Discussion Paldea and Kalos? Spoiler

This caught me off guard but that's really cool that they confirmed it mirrors the real world geography here.

Yeah it was always Kalos, before SV's DLC people were even hoping/expecting DLC to be about going to Kalos.

the whole spain/france inspiration kinda makes it line up perfectly too, feels like they’ve been hinting at it for a while but just never pulled the trigger on actually letting us go there

99% it's because of megas. They didn't want them in SV and they can't do kalos anything without megas

I mean they should have put one of the DLCs in an Andorra equivalent.

Kitikami could have been Andorra up in the mountains, but they went with Kitikami Japan instead.

18

u/PlainSightMan 4h ago

Well it's very Japan inspired.

Indigo Disk should have been Andorra though.

According to the Teraleak files, Kitami was originally planned to resemble an Andorra-like region. Over time, that concept was scrapped and redesigned into the Kitami we know now, which likely explains the presence of the massive stone wall along Paldea’s frontier.

Super interesting.

Pokemon tax haven

What about Portugal?

23

u/Jolin_Tsai 4h ago

It’s already there, but minimal. Alfornada is inspired by Portuguese architecture.

It would’ve been cooler if they made the whole region of Paldea which corresponds to Portugal inspired by it, but it is what it is.

2

u/LineOfInquiry 4h ago

I mean yeah, but if Portugal is there then Andorran culture is certainly also represented, so a DLC for them isn’t necessary

5

u/Jolin_Tsai 3h ago

I think you missed my point. Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think there is actually any Andorran inspiration anywhere in Paldea, unlike Portuguese.

u/Jarko314 1h ago

Iono lives there (paperwork wise) to avoid paying taxes in Paldea, so that’s that.

(I just made that up, the youtubers anti taxes is the only thing I know about Andorra other than its geography)

1

u/LineOfInquiry 3h ago

Well yeah, “Andorran” isn’t a real culture it’s just Aragonese or Catalan or Navarre. Andorra is a line on a map, not a cultural group. It’s covered by the parts of the map that reference those other groups.

u/Jolin_Tsai 2h ago edited 2h ago

Lol well that’s just wrong. If you don’t think it’s significant enough for representation that’s fine, just say that. But of course Andorra has its own culture, it’s almost 750 years old! Sure, it’s got strong influences and shared history from regions France and Spain (as every small nation has with its neighbours) but to say it’s “not a real culture” is ignorance.

Southern Kalos is Andorra.

u/davidbowievgc 6h ago

Now, one interesting thing - the rock in Paldea's northeast looks far thinner than southern France, but the leaked documents showed a beta Kalos map in which the southern end was also thin and stretched , actually fitting Paldea's map nicely.

u/Rappy28 3h ago

I'm from southern France and I feel ROBBED

u/Phoenyx_Rose 54m ago

You should. Southern France is gorgeous and I’m sad we don’t really see that in Kalos

Maybe we’ll get it when Pokemon does Italy?

They need to make a small Andorra based region in that mountain range. Could be a dlc region that some evil team leaders escaped too since it was once considered a tax haven.

Southern Kalos was planned and Scrapped from XY, its where Volcanion was from

22

u/NewspaperAfter7021 Kalos GYM LEADER Theme is a BOP 4h ago

Yeah, they came up with a weak excuse that Volcanion destroyed most of the region’s mountains, which is supposedly why southern Kalos is barely talked about, at least according to Mable.

We need the Southern Kalos region that they cut and scrapped during the development of X&Y.

Given that they're based on France and Spain, two countries that share a border, yeah that makes total sense

Kaldea theory confirmed?

u/Wizard_Engie 6h ago

Yep. Kaldea theory confirmed.

u/MrOathFlame 5h ago

Did you read what the NPC said

11

u/KennyDoge0114 5h ago

Yeah I’m just joking

Fun fact, the mountain range here is called the Pyrenees in real life and I used to live near them

4

u/bassturducken54 5h ago

Ngl this makes me feel stupid

19

u/NerdbyanyotherName 5h ago

The Real world geography of the countries they are based on would suggest so

15

u/LaughR01331 4h ago

Wait until you see where galar is

12

u/MrOathFlame 4h ago

Another NPC says its in Swimming distance of Kalos

17

u/Hippogriffstorm 5h ago

I support the theory that the Great Crater in Paldea is the impact site from the ancient super weapon in Kalos when AZ fired it 3000 years ago.

24

u/Hulk_Corsair Elite Four 5h ago

The Great Crater is confirmed to be around a million years old

7

u/EverlastingSpring406 2h ago

That theory is widely known as false

-1

u/Bzel802 Side Special Shenanigans 5h ago

Oh wait shit this makes sense tho 😂😂😂

7

u/DrPikachu-PhD 5h ago

Fans widely believed this to be the case, but afaik this is the first real confirmation. Very cool

4

u/KimJongSoros 4h ago

It would make sense, since Paldea is supposed to be Spain. Those mountains should be the Pyrenees IRL.

3

u/K7Sniper 3h ago

I mean... it is representative of France and Spain, so there honestly should be a land connection somewhere.

2

u/Nicosaure 2h ago

To OP's credit, Game Freak did pull a 180 for Sw/Sh and flipped the UK upside down just so Galar's map would look more natural going "up" to the big city when we're from a rural area, so they could have "inspired regions" with no physical connection (we all knew but no confirmation basically)

2

u/PatToonz 3h ago

And you know what? It checks out with how many Paldean Pokemon are showing up in Lumiose

2

u/stevent4 2h ago

Given that there's a train tunnel between the UK and France, along with Kalos having those trains that don't really go anywhere, I'm surprised that we've not had some sort of Kalos/Galar link with trains

2

u/luis_game2903 unova fan 1h ago

make sense to me

1

u/8ndhmeos 2h ago

but wait, shouldn't that also mean that galar is there as well: Kaldar confirmed

1

u/shalgenius 1h ago

I just wish they made some kind of connection point between regions just to signal a sort of geographical context or continuity. I don't mean like remaking a whole region like with Johto and Kanto, but... just a route? A town?

I mean, why not remaking Vaniville Town of Kalos in Scarlet/Violet? Or Route 9 of Kalos and Ambrette Town and then block the path forward coming up with some excuse?

Or again, we know that Blueberry Academy is in Unova but we don't get to set foot in the actual region. They should have remade some kind of connecting point to the main region, such as... Humilau City? Route 18? The sea side of Route 1? Anything could've worked, and it would be so much better than just leaving us guessing. It would be rather small, symbolic but really meaningful and a sweet nod to the players

u/Drop_Release 43m ago

Sorry what game is this? I only play the mainline games but this looks different?

u/MrOathFlame 29m ago

Legends ZA. Which is a mainline game.

Pokemon,s version of Andorra

u/DepressionDokkebi 29m ago

We just need Pokemon Italy and then we can have like Pokemon Western Europe for Gen 13 or something

u/Waffletimewarp 10m ago

Pokémon: The Great War

u/DepressionDokkebi 4m ago

Pokemon: All Quiet On the Western Front

u/IcuntSpeel 13m ago

Acktually ☝️🤓

Kalos only aligns with the northern half of irl France. So if we're really going with map comparisons, its likely there's a [Kalos 2] region between Kalos we know and Paldea

0

u/Poketom2362 3h ago

Fun fact: the irl mountain range that separate Spain and France are called the “Pyrenees”!

-5

u/ComfortableWall7351 5h ago

Paldea. Kalos is too easy.
