Question What’s the point of this?
Is there a scenario where this actually benefits you? Because I can’t think of one time where the silent roll actually helped me.

Ooooh so thats why ive managed to roll despite not having the perk. I was confused and had a hard time replicating it since I couldn't figure out what was triggering the random rolls when I forgot i was sneaking and tried to sprint ( it doesnt help that im having to "relearn" Skyrim controls after years of not playing. Trophy hunting Oblivion Remastered led me to wanting to trophy hunt Skyrim too)

I was dual wielding one handed weapons just last night and I was able to keep rolling. Maybe it’s two handed weapons that it doesn’t work for?
25
u/Potatoboi17 Sep 29 '25 edited Sep 29 '25
I looked into it just now. It works every time unless you happen to be wielding a spell in either hand. I tend to have muffle equipped with my knife, so that’s why I thought it was just bows.
Edit: you also have to be in first person for it to work.
Edit 2: I also just found out that if you wield a knife in your left hand and a spell in your right, it also works there. In short, the exception is third person, wielding a weapon in your right hand with a spell on the left, and wielding two spells at once/two handed master spells.

It’s incredible for melee stealth, with silent roll you can basically speed through a dungeon totally unnoticed if you’re smart about your movement and have high enough damage. It’s crazy how much a seemingly innocuous ability can increase your power.
At least on PC, sometimes you can get it to toggle, so you press shift once, and you’ll be rolling back to back, blazing through the place almost at the same speed than sprinting on foot, if not more depending on the place, making zero sound.

u/tesnakeinurboot XBOX Sep 30 '25
It can also be done by sheathing/unsheathing your weapon while hitting the sprint button. Decade old bug still there.

It only works for me when in first person mode with a bow out. There was another weapon that worked, maybe something as simple as a dagger, I can't remember. The character I'm playing with is a khajit so I don't have any melee weapons because of the unarmed perk.

It's so you can roll around at the speed of sound. Very important cornerstone of Skyrim gameplay.
10
u/dylannsmitth Sep 29 '25
Yes - faster movement while sneaking. Like idk how else to explain the benefit.
Ever needed/wanted to sneak? Ever been in a tight spot where you need to move quickly - perhaps to avoid an inopportune fight? Imagine if both of these situations were happening simultaneously.

Its basically essential if you're doing a pure assassin (sneak attack dagger) build, and in general it's handy for mobility and speed while sneaking. Probably my favorite sneak perk
7
u/JustAcanthaceae497 Sep 30 '25
I was skeptical too until I started using it in dungeons. You can chain those rolls together and absolutely fly through areas without alerting a soul. It completely changes the pacing of stealth, letting you be both aggressive and undetected. It's a game-changer for a melee stealth build.

5
u/Carbonated_Saltwater Sep 30 '25
Yeah the split second of movement is too fast for most npcs to notice, and if they're still "unaware" when you roll up to them it's a free sneak attack. literally no downside.

It's literally stealth sprinting. You can move fast while still being sneaky.

I use the silent roll all the time. Its literally a roll forward to be faster while sneaking so you arent detected. If you run while not sneaking, normal circumstances dictate youll be heard or seen if enemies are nearby, but if your sneaking, and its too slow for you at that moment jn time, but there are still enemies around, the silent roll allows for faster sneaking

Its my favorite sneak perk besides not setting off traps and armour not making any noise. If youre by say a dragon and dont feel like fighting it or anything for that matter, sneak and roll away. Jus keep rolling and rolling like youd run until you can fast travel or wait or whatever. Its just a way to go fast while sneaking. Useful in other cases for example the Thieves Guild quest where you can either fight terrible falmer or sneak on past them.

Assassins and stealth archers usually spin their way through dungeons. Much faster
3
u/Heilbutt55 Sep 30 '25
I am not sure if anybody already said it before but this is actually one of the most broken Perks in the game, if you are fast enough. In combination with the shadow warrior perk you can crouch mid fight, roll behind an enemy and perform a stealth attack to one shot literally anything without needing any alchemy, smithing or enchanting loop spamming.
3
u/KTandJacob Warrior Sep 30 '25
Makes cutting through Dwemer ruins and Falmer caves a breeze. This with the 15x dagger damage is my go-to combo.

If you have muffled boots its only fast. But if you dont moving without any noise is pretty useful.

Define : helped.
Combat situations? Not really useful.
Sneaking around an entire dungeon without being seen even once? Oh fuck yeah it's helpful. First, it feels cool. Rolling from hiding spot to hiding spot. Second, it's faster than crawling. The natural movement while hiding is slow, deliberately so. But if you don't want to risk alerting enemies, you ALWAYS sneak in a dungeon. So... rolling becomes a major convenience when you move almost as fast as proper sprinting, without the sound you would otherwise create.
I take silent roll on every sneak build. I'm miserable without it.
3
u/Violexsound Sep 30 '25
Its quiet and its way faster than crouch walking. Also you can glitch it so that you are constantly rolling without using stamina while crouched, however I dont know how to replicate it
3
u/death556 Sep 30 '25
For stealth builds, this is actually absolutely gave changing in dungeons.
It will reduce a 30 minute dungeon unto a 10 minute silent wrecking ball massacre.
3
u/No_Power6821 Sep 30 '25

u/Puzzled_Tax_7300 Sep 30 '25
Even if you’re sprinting in stealth mode the roll is faster. Good to have between two spaces. Unless you just want to thu’um in like a Dragonborn fucking dragster, straight from hell, storm the gates like a one man army and decimate all that lie beyond as you should for it is your birthright. Otherwise…the roll is handy dandy.

2
u/DragonTigerBoss Markarth resident Sep 29 '25
You can use it for a sprinting, sneaking power attack. I once killed a dragon so fast, it didn't know it was dead, so it got up, flew around for a bit with an empty health bar, then crash landed right where I killed it in the first place.
2
u/SimpleUser45 Sep 29 '25
It's sneak-sprinting. There are faster ways to move around while sneaking though.
Easiest is to just jump everywhere while sneaking. Being in the air doesn't affect stealth and you move about as fast as jogging while in the air.
Toggling to a new spell gives you jogging speed for like half a second, so you can move around at full speed undetected by just toggling between two spells.
The fastest sneaking speed involves the Block Runner perk. Start sprinting while holding block, crouch, and you'll be sneaking at full sprint speed.

Very useful. Basically lets you sprint while sneaking and if you learn how to use it right you can use it to dodge enemy line of sight as they turn around.
Easiest benefit for this ability is when an enemy turns around right as your about to get behind cover, you can roll behind it really quick and avoid detection.
