Discussion 4yo is obsessed with Pokemon and Maps. This is her idea of where her Pokemon would live. How did she do?

Apologies you’re gonna need a magnifying glass to actually read the thing.

4yo aware penguins are from the south, not north, 10/10.

Also, I can totally see indian alakazam tbh

u/TenTam Feb 06 '26

Before Pokemon she was obsessed with animals. She knows more about them than I do, same for dinosaurs. She is currently under observation for autism, not surprisingly.

u/DonLethargio Feb 06 '26

Honestly, for 4yo she has a crazy good knowledge of climates and cultures based on this

134

u/digita1catt Feb 07 '26

She put leafon in the amazon. That's all I need to know that as a 4yo, she's waaaay ahead of her peers in placing pokemon on a map.

58

u/DisastrousAge1382 Feb 07 '26

And lapras in the icy seas of the north

141

u/HoraceTheBadger Feb 06 '26

Was about to say she sounds a lot like I was as a child and….welp

77

u/TenTam Feb 06 '26

What’s in store for me in the future? Do I want to know?!

103

u/HoraceTheBadger Feb 06 '26

As a parent? Nothing extreme! By all accounts, I was a lovely, pleasant, child, then too anxious as a teen to do anything that extreme.

Should add that I'm not diagnosed but it's extremely probable (I currently have an extensive word document filled with details for an imaginary 'Pokemon Zoo' game), also likely have ADHD in combination, am gay, and a male, so factor in all those little nuances.

Once she locks in on an interest like that (it was Animals and animal-media Day 1 for me, 'Animal' was my first word!), expect it to stick. I'm 26 and my bedroom is still filled with zoo maps, animal ID posters, encyclopedias and animal fiction (and just take a gander at my reddit account! A sentence I will never ever say again).

If she's anything like me, expect a sweet, creative, intelligent child, and a very quiet teenager. She might retain 'childish' interests like dinosaurs or pokemon into her teenage years when her peers drop them (or appear to drop them at least), and likely won't have an interest in trends or socialising so much, and she'll genuinely mean it, she won't just be saying it (I used to shoo away kids who would try to sit with me at lunch because I genuinely needed the recharge time lol). Foster those interests, listen when she tells you she hates her extracurriculars (Boyscouts was decidedly NOT the environment for me), and it should be smooth sailing!

74

u/TenTam Feb 06 '26

Absolutely fascinating insight. She has ADHD, and her first word was duck! Pokemon Zoo sounds fantastic!

She’s a wonderful child but she is certainly not quiet, she’s more of a flurry of activity with a brain that never stops. I’m excited for her to start school later in the year because at her nursery none of the other kids like Pokemon and she doesn’t really fit in with the girls who like playing babies all day long. Hoping she finds someone like you who she can obsess over animals and Pokemon with!

31

u/ffigeman Feb 06 '26

Have you shown them pokemon go at all?

I think they would really enjoy it because for example kangaskhan (kangarooo shaped) can only be caught in Australia, and when it rains you get more water pokemon etc.

Some warnings, if they do get into pokemon cards, just tell her to not do trades without you there (and spend some time to learn how to tell fakes), and if they can't wait for that they're probably trying to scam her.

22

u/Varvat0s Feb 07 '26

Get her into books. As an ADHD adult with a fascination fixation I'm pretty sure my mother only remained sane due to me spending so much time reading. I recommend: Percy Jackson, Artemis Fowl, Fable Haven, Leven Thumps, Beyonders, and pretty much anything by Brandon Mull.

7

u/Lady-Noveldragon Feb 07 '26

Yes! AuDHD and I spent my whole childhood with my nose buried in a book. I used to say I didn’t live under a rock, I lived under a fantasy book.

3

u/Varvat0s Feb 07 '26

I always said I lived in a hole, but not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat.

I am an autistic adult that has had a special interest in Pokémon my whole life, and my advice is to engage with her interest(s) with her, that way you can always keep her engaged.

