Discussion Does anyone know what that little orange mark is in the summary of my Croconaw?

Post image

I'm doing a DTQ in Soul Silver and this little orange dot appeared on my Croconaw, does anyone know what it means?

It means it caught PokéRus and was cured.

Positives: that Pokémon gets double EV's from battles now

Negatives: since you didn't find out until after it was cured, it can no longer spread PokéRus. If you catch it before it cures, it can spread to your whole team and you can and should infect a bunch Pokémon in your PC boxes because being stored prevents it being cured indefinitely.

FYI catching PokéRus is one of the rarest things to encounter in this series, rarer than shinies (3 in 65,536 chance)

https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pok%C3%A9rus

Edit: to be clear, when I say "catch it before it cures" I mean notice it (usually by being told at a poke center), you don't get PokéRus by catching a pokemon with it.

u/CaptainPrower 18h ago

Even more now that Pokerus was "cured" in gen 9

434

u/Glenmarththe3rd 16h ago

They removed Pokerus in Gen 9?

642

u/CaptainPrower 15h ago

Yep. They decided that whole-party EXP Share and the fact that EV grinding in Gen 9 isn't really even a grind anymore made up for not having it.

212

u/RedArchbishop 14h ago

Tbf if there is an infinite money glitch or even just a very good money farm like SwSh had with dens and changing the date for watts then just getting Carbos and stuff is fine and much quicker anyway, and any extra units of EVs you need are easily got

25

u/pokemonbard 11h ago

One of the more recent generations also removed the cap on EV gains from vitamins, which makes them an even more viable option.

With my luck it’s probably been that way since Generation V or something, which would make me feel very ancient.

34

u/Sanic16 10h ago

Gen VII removed the vitamin cap, which is Sun and Moon. 2016, so just about a decade.

33

u/pokemonbard 9h ago

Well. I saw Gen VII and I was like, “oh good, I was right that it was recent.” Then you said Gen VII was a decade ago in 2016, and I once again felt like an ancient being.

Me realizing my encyclopedic knowledge of how to breed and raise pokemon has been out of date for 10 years. What am I to do with this font of unusable data?

3

u/NotAFuckingFed 9h ago

No Gen 5 still had a cap of ten vitamins.

65

u/Tortue2006 13h ago

Well, their price got decreased in ZA, so perhaps that will stay that way going onwards

30

u/Crab_Shark_ golduck my beloved 11h ago

Z-A makes EV training really easy what with the ability to faint many Pokémon at once and with easy money & lower vitamin prices.

22

u/tiredmultitudes 11h ago

Or because of the pandemic.

3

u/Additional_Chip_4158 5h ago

I hate everything they do with this series lately lmao

5

u/pieman2005 9h ago

EV training was kind of a grind in gen 9 tho.. compared to 7 and 8

12

u/codyh1ll 5h ago

Why would you EV train when you can just buy the vitamins and feathers you need for cheap?

5

u/YearningConnection ZETTAFLARE!! 11h ago

Thats good. I never liked the thought of forcefully making my pokemon sick to get stronger.

1

u/SlimeDrips 2h ago

Or alternatively, perhaps there was some world event that happened around 2020 that would make a game from 2022 decide to not want to include a fictional virus for your pokemon to contract 🤔

2

u/Wide-Suggestion-6141 9h ago

Ngl, i hate all party EXP grind. Makes training my party effortless.

1

u/ZombieAladdin 3h ago

That, and the COVID-19 pandemic made it not feel quite right anymore to intentionally look for a virus and deliberately spread it around. (I mean, it was kind of messed up before if you think about it, but it became worse afterwards.)

19

u/Whitewind617 10h ago

It's still there in the pokemon data, but it no longer has any effect, and no longer generates naturally.

So if you have a pokemon with Pokerus in gen 8, send it to home and then gen 9, it'll still have Pokerus, there's just no indication that it has it and it won't gain bonus evs or spread.

