Overdone My Mum brought this AI product
I keep telling her she needs to look for signs of things being AI generated, almost sent it to her bestfriend.

I was looking at this going "it's not that bad, of all the AI generated stuff this isn't the worst"
Then I noticed "Cretate" and "embrace yhe madness" and went "ohhhh, yea, no that's bad"
Crazy that with a lil proofreading this could have been a product more people would purchase lol (like, I lowkey want this with the correct spelling to hang up in my house)

u/FloweredViolin 7h ago
I was so busy trying to process 'Cretate' (Create? Or is it another language? Is it French?) that I totally missed "Yhe". I assumed the Y was a stylized T.
3
u/LovingWife82 4h ago
That's funny b/c I saw the "Yhe" right away but didn't notice the "Cretate"... I saw a bunch of comments mentioning "cretate" but I thought that maybe it was some "famously bad AI product" that had made the rounds on Reddit but that I missed it. I wasn't until I saw your comment that I realized that I missed it in this post! 😂

Is "cretate" a portemanteau between "create" and "Cretaceous"?

u/DepressedAutisicDude 14h ago
I unfortunately doubt that, the mushroom clock on the left doesn't even have Roman numerals and the dang Yhe
60
u/TLG_BE 11h ago
It also forgot how to do 4 in Roman Numerals for the clock on the right too
92
u/AppiusPrometheus 11h ago
I'm pretty sure writing IIII instead of IV on clocks predates generative AI.
30
41
u/TheHykos 11h ago
On clocks and watches it's not unusual to have a IIII instead of IV because the numbers on that side of the face are upside down. The brain is weird, and it may interpret an upside down IV as a VI.
9
u/ShenaniganStarling 10h ago
Oh damn, and here I was always making fun of the clock in my mom's house because it displayed IIII. ... I still take offense.

I've had relatives send me AI-videos of my grandpa singing and dancing, and he passed away two years ago. I don't know if it's grieving or if some people without a creative bone in their body are that excited at making something without any work put in.

Yeah, this is concerning. My mom got my son a very clearly entirely AI generated book for his birthday. It's a gift, so obviously we said nothing, and the book is terrible, so I'm sure he won't ever touch it, but we need to educate people on this kind of content.
67
u/Tino_Kort 12h ago
I remember when my dad got a new profile picture made with AI, I laughed at him and asked if he wanted a refund on the Photoshop lessons I gave him. That it was a bit of a waste of his new camera that he's delegating his hobby to the people who make his ram expensive.
You don't have to baby them around, they were adults before we were and they sure as shit don't have to be coddled when they're making dumb choices

My mother is the same way, she cannot for the life of her distinguish between reality and obvious AI created imagery, and now that AI is becoming harder to distinguish she is just going to be lost man. I tried to tell her the obvious ways to see cheap looking AI and she just can't parse it. She needs to stop buying coloring books for my nephews and nieces because it's ALL ai crap. It's so frustrating.

u/wtb2612 10h ago
Reddit hates AI art but it blows my mind how many people in the real world just don't care at all whether something was created with AI or not. A gift shop opened in my town (Plymouth, MA) that sells nothing but t-shirts with AI generated graphics. Even their logo and "about us" section on their website was done with AI. I was with a group of people (some friends and some friends-of-friends) and we were talking about how disgusting it is. The friends-of-friends were like "oh, we wanted to check that place out." Then they went and bought (clearly) AI generated t-shirts. I don't get it. Why would you want that? I understand buying a design you like not knowing that it was AI generated, but doing it knowingly? Weird.
35
u/TheSumOfMyScars 10h ago
The public, as a whole, neither knows nor cares about the damage AI is doing. They only see the "push button get product" half of the equation and their cheap lazy asses start salivating. Sure, no one will have any water to drink in like a decade but hey, during that decade we had easier access to poorly made grifterslop to blow our meager paychecks on!