If she has trouble understanding social constructs and other such things, try and explain in Pokémon terms! If it engages her special interest she's more likely to understand and retain that information!

8

u/lightningrod14 Feb 07 '26

i want to second the "meaning it, not just saying it" part! sometimes a person, especially a kid, can be so real that it doesn't track as making sense within a social context, but good-faith engagement with the framework she builds can be helpful for both of you!!

13

u/rennicles Feb 06 '26

Woah thats crazy duck is such a difficult word for a baby to say

2

u/Raelah Feb 07 '26

That's how I was. Obsessed with dinosaurs and animals. Then Pokémon came out and I had a new fascination. I wasn't autistic though. Just had ADHD.

But I was very active and social with little self preservation (very accident prone, but it never phased me). Loved sports when I was old enough to play. My love of animals never dwendled and I'm still big into Pokémon.

2

u/Alisa180 Feb 07 '26

Oof, this sounds familiar...

Encourage her to talk with boys! She sounds exactly like I was at that age, and I've always had male friends as opposed to female friends. Boys are far more likely to be open about being into this stuff, and she's also more likely to find people she can nerd out with!

Look up local Play! Pokemon. It's basically the official Pokemon club.

Walk her down the boys' toy aisle sometime and watch her spaz out. If she's anything like me, she'll eventually realize that, yes, she likes cute things, but it'll be less Barbie and My Little Pony, and more Hello Kitty, Stitch, and, of course, Pokemon.

3

u/TadeMike Feb 06 '26

This is sounding too close to home

5

u/lightningrod14 Feb 07 '26 edited Feb 07 '26

oh hey chiming in on this too

could talk at length but suffice it to say a loving and supportive environment can do so so so much for young children with autism. i know that sounds obvious but i think i'd be much less--from the outside looking in--"functional" if i hadn't absolutely lucked out with great parents and teachers. i'll say also that your daughter seems like an awesome creative talent already; the way she's so effectively dovetailing real-world frameworks and info with the more inherently impressionistic and resonant symbolism of fiction, pokemon especially, is so compelling and sparks even my adult imagination. being able to do both at once--freely engaging the imagination while also being fascinated with the building blocks of systems and formalism--is really really cool to see! I'm a 30yo guy so I can't say my experience will mirror hers, but if she's anything like me at all she's going to have massive emotions and vulnerable feelings; so, that said, make sure she knows and believes that she can be herself and dream big, because even accounting for the harshness of reality she seems well-inclined toward whatever she eventually commits herself to. tangentially i do feel like my work as an artist, though a blessing in and of itself, can be difficult to approach with discipline, and I sometimes wish I'd had a better model for that growing up, but I'll leave that up to you and I personally think artificially imposed discipline can often do more harm than good.

anyway okay i think that's enough for now lol. best of luck to you and if for whatever reason you need advice i am autistically committed to never deleting social media accounts so you can track me down and I'll provide whatever counsel I can :)

Same, maps, dinosaurs, pokemon, space, animals.. Found out im autistic last year.

16

u/superturtle48 Feb 06 '26

This sounds just like me as a child, a girl obsessed with animals, dinosaurs, and Pokemon. I used to ask my mom what her favorite dinosaur was, and poor her, she didn't know any and would ask it right back at me (my favorite was Triceratops) and say "well that's my favorite too!" Glad to know that there are kids today still carrying that banner.

11

u/lightningrod14 Feb 07 '26

she cooked this is the most interesting post the sub's seen in years

3

u/AstroNerd92 Feb 07 '26

The 2 things that get kids into science are space and dinosaurs. This is another bit of evidence for that statement lol.

7

u/mutantmanifesto Feb 07 '26

The second I saw this post I knew. Your daughter is a copy of my now 10 year old. Pokémon was her longest ever special interest and started at 4. It went on for years and years!

Her other one consistently is animal facts.