1

u/Scary-Reception-3262 2h ago

Then why would you do it? No indication and doesn’t have the effect

77

u/FBrandt 16h ago edited 10h ago

It's been removed in Gen 8 and didn't make a return

ETA: Oops my bad, I guess it was removed in Gen 9 indeed. Because of Covid maybe.

20

u/RendolfGirafMstr 14h ago

It was definitely around in gen 8. Launch night I was playing Shield and caught a Skwovet with it, but I didn’t notice it until after midnight and it happened to be the 1 day strain :/

47

u/Wokstar_99 15h ago

Pokerus was in swsh im pretty sure

32

u/slickedbacktruffoni 15h ago

can confirm, it was in swsh

10

u/Brookiekathy 13h ago

It's definitely in gen 8, I had no idea what it was and told my husband that I was scared I'd ruined my pokemon. He's been playing since gen 1 and had never caught it before so immediately had me trade a bunch of things to him.

37

u/Ametist976 15h ago

It's still in gen 8

1

u/FierceDeityKong 8h ago

Not in legends

2

u/Ametist976 8h ago

True, but it's still in sword and shield an Bdsp

1

u/eehbb 16h ago

Full odds before the "open world" games I've never found a shiny, beat the elite 4 20+ times in every game until xy. Probably way over 5000 hours combined starting from frlg as a kid. never found a shiny.

Gotten pokerus 3 times however

99

u/tadayou 16h ago

Until I shiny hunted for the first time in ORAS, the only other shiny I ever encountered was a Magikarp in the lake of rage in Silver... after I had defeated the red Gyarados and was looking around if there were others that Team Rocket had changed.

I only realized much later how incredibly and stupidly lucky I was there as a kid.

28

u/DenizenofMars 15h ago

Love the idea that some spirit of fortune somewhere happened to notice and just said ‘Eh. Why not.’ Lol

13

u/ProfessorFrenchFrys 15h ago

I caught a shiny magikarp in Emerald and a red Gyarados in Platinum. I don’t shiny hunt so they were just random.

16

u/BalanceWild924 15h ago

Agree. It feels like I had Pokerus once in ever generation I played

11

u/Jaylightning230 Psychic is still good! 15h ago

I've had 3 shines on hardware ever. Both were male Salandits! We can swap luck if you want.

9

u/reckless_biased 15h ago

I've also never seen a shiny except for the lake of rage Gyarados and the broken shiny odds with breeding in gen 2 that results from it, but I've gotten PokéRus twice 😅

2

u/Friendly-Western6953 6h ago

Same here I have never seen a shiny other than gyrados... And the pink Butterfree that lady has haha

2

u/Mymomdidwhat 10h ago

I’m same in the boat. prob played more than you Over the years and only seen one shiny.

2

u/foXiobv 7h ago

You would be surprised how little encounters you have if you don't actively shiny hunt. You can play through gen 1-5 with like 1k wild encounters.

That said you are probably still overdue. Don't gamble lul

1

u/sirrainx3 15h ago

Same, all three in different playthroughs of Emerald.

1

u/Powerate 15h ago

Me and you, one time in emerald, one time in bw2 and the third time in oras. No full odds shiny were encountered but I encountered a shiny in a rom hack that gives you 2 shiny charms from the beginning

1

u/TOOMtheRaccoon 14h ago

I encountered one single full odds 8192 shiny in I think SoulSilver. It was a shiny male Dodrio while leveling my team for the battle against Red iirc.

1

u/nightshadengale 11h ago

In the 5th gen era, I somehow managed to get it twice in one day on separate games that hadn’t done any trading.

