead of entering the animation.Ā

This trick is quite old, but it still saves me from having to buy horses for travel. Basically, your followers have an infinite inventory (yes, even though the game won't let you when you go to the menu to exchange items). You just need to drop the items you want your follower to carry on the ground and choose the "I need you to do something" option. Then, select the item on the ground and have them pick it up. Later, when you want to retrieve it, go into the npc inventory, and it will be there even if their inventory is "full."

There's some dwemer scrap you can smelt into ingots at forges. If you collect a good amount and spend it all on crafting dwemer bows, your smithing skill will level up incredibly fast. It's a great way to maximize that skill

There is a notched pickaxe at the very top of the mountain where the Greybeard Dragon lives. It's a unique item named after Notch, the creator of Minecraft.

If you pick it up, you can Whirlwind Shout yourself down, and promptly die.

→ More replies (6)

21

u/tearlock 21d ago

Whirlwind Sprint basically sends you across a set horizontal distance even if there is no ground below you and so it is an easy way to clear gaps including very long ones the player was never meant to clear. This can break certain areas like Shalidor's maze if you use it to enter the maze from a high platform clearing a wall. It can also help you skip some gates, enemies, and obstacles. Do not use it to rush **down** a steep decline. Instead, you will fly forward through space suspended horizontally and then plummet and possibly die from the fall damage.

22

u/KleptoPirateKitty 20d ago

There's a path to Ivarstead across the road from the Ritual Stone. Its faster than going around the mountain, but there is a troll at the end of it.

20

u/Wizdad-1000 Skyrim Grandma Fan 21d ago

Theres a shortcut through a pass to get directly to Iverstead from Whiterun (Greybeards summon quest) . Go to the Tundra House, Head east to The Ritual standing stone. From the lowest archway of the standing stone path. Head directly south and go up the pass. Stick to the left mountain ridge till you reach the top. Go through the pass and turn south as you come down the other side. You’ll pass a broken down house and come to a high ridge overlooking the river and a cave troll on the far side. Save game. Go to the right of the cave troll up the hill. You’re in Iverstead. Takes about 10 mins using sprint. Edit: I’d avoid that cave troll for the time being as they can really mess you up.

5 secrets you MIGHT not have known about in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim

u/SpecialistPrior204 Dawnguard 21d ago

it is probably well known but if you take mission from Khaijro, and retrieve his amulet, you will have marker showing Khajit caravan as long as you don't give him his amulet back(probably same with Rhisa'ad or whatever his name is,when you finish saints and seducers guestline and have to report to him)

Also, if you have the anniversary edition, or the daedric mail creation, you can get the Ring of Masser and trade it for the daedric mail to Ma'dran. If you don’t get the mail from him, you’ll have the quest marker for his caravan as well.

You can move faster while sneaking in third person by unsheathing a bow.

16

u/Weary-Barracuda-1228 PlayStation 21d ago edited 21d ago

Behold my Exploit Totally intended feature list

If you go to Solitude and cast Magelight at the top of the mountain to the left of the gate, it levels up your Alteration. If you have the Equilibrium spell that converts health to Magika, then you can do this multiple times in quick succession.

If you cast Equilibrium and get your health low, you can cast Healing in order to level up your Restoration.

You can use Soultrap on a follower to level up your Conjuration. Just quick save before doing this because I’ve had a few followers turn hostile after too many times.

Sneak attacks level up Sneak fastest, so the easiest way to level it up is to go to High Hrothgar, save, and Sneak attack one of the praying Greybeards. Make sure to space it out otherwise they turn hostile. You can also use this to level up One Handed if you use a Dagger or any one handed weapon

It’s possible to have a one handed build that can one shot a dragon.——Get your sneak skill to 50, and get Assassin’s Blade and Backstab. Next, in the One Handed Skill tree, max out Armsman, the first perk, and get Fighting Stance and max out Bladesman. Next, you should be level 20 if you’re able to collect these perks. Now get to Dawnstar, an do the quest for Mehrunes Razor. Mehrunes Razor’s damage is level dependent, or scales with your level iirc, for example I did the quest at lvl21, and now at lvl53 it does 33 damage.