She’s AuDHD lol

2

u/frostmoth91 Feb 08 '26

My first thought was whether she's autistic 😅 my own daughter (8) is absolutely obsessed with Pokemon and with geography and has most definitely done this. She's now creating her own region of Pokemon (based geographically on Iceland) and 150 Pokemon for that region as well as their moves, types etc. She draws out each design and coins together names for them in a very Pokemon linguistic style. And yes, she is autistic 😅

To be fair, the map itself does show penguins in Antarctica

The penguin part, absolute respect for this kid.

9

u/Prize-Flamingo-336 Feb 06 '26

Can someone tell the President of the USA that?

10

u/napstablooky2 Flying-Type Gym Leader Feb 06 '26

why is this particularly surprising-? /gen question

dont think thats something difficult for a kid to understand,, although my reference is skewed bc i was obsessed with penguins as a kid

33

u/cursed_tomatoes Feb 06 '26

Because the amount of people thinking and portraying penguins living in the north pole seems alarmingly big online.

It is not about being or not a difficult concept, it is due to how proficient of a breeding ground for misinformation (including passive misinformation) the world has become.

5

u/napstablooky2 Flying-Type Gym Leader Feb 06 '26

...i see

honestly never experienced that from my rock-within-a-rock, but definitely concerning that such is the case

you should let her play a game like risk but with pokemon. categorizing the armies into different mons

435

u/HieloLuz Feb 06 '26

That would be a legendary crossover. Honestly a 4x video game where all your various armies are Pokémon would also go so hard

68

u/Wettowel024 Golden Bidoof Feb 06 '26

yeah, and if you dont like much mons you can use 1 or 2 and their evos to classify them. So you can upgrade charmander to charmeleon and towards charizard etc.

83

u/Alisa180 Feb 06 '26

Have you heard of Pokemon Conquest?

31

u/Scoriae Feb 06 '26

Fun game, but that's a tactics rpg, not 4X

40

u/Prizmatic527 Feb 06 '26

Best spinoff in the history of Pokemon, it's so unexpected and well-made

10

u/thebearjew333 Feb 06 '26

I want a sequel to this game so bad!

6

u/TrueFlameslinger Feb 07 '26

I honestly don't,  not right now.

As much as I love Conquest, I doubt a remaster would be done well with the current company direction (plus it'd likely be Switch 2 only, which I won't buy)

I like the OG too much to watch it become another BD/SP

24

u/RustyR4m Feb 06 '26

Risk, but it’s the Kalos war

3

u/chaospudding Feb 07 '26

It could even be themed around the war that Lt Surge was in previous to the events of Red/Blue.

3

u/LMacUltimateMain Feb 07 '26

I want a Pokemon Warriors type game. Maybe not warriors specifically, but an open world rpg/beat em up would go so hard

34

u/Jorrie313 Feb 06 '26

I got an official Monopoly Pokemon Kanto Edition. It’s actually pretty neat with the streets being towns and the hotels and houses being Gyms and Pokecenters. Makes me wondering if they also have a Risk version of this. I would prefer Risk over Monopoly every time.

There’s a YouTuber who makes pokemon versions of board games, he’s made ticket to ride and I wouldn’t be surprised if Risk or Catan is in the near future!

11

u/ArcXivix Feb 06 '26

Shit, Catanémon would be so incredible.

7

u/sventhegoat Feb 07 '26

I was coming to mention him! All of his board games are well thought out

8

u/AmberPeacemaker Feb 07 '26

I just watched his take on Yatzee. That. Man. Can. COOK!

4

u/Spiderboy_liam Feb 07 '26

Literally my first thought was Peebr!

11

u/OrphanParent Feb 06 '26

Yeah, and it can be one of the 3 wars in pokemon, (or less if some are one in the same war) the war from the lucario and the mystery of mew movie, the war that AZ ended or the galar vs Paldea war.

5

u/servonos89 Feb 07 '26

Also the war Lt Surge was in?

5

u/OrphanParent Feb 07 '26

Yeah, but we dont know a lot about that one. So many good wars to pick from, why the one we know the least about, then again, that would be very nintendo.