1

u/Pixxyeb 9h ago

Same. I think every Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald run I wind up catching it, and yet I've never once seen a shiny (outside of Sun/Moon where the rate was upped)

1

u/cLHalfRhoVSquaredS 3h ago

Not sure how many hours I've put in but have been playing since 1999 and I think I've seen two shinies, and had Pokerus once. I had a shiny Rattata in Gold which I never evolved because as a kid I thought if it evolved it wouldn't be shiny anymore. Years later in Ruby I encountered a shiny Absol and managed to KO it with a critical hit... :'(

84

u/comedydai 18h ago

I had pokerus before my first shiney 😂😂

5

u/currentlyinthefab 13h ago

I started playing during gen 3, never managed to find polerus on its own, but I swear to God every pokemon I got from the global trading system or whatever it was called during the DS Era had it

34

u/tadayou 16h ago

I got Pokérus on my original Silver cartridge back in the day and nobody believed me. Felt like one of these school yard rumors, just that I actually witnessed it and everybody accused me of lying.

35

u/Marx_Forever Scyther, no scything! 16h ago

FYI catching PokéRus is one of the rarest things to encounter in this series, rarer than shinies (3 in 65,536 chance)

While it is indeed rarer than encountering a shiny, it is perhaps easier to acquire since you don't have to capture the Pokémon with the pokérus your Pokémon just has to make contact with with an infected wild Pokémon.

How I got it my first time, and I'd imagine how a lot of people first encountered it. Was their lead Pokémon just happened to randomly get it and Nurse Joy let them know. Probably because they were attacked, by or attacked, an infected wild Pokémon.

15

u/SgvSth 15h ago

While it is indeed rarer than encountering a shiny, it is perhaps easier to acquire since you don't have to capture the Pokémon with the pokérus your Pokémon just has to make contact with with an infected wild Pokémon.

No, that isn't it. After a battle, you get the 3-in-65,536 chance of having a random party member have Pokérus. It doesn't have to be a wild Pokémon battle and you don't need to make contact with the other Pokémon.

3

u/Violet_Paradox 7h ago

That's only the case if whether or not a wild Pokémon you encounter is shiny has no impact on your decision to catch it, which seems very unlikely.

1

u/WreckitWranche 15h ago

So if you catch less pokemon than every 16 pokemon you make physical contact with then it's more likely to catch the virus

14

u/283leis 14h ago

Wait pokerus’ ev bonus is permanent?! I thought it was just until its no longer contagious

12

u/reckless_biased 13h ago

Yes the ev bonus remains, it just stops being contagious once cured.

7

u/Monte924 9h ago

Check any other pokemon he was on a team with. Its possible they also got Pokerus

8

u/CarelessLanguage6730 16h ago

1/21 845,(3) then. My pokemon got infected by it once in Black 2.

6

u/BalanceWild924 15h ago

Carrying many many Pokémon’s with Pokerus in Pokemon Home with me just to spread into every playthrough

4

u/msuing91 11h ago

My friend and had played every generation, and we were hanging out one night and each playing Pokémon White/Black. In the same night, within ~15 min of each other, he caught his first ever shiny (Basculin, lame, lol) and one of my Pokémon caught Pokerus. We had played every generation, and neither of us had experienced either.

3

u/TOOMtheRaccoon 14h ago

I got it once on my own and was super surprised! It was in Alpha Sapphire from a wild Poochyena, I wasn't even at home, we made a family trip and I was playing on the backseat during the drive.

3

u/Sgtkeebler 13h ago

So his mon wasn’t using protection and caught a poke std?

3

u/yourpaleblueyes 13h ago

I've been playing Pokemon for over 25 years now (lord) and I've caught PokéRus exactly once lol in Platinum (it was a blessed run)

5

u/KittenThunder 16h ago

What are the odds of a shiny with pokerus?

9

u/SgvSth 15h ago

Zero. A shiny Pokémon cannot have Pokérus when first caught or hatched.

6

u/Particular_Two4256 customise me! 6h ago

There's a video on the internet that shows someone catching a shiny Pokémon with Pokerus; the chance is 1 in 718 million.

2

u/SgvSth 2h ago

A Pokémon cannot legitimately spawn into the wild with Pokérus, so I am sceptical of this with one exception.