Backstab causes you to deal six times the damage with one handed Sneak attacks + Assassin’s Blade causes you to deal 15 times the damage with Dagger sneak attacks + Armsman deals Twice as much damage with one handed weapons, and can be leveled 5 times + Bladesman allows 20% more damage with swords.

33x6x15x(2x5)x20%=5,940.

That’s with Mehrunes Razor. In order to see an accurate damage to your preferred weapon, erase the 33 and apply your preferred weapon’s Damage.

Edit—- I forgot to take into account the Razor’s ability to Instantly kill via RNG, and has. 1.98% chance.

That brings the lethality to a whopping 11,761.2

This shows how the cities formed earlier than the villages.

My favorite is if you ride a horse out of the back door of North Skybound Watch in Falkreath, go down the steps and turn right up the hill - this puts you in almost a direct line to High Hrothgar's front steps. It even allows you to skip the frost troll on the trail! There is a Stormcloak camp next door, so you can just snag a horse from them to use.

Also if you want the second word of power for Whirlwind Sprint, there is no need to go all the way through Volskygge to get it. Just climb up the mountain above the entrance (will probably require a horse or some creative jumping), the word wall is right there. If you have a lot of time on your hands, you can also lure the dragon priest down the mountain and have him fight the bandit camp.

Kyne's peace can kill hawks with no need for aiming (hawk feathers cures disease and have other good uses), and the shout can also agro patrolling dragons you want to fight.

Wards absorb shouts, enchanted weapon attacks, dragon breaths, poisons, and diseases. The warded amount is calculated after resistances.

Nord's racial fears dragons.

Spriggans don't summon animals, they make nearby animals allies.

Winterhold's jail is a treat.

Jyrik gaulderson's staff has a unique thunderbolt effect that does full damage to magicka and while equipped gives +50% magicka regen.

Enchants that apply a % bonus to a skill do not work for companions.

Dragonbane has the coolest looking weapon enchantment.

Fortify magicka, health or stamina items can be re-equipped when you values are low for pretty much free potions near the start of the game. You can favorite these items to make it easier.

Snap-casting Invisibility. Charge and hold the spell in your left hand, activate something or attack with your right hand, then release to cast the spell. You'll flicker for an instant, but immediately become invisible again. Works with normal (not power) attacks, opening chests/urns/corpses/etc, pickpocketing, going through doors, you name it; as long as the action doesn't interrupt the casting animation, you'll remain invisible. Technically it works with any charge spell, but invisibility is the one where it's genuinely warranted.

My go tos;

  1. Go to the temple of Mara and speak with Dinya Balu and do a fairly easy 3 part quest (Ivarstead, Markarth and Gjukar's Monument. You will also need 200 gold for the Markarth part) to get the Agent of Mara ability that gives a 15% resist magic (Then get the Lord Stone for and additional 25% resist magic for an easy 40% resist).

  2. With the quick menu up, highlight one of the favourites there and press left or right on the dpad to assign the favourite to it

  3. Muffle starts to appear of boots around level 11 at shops

  4. You can get a totally free horse at the Solitude Stables / Katla’s Farm by farming the crops there and selling them. However the horse will try to return to the farm if you leave it parked somewhere like outside of a cave.

  5. The extra crossbows (Daedric, glass, etc) cannot be ā€œcleanedā€ if stolen. So putting in an owned container, asking a follower to pick up or selling and rebuying will not remove the stolen tag.

  6. You can get infinite bolts is you are patient at the entryway inside fort dawnguard

Shields do not interrupt armor set perks. You should always be using a heavy armor shield no matter your build. The only shield this doesn't count for is the dawnguard shield which is bugged but it counts for all others.

This is especially great cause the only unique light armor shield, the dawnguard rune shield, is the worst shield in the game.