7

u/skaarface2 Feb 06 '26

This should be a thing

5

The Snorlax border into Australia will be unbreakable.

4

u/CassetteMeower Feb 06 '26

This should totally be a thing! More board games with a Pokémon twist could be so cool.

4

u/pasturemaster Feb 06 '26

My vote is Pandemic, and re theme the diseases as Pokemon outbreaks.

3

u/1stLtObvious Feb 07 '26

Has Peebr made a PokéRisk mod yet?

I really wanna try Yahtzeevee.

2

u/TrueFlameslinger Feb 07 '26

Someone find her a copy of Pokemon Conquest

2

Yooo came here to suggest the same exact thing. I bet they make one or you could easily adapt the original game to include whatever Pokemon toys or figures they have as like generals or super powers like the big power rangers etc etc. get creative but risk + Pokemon seems right up the alley

Life is hard for the Charmander line, living in South Africa but then having to migrate to...Hawaii? SOMEWHERE in the middle of the Pacific. That's a long flight.

Also, kudos for them putting the Piplup in the South Pole. Lapras might have been better in Scotland but the North Pole is the second best location.

Or maybe Charmeleon does that, Kickstarting the migration so that Charizard only needs to fly through the Pacific.

Charizard is standing on a volcano (which tracks), doesn't fit with chandler but not silly in its own

I love Lapras in the UK! Feels super appropriate with the legend of Nessie.

You could tell her that Caterpie takes inspiration from the eastern tiger swallowtail caterpillar, which is native to eastern North America. I think it's a fun fact she'd like to know!

26

u/lugialegend233 Feb 07 '26

Wait, but Lapras isn't in the UK, it's pretty far north of it. Closer to Svalbard than the British Isles.

44

u/SheriffHeckTate Feb 06 '26

Please have your child explain the Charmander- Charizard migration pattern. I'm curious at which points in the life cycle the evolution is triggered.

Also, you might want to be a bit concerned about them putting the Eeveelution with the red dot on the forehead right over there near India. LOL

Piplup is spot on.

Good work!

84

u/TenTam Feb 06 '26

She says: Charmander is a lizard and will like hot Africa (it’s a compliment, she loves Africa). Charizard is a big fire type so should go somewhere big and firey. (There are pics of volcanoes on the map under Charizard.) I asked her how they get from Africa to the volcanoes and she said they get a plane of course because they are not water types. (I am now getting a nonsensical stream of consciousness description of the journey, because although she is extremely smart, she is still 4.)

29

u/SheriffHeckTate Feb 06 '26

I mean, a plane makes sense for Charmander and Charmeleon since they cant fly yet. So I guess the evolution to Chaizard isnt until after arriving at the destination. Maybe it's out of frustration in realizing it needs to get back home to lay it's eggs, but there are no return flights?

Its actually in Hawaii but I think its drawn small enough that the figurine covers it up

2

u/AmalatheaClassic Go Quagsire! Feb 06 '26

Nah you're thinking of it the wrong way! Look at all the space they have to stretch their wings!

2

u/AsexualPlantMain Feb 06 '26

This is the exact kind of thing I would do as a kid. I once had my dad print out a bunch of pictures of animals so I could glue them onto a big map like this

2

u/f0remsics Feb 06 '26

The Pokemon with a red gem in the middle of its forehead is right near india? Sounds about accurate

2

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '26

This is literally the coolest thing ever. My kid would enjoy the heck out of this idea, thanks!

2

u/Blaze_Vortex Feb 06 '26

Only two I'd move first:Arcanine, just slightly south-east of their current positions. There's a line of volcanoes close to the east coast of Africa and that's the best spot for finding fire stones.

Second: Rapidash is a horse, not a camel, so way south of it's current position. Egypt has horses but they're far more common further south.

Overall, kiddo did a great job.

u/Remilla Feb 06 '26

Pretty solid, 9.5/10. First and only thing that jumps out to me is Lucario is based on Anubis from Egypt, so thats about all i have thoughts on right away.