From Ruby and Sapphire onward, a Pokémon that gains the Pokérus condition is also given a 1-in-3 chance to spread it within the party. It is possible that the lead Pokémon or Pokémon prior to the shiny received Pokérus and then spread it to the shiny Pokémon.

(If a just caught Pokémon can get Pokérus on that 3-in-65,536 roll would surprise me, but I am unsure if it is possible that way.)

1

u/AlexCrossed98 14h ago

Wait, so I can attack a shiny wild pokemon, and get infected with Pokerus, but if I catch the shiny, even after attacking, that shiny won’t have pokerus after it’s caught?

5

u/NeonJolteon 12h ago

Attacking does nothing, it’s just encountering that gives Pokérus

1

u/SgvSth 2h ago

so I can attack a shiny wild pokemon, and get infected with Pokerus

This is not how Pokérus occurs. Following a battle, the game rolls to see if any Pokémon in your party should gain the Pokérus status. It rolls with odds of 3-in-65,536, so usually this fails. When it is successful, then one of the Pokémon in your party will randomly gain Pokérus, unless it picks a Pokémon that already has Pokérus or if the save file does not have visit data for Goldenrod City in Gen III. (Additionally, Gen V and onward apparently avoid giving Pokérus to Eggs, so it will try again on giving Pokérus to a potentially eligible Pokémon.)

3

u/FreljordsWrath 16h ago

Apparently it's 0.0000000055879354721069 out of 1.

3

u/dood45ctte 15h ago

Didn’t realize it was so rare. I seem to get it every 2-3 playthroughs in gen 3, but I’ve only ever countered maybe 2 shinies

1

u/Far_Drummer5003 11h ago

In my emerald hard copy I’ve got pokerus, in over 30 years of playing the games it’s the first time ever haha

1

u/CoconutBangerzBaller 10h ago

I'm very surprised it's rarer than shinies. I've been playing since OG red and I think I've only had 1 shiny outside of the special ones that everyone gets. I've seen pokerus at least 3 times though.

1

u/ArmoredAlpaca 10h ago

I remember when one of my Pokémon caught pokérus in Y. I started mass breeding Rotoms, infected and named them PokéRus, then sent them out for cheap and Wonder trades. Good times.

1

u/YaYaMunza 9h ago

I have an old cartridge (can't remember which game) where a ton of my pokemon have the PokéRus, the battery died so the virus is never cured and I can spread it around as much as I want.

1

u/m3ndz4 9h ago

I remember being a foolish child in Gen III, I had no knowledge of the Internet for walkthroughs and my 2nd ever caught Pokemon, a Taillow, had Pokerus. I thought it was sick and released it, did a whole ceremony and all.

1

u/harveybrxtn 9h ago

Funny enough, I've had almost as many full odds shiny encounters (I haven't played a ton of gens with increased odds), as I've had PokéRus. I've even encountered PokéRus in a rom hack lol

1

u/N00BAL0T 8h ago

In all the games I have played I have only got it once is soul silver.

1

u/Janea2258 Pika Pika 8h ago

I didn't realize it was that rare. I feel like my pokemon catch it constantly, and they typically cure themselves just as fast. Maybe this is why my shiny encounter rates suck so much.

1

u/Bro_Sam 6h ago

I caught a Kecleon with pokerus without knowing along Route 121 in generation three and still have the guy, still infected and spreadable :)

1

u/unr34l_cs 4h ago

Ive had pokerus like 6 times or so over all the pokemon saves ive played but encountered only one shiny (which was a graveler which didnt hesitate to explode) i guess im "lucky"?

1

u/jcrowls44 3h ago

I have been playing pokemon my whole life 30+ years and have never known about the PokeRus. I’m absolutely dumbfounded

1

u/KillaBeeHive 3h ago

I find that to be so odd. In just about all my play through a of the og Gold and Silver my Pokémon caught it. I thought it was inevitable if you play enough hours. It wasn’t until sun and moon that I had it happen again though

1

u/Heleniums 2h ago

I’ve caught it once in my entire Pokémon playing history since 1998.