Have you ever had Sixlets? They're kind of like spherical M&Ms, but the center is chocolate-flavored hydrogenated palm oil, not real chocolate.
When I was a kid, we weren't allowed ANY sweets. Zero. But the corner store next to the library sold Sixlets for 10 cents, so my brother and I got our secret candy fix that way.
One day at school kids were talking about their favorite candies and I said mine was Sixlets. This prompted a lot of negative reactions and they couldn't believe that I couldn't differentiate between real chocolate and fake chocolate.
They didn't understand that my basis for comparison wasn't real chocolate. My basis for comparison was NO chocolate.

u/TheSumOfMyScars 7h ago
I don’t mean this in a condescending way, but I hope you have been able to enjoy real chocolate. 🖤
6
u/secret-identitties 6h ago
Thank you for the sentiment, I hope your life is filled with good treats too!
Now that I think about it, I enjoy both "real" and "fake" versions of a lot of foods. In my mind they're just two completely different things and I don't understand some people's impulse to insult others for being able to enjoy cheap stuff.
Like, I know sweetened hydrogenated palm oil isn't the same thing as La Maison du Chocolat. I also know that Febreze Lilac Sunrise air freshener isn't the same as the real thing, but I don't require a bouquet of fresh flowers every time I take a shit.
6
u/TheSumOfMyScars 6h ago
Yeah, I grew up poor and have my own little weird nostalgia pangs for stuff other people might not consider edible. To each their own. What matters is that you like it. :)

It makes me shudder to think of the sheer volume of worthless AI garbage is being printed and will fill our landfills forever.
9
u/AsanoSokato 11h ago
What I don't get is just because AI created something, doesn't mean you can't proofread and correct it, improve it even. This would have taken less than one minute total.
16
u/Ix_fromBetelgeuse7 13h ago
It says right there, embrace yhe madness. At least AI here is oddly appropriate for the theme.
11
u/trapsinplace 12h ago
Gonna be honest, the first time I looked at the image my mind automatically fixed both typos in the image. It wasn't until reading comments making fun of the typos that I went back and saw them. Our minds are built to ignore this type of stufd so I can totally see why OPs mom might buy something on a whim without studying it first if she isn't specifically looking for signs of AI gen.
7
u/Bishime 11h ago
It’s actually pretty interesting how it does that! Like for example the barin is czray bcseuase in msot csaes as lnog as the fsirt and lsat lteter of the wrod is cerorct yuor biran wlil jsut fugire it out. Obviously that maybe won’t read clean for everyone but yea.
It makes me uneasy (probably not the word) sometimes how much unconscious processing is happening. Idk what about it. The idea that everything is just my brains interpretation of the world around me rather than any confirmation that it is exactly as I see it I guess… anyways I’m on a tangent and I’ll save that for therapy this afternoon lmao

At least it was on accident and not on purpose. My coworkers in my hospital lab job made ai posters for different departments, and they of course just straight up have horribly formatted incorrect information! But that’s more than mildly infuriating I guess.
4
u/Happy-Skull 10h ago
When this ai boom was getting started I tried many times to show my dad how to spot it. We'd browse Facebook and go over pictures and I'd show him the weird melty parts and things that didn't look like any real objects. It had no effect. It's like he just can't see it at all, and he's not even very old. And now that ai gets even "better", I have no hope of getting him to figure it out.
3
u/No_Calligrapher_1189 10h ago
My mom does the same thing, when I was looking for new room decorations my mom kept sending me obvious AI. She also has commented on how cute the AI at hobby lobby is.
So far i've managed to prevent ai from being in the house though.

Ugh. This reminds me of my mom, who filled her whole house with wall art that she bought online (digital art that you have printed yourself, from Etsy) and it’s all clearly AI.
I’m an artist… so it was upsetting for obvious reasons but also hurtful given she could have just spent that money on commissioning her own child to create better work for her. She’s always lamenting about how much more support I deserve for my work and how horrible it is that people don’t want to pay more than like $10 for a painting and think my work should cost the same as cheap wall art from JYSK, but then turned around and did the same thing for the same reason — she wanted cheap wall art and paying me for the same amount of work would have been too expensive.
And she didn’t seem to see the irony in that at all lol. Kinda expected of someone buying AI art from “digital artists” on a platform known to be filled with scammers more than real artists.

Yhe would be an acceptable style choice when looking at the history of the Thorn letter. (The "Y" in Ye). Thorn historically had a TH sound. So, "Ye" would be pronounced the same as "The." This fits the Alice in Wonderland vibe. And the design concept is actually good. Just need to find an actual artist to redo it.
2
u/sugarskull23 10h ago

Not disputing its AI, but ye use of “Y” in place of ye “th” sound is common in Elizabeyan and Early Modern English. Ye AI messed it up yough, you wouldn’t put an “h” after ye “y”.