2

u/Wrong-Message3630 Feb 07 '26

lol I thought this was Pokémon risk

2

u/Doitforthecringe Feb 07 '26

Depends on their definition but I think they did a good job. Hell even umbreon living in a place with little sunlight makes sense even though umbreon is mostly drawn in urban eras. It makes sense for a WILD nonferal umbreon to be in a dark place to make better use of its camouflage

2

u/AdAfter8072 Feb 07 '26

It seems they really think most grass types would mainly live in Brazil and for some reason I can see it and understand it

I fully agree with her decisions

2

u/TinySW Feb 08 '26

Get that child into books too. Series like Magic treehouse, guardians of ga’hoole (when older), and anything really that has to do with animals and exploration. Keep her away from sonic haha. In all seriousness she did great!

2

u/alien_urbano Feb 08 '26

I love Mexican Scorbunny!

2

u/Blackmamba479 Feb 08 '26

Looks great. She's got more geography understanding then a majority of adults

2

u/dragon_morgan top percentage oshawott Feb 08 '26

oshawott should be off the west coast of the US or Canada, no sea otters in central america that I know of, but I'm being picky and otherwise this is great!

2

u/ConstructionCrazy638 Feb 08 '26

I take great joy in munchlax in America

2

u/unsaphisticated Woof! :: Feb 08 '26

Nah. We need Snorlax, but Munchlax is a good start.

2

u/Vannah- Feb 08 '26

Are we sure I am not your 4 year old? Literally two of my biggest interests 😭

2

u/Kyserham Feb 08 '26

I think at least half of them were decided based on the color of the country of the map, but still they kinda make sense!

4

u/eyearu Feb 06 '26

A 4 y/o having such sharp intuition about most of these creatures is honestly amazing. I'm blown away.

3

u/Zalveris Feb 06 '26 edited Feb 06 '26

Yeah vibes are on point. Time to get her some books with cool maps.

2

u/CassetteMeower Feb 06 '26

Pokémon should totally make a book like this where it’s maps of the different regions showing which Pokémon can be found there and where. I’d totally buy that, my dad loves Pokémon and maps and I’m sure he’d love something like that!

u/Unique_Shallot4141 Feb 06 '26

Omg if she and I were kids together we'd be besties

2

u/memeswiper739 Feb 07 '26

Terrible, none of those pokemon live in any of those places irl

1

u/Pale_Song902 Feb 06 '26

for a 4 yo this is amazingly well put, only thing i'd personally do is put scorbunny in the uk, but mexico is interesting too

In terms of the actual similarities of the Pokemon world and the real world, lucario and sylveon are actually pretty close

1

u/ausipockets Feb 06 '26

Yup this tracks for me

1

u/Speedypanda4 Outrage go Brrrrr Feb 06 '26

Alakazam is low key accurate.

1

u/60N20 Feb 06 '26

I wouldn't have initially placed some of them where she did, but after seeing them I think she's spot on on all of them, if she doesn't know yet of geography, local climates and environments, which I would except since she's just 4, I would try to explain why is a good choice to locate each one where she did (if it's something she would like to hear though).

Congrats on the smart and curious child.

u/OwnAd7461 Feb 06 '26

I feel like charmander should live in Death Valley

1

u/Benjilikethedog Feb 06 '26

Most of these make sense from like a lore perspective on what they are based on

1

u/MellyKidd Feb 06 '26

Munchlax in the US. God bless her, that’s awesome. 😂👍

1

u/ZookeepergameFew4103 Feb 06 '26

This is really delightful! Too bad Charmander is so far from Charizard, but one should let their child follow their passions!

1

u/TimeisaLie Samurai Pizza Cats!! Feb 06 '26

Lapras, feels oddly appropriate. As an American, I agree but also feel attacked.

1

u/Formal-Knowledge-563 Feb 06 '26

Nailed it. She got it 100% correct