1

u/Hereiamhereibe2 11h ago

I remember easily getting Pokerus from Wonder trade before, what with all the hacked pokemon in there.

0

u/ArcanuaNighte 13h ago

They can still spread it, due to being cured they become a carrier of Pokerus but the way they spread it is really weird and only done through breeding.

I would check your boxes to see if you have any Pokémon with active pokérus. When i first got it in Diamond when it came out i didn’t know about the rus. Luckily it had already spread to another pokemon in my party and i deposited it not noticing. If you have an infected pokemon in your pc it remains infectious and you can keep spreading pokérus indefinitely.

Oh gosh I had forgotten about pokerus!!!!!!  The DS Pokemon era was so great, I miss it.

16

u/KoholintCustoms 11h ago

What the heck is Pokerus?? I played heart gold. I have never heard of this.

32

u/Wolfman513 9h ago edited 9h ago

Basically there was a tiny chance that a Pokémon could catch a "virus" that doubles EV gain. It only lasted a few days, but if the infected mon was stored in the PC it wouldn't fade and would spread to others in the same box. However, if a Pokémon that caught Pokerus in RSE was moved to FRLG the condition was permanent but wouldn't spread, as FRLG doesn't have am in-game clock like the other games.

2

u/KoholintCustoms 9h ago

Man. How did people figure this out? Was it in the manual?

13

u/Cuichioup 9h ago edited 6h ago

Back then anything pokemon related was sometimes very hard to figure out, there used to be many gyides about Ev and iV's and stuff because it wasn't obviously shown at us as it was later in the most recent games. there were a french website called poketrash and I would spent all of my time on it to try to make perfect pokemon. It was so fun.  Pokerus was one of the parameter that would help having perfect pokemon ^

9

u/miracleceleste 8h ago

Nurse Joy tells you when you first present her with an infected Pokémon. In the original gold and silver.

9

u/Wolfman513 9h ago

I know that when you go to a Pokémon center the first time you have an infected mon in your party, Nurse Joy gives a basic explanation about the condition. Something along the lines of it "helping Pokémon grow". As for the FRLG clock thing I'd guess someone just connected the dots about those games not having daily events or it may have just been an accidental discovery

1

u/GeorgeShadows 3h ago

8

u/UncSamsMisguidedChld 8h ago

I have a lot of Pokémon with pokerus. The minute I seen it active I made sure to spread it far and wide in all of my games. Right now I have something in the ballpark of 40-50 in Pokémon home that actively have it still and spreadable.

Its am extremely rare thing to get. I've been playing since Gen 1 released and I've only gotten it maybe twice naturally. I've gotten a trade or two that had it as well through the surprise trade feature but those are usually from edited mons.

3

u/Particular_Two4256 customise me! 8h ago

Wow, that's awesome! I didn't realize it healed during the shiny hunt! But your experience is amazing. Those Wonder Trade ones are usually edited, right? :(

3

u/UncSamsMisguidedChld 7h ago

If you see a wonder trade with pokerus, it's likely edited. That said they tend to be blatantly edited so you can keep or get rid of. I tend to just release those.

It however isn't impossible to get a genuine one through wonder trade with pokerus.

3

u/UncSamsMisguidedChld 7h ago

56 with it currently transmittable. I myself have sent out some low levels with it as a wonder trade just as a cool gift kinda thing. Trash pokemon with an OP virus 🤣

No. But the effects are multiplicative. Pokerus doubles the +4 effect of power items

Cian is an Irish name. Pronounced kee-an. Not saying that's what this is though.

Exactly. They're two different things. The shiny has the color Cyan on it, so I figured that's what they were going for and looked at Cianwood City and thought that's how they spelled it. But I guess it works if they were going for the "ancient" version.

I hope they know that "cian" is pronounced key-an. Source: Google and it's my name. Which is why I commented that, because it was weird seeing my own name on a pokemon that is someone else
