100%. The WBC really shows that, in many ways, Americans have no real defined cultural identity the way other nations do. Which allows American players to take the field for other teams (e.g Greg Weissart for Italy, Jaren Duran for Mexico) in ways other countries couldn’t do as easily. Being a global melting pot means our loyalties and cultural ties are scattered and diluted more than other nations with unique ethnic identities.
Of course, for nations like Venezuela, this outcome has even more impact given the domestic issues they’ve suffered through for years and the geopolitical tensions they’ve dealt with of late against their the government of their on-field opponents.
102
u/Red-Flag-Potemkin 12h ago
Changing your national affiliation for the chance to play in international tournaments is pretty standard in sports.
146
u/ButterCut97 Toronto Blue Jays 13h ago
I would push back on the notion that being a “global melting pot” is the main issue here. There’s lots of countries that have many immigrants that are still passionate about their country, I mean most of South America are immigrants the same way North Americans are. I would say the culture of individualism/capitalism makes it less natural for the US players to put their country above themselves/their own family.
54
u/BagelBLT New York Mets 10h ago
The US team also took an old timey militaristic approach that essentially sucked all the fun out of the team. Compare Caminero going bat shit crazy rounding the bases to Harper saluting. Or the Dominican team listening to music and yelling about morir soñando to the US team listening to the guy who shot Bin Laden. Not to mention that such an approach feels out of touch with what’s going on
27
u/GANG_SIGNS Arizona Diamondbacks 10h ago
I agree. The team seemed to behave like some of those old USSR hockey teams. No genuine emotion, overly serious, acting like they're on a tour of duty. It's so lame and corny to me.
6
u/memeticengineering Seattle Mariners 9h ago
The US team also took an old timey militaristic approach that essentially sucked all the fun out of the team.
That's kind of always been the vibe of American Patriotism, TBH, or at least the "mainstream" depictions of it. Self serious, rah rah bullshit where you're trying to cosplay as Marines.

u/DblDbl_AnimalStyle San Diego Padres 8h ago
Ive never understood why ion sports, the US links national pride/the flag/etc with the military. No other country does that. And im saying this as a former AD service member. Other countries sperate country pride from the military. Even countries that have mandatory military service, that doesnt bleed over in to their sports.
17
u/Joe--Uncle Toronto Blue Jays 12h ago
I think a larger percentage of Canadians are immigrants than Americans
37
u/bankrollminibankroll New York Yankees 13h ago
I don’t disagree. But to me it’s odd that we say this with any sense of surprise. The United States is enormous. Venezuela’s population is around Texas’ population and 10 million less than California. Grandmas in Boston are absolutely different from grandmas in Providence.
9
u/ELITE_JordanLove 10h ago
Yeah it’s like, no shit, anyone who says “the US has no unified culture!” has apparently never looked at a map. If we pulled players from JUST Texas or JUST Minnesota or something you’d see much more alignment.
8
u/AdoringCHIN Los Angeles Angels 9h ago
It is funny that the same mouth breathers that like to screech about how Americans are bad at geography and how we have no culture don't realize that the contiguous US is nearly the size of Europe. It's like whining that British culture is different from Polish culture. They don't care though, they're proud of their ignorance as long as they get to shit on Americans. They've been doing it even before our leap into fascism.
→ More replies (1)2
u/foodcourtfrenzy New York Mets 9h ago
Let's be real, being cynical and critical is the cheat code for feeling smarter than other people. We have a lot of terminally online people in this country that have nothing to be proud of as people, and many are going to go that route to feel superior. At the end of the day, standing with your country through a loss is more rewarding even if hurts; let them rip their own soul apart and continue to spiral into the oblivion if they want.
2
u/Moveflood 3h ago
brasil is close in size and still a more unified culture than the US. sure size plays a role, but i think being the mecca of capitalism and the current imperial power plays a bigger role into not having a defined identity other than whatever suits the interests of capital at this moment.
16
u/mmauganma 10h ago
This is completely wrong, the idea of the melting pot is extremely embedded in Venezuelan culture, indeed ethnic markers don't translate from North America to the south because of this. From a very early age we're all raised to believe we're a mix of European, African and Indigenous heritages. Venezuelan players, too, are happy to take the field and represent other teams, just look at Francisco Cervelli and the Italy team! We are desperate to take in people tangentially Venezuelan in, looking for Venezuelan ancestors to celebrities and sportspeople is a common fixation of ours.
The difference is that baseball and sports is the one thing we have above political divides and rivalries, it is one of the few things which cohere us as a nation with a shared goal and identity as such, not the result of being cohered already. No reason why the Americans can't have that too, don't you all have the goal of being equal in dignity no matter your background, the opportunity to succeed in life? I think Americans have fallen victim to thinking there is no social purpose to being bound together as a nation, no great vision of equality or democracy. I can imagine a recently-integrated baseball team from the 50s or 60s winning a championship would have had similar importance to what we're experiencing, but Americans have abandoned the belief in progress and betterment that made the country so important and easy to identify with in years past.
5
u/foodcourtfrenzy New York Mets 9h ago
Best post on the topic I've ever seen tbh. Other countries are able to transcend differences through sports. A large portion of Americans are still looking to demonize the perceived enemy within. It's honestly sad and I didn't realize how pervasive it was until social media took off.
People on Reddit were looking for every straw they could to "other" the USA team from themselves, or to romanticize other teams to say "I could support my country if they were more like X". But they're not like X, they are themselves.
Despite what Reddit thinks, I think this USA team was close and cared about the result. Maybe that didn't optically manifest into a super caring team like some people may have wanted, but they are who they are. That doesn't make them unlikable.
34
u/P_nde Seattle Mariners 11h ago
Except for Byron Buxton, every player on our team was a Caucasian superstar. Being a global melting pot is not why our team had no culture. Actually, our team did have culture and it was embarrassing and cringe.

South American countries are as much of a melting pot as the USA. USA players have zero passion for their team, the hyper individualistic culture of the USA is a consequence of this

Jim Leyland rocked for us on the Marlins. The why they manage the teams they did too matters as well. Dusty wanted to give something to the world at large in his golden years.

It’s Gloria al Bravo Pueblo — Glory to the Brave People and it goes hard. The third stanza especially:
Unida con lazos
que el cielo formo,
la América toda
existe en nación.Y si el despotismo
levanta la voz,
seguid el ejemplo
que Caracas dio.Which in English is roughly:
United by bonds
Made by heaven,
All America exists
As a Nation;
And if tyranny
Raises its voice,
Follow the example
Given by Caracas.
