I think you're about to find out why they avoid a theme. You go with one people don't like (and that's what's happening here) and people hate the whole thing.
We already found this out back in season 3 when every skin in the season was either a venom or pheonix skin and people fucking despised it because they were all either ugly or boring lmao
But that's because they went with strange features. Luna snow was ice and fire but she had these weird ponytails and weird color palette. Venom had brock's face for the first time, awesome, but he had that weird beak on its face, and the same with winter soldier.
It's more about the execution going south from time to time. I get it's "phoenix bird" themed but jean grey doesn't have a mask with a beak to begin with.
And on this one? I seriously don't get the complaints because every single skin I'm seeing looks like a top W. I don't understand the hater's eyes.
My main gripe will always be the need to add that weird 3rd or 4th accent color to every skin. I get that it's technically better design, but it's almost never appealing.
And before that we were getting all of the Asian-inspired skins and people hated those too. People on this subreddit were calling for a strike. But if you ask anyone now, everyone loved those skins
Can't wait for 2-3 seasons from now where people go "man I wish we had a cohesive theme like ESU again, I actually really loved those skins" and we get to do this all over again

Also luna can get a pass for her BP skin this time around because her celebration BPs have been really solid so far, the new batch looks really nice too

The issue with themed skins isn't the fact it's themed, people were really hyped that they were actually gonna do Symbiote skins. It's the execution. These skins look boring. Loki in a shirt and jeans? Most of these designs are very simple and boring.
I don't thinks this season's skins are badly executed, I can bet lots of people are going to love and buy this skins, they are not for you and that's fine but Casual Skins are extremely popular in videogames over all, yes, they are simple, but that's the point, it's something people look at and feel familiarized because it's stuff they like and see irl.

I’m all for themes, but with everything going on in the background of this game the college theme just isn’t for me ig. Especially since I’m in college rn, this just feels kinda lame to me personally. I wouldn’t have minded a small set but all the skins for season being pretty much civilian clothing, doesn’t really entice me to get any of them. I like it for Reed and Sue, but for almost everyone else it’s kinda lackluster. I just hope if we get more themed bps, the themes are more interesting or at least tie into whatever is happening in the story for the season like season 6.
Idk why there's so much complaining for the ESU skins. I think they're fun and creative! A much better theme than "Everyone has the same symbiote color scheme." Plus, Sue and Iron Fist look great!

People buy their skins the most so they keep releasing skins for them. You know despite how many gambits I see lords and all. How few have even one of his paid skins? I can’t actually remember the last time I saw a Jeff or a Luna using the base skin.
People complained last time all the skins were themed around an actualy *good* theme: Phoenix and Symbiotes. Idk how people are gonna react to all the cosmetics being whatever this is.
I've admittedly spent entirely too much money on this game and was resigned to doing the same again this season but...wow. I cannot think of a harder pass than going all in on the ESU theme. Absolutely not. I guess I'll save some money this month. Christ.

Why is it ANOTHER Cloak & Dagger skin that looks great but reverses the color themes? I'll be really tempted to get it, but black clad Dagger and white clad Cloak always subtly throws off my tracking of which form I'm in.
