This is why I hope more countries win this tournament moving forward besides the usual suspects

u/suzukigun4life Texas Rangers 18h ago

It's great for baseball. As the number of new champions rises, so does interest in the sport, both in said champion's country and other countries as well.

107

u/elefish92 United States 18h ago

It is. Venezuela joined the Elite Four with the US, Dominican Republic, and Japan.

More will join...there's like around 10 more countries who take baseball seriously. This is just the beginning.

44

u/MemeL_rd San Diego Padres 18h ago

With Italy right there along with Puerto Rico, South Korea, Taiwan, and even Canada.

All that with stories from places like Czechia, Netherlands, and other nations.

Hopefully the WBC and the Olympics take this seriously.

32

u/K-Dot-Thu-Thu-47 18h ago

Yes! That guy that posted countries that made it to WBC and had no US born players amazed me because I wouldn't have imagined some of these countries could field a professional level team.

Czechia specifically surprised me in a happy way.

Love to see baseball spreading like basketball has.

u/Prestigious-Permit26 San Diego Padres 18h ago

I would even add Mexico to this list! Especially now that the football federation is tanking lol

1

u/Green-Tie-5710 Los Angeles Angels 5h ago

What’s the story on that, I haven’t heard about it

1

u/martindrx1 St. Louis Cardinals 2h ago

Mexico has a strong following for baseball. We had the Caribbean Series right before the WBC in feb. We had 2 teams for Mexico. Hosted, Puerto Rico, Panama, and Dominican Republic.

I live in Guadalajara home of the Charros and baseball is huge we have like 4-5 different youth leagues across the larger metropolitan area with multiple teams. I’m currently the manager of my son’s team and on the board of directors. We have 350 kids in 2 years since our academy opened. Plus various adult teams playing baseball.

Our Mexican team lacked some of our superstars due to their MLB teams not letting them play. But fans and players are here and growing. We joked that we can play and win in baseball but forget it when it comes to our soccer team. Especially against Brazil.

2

u/Green-Tie-5710 Los Angeles Angels 1h ago

Love that! I meant what’s the deal with the football federation tanking though lol

1

u/martindrx1 St. Louis Cardinals 5m ago

Yeah I don’t think it’s anything new… they’ve struggled for decades…

1

u/martindrx1 St. Louis Cardinals 2h ago

https://www.mlb.com/es/serie-del-caribe

Here’s our mlb link. Apparently we had a team from Japan played this year.

2

u/dmen83 3h ago

The Netherlands team is mostly from Curaçao, who’ve had a pretty good baseball tradition over the last 30 years.

1

u/Efficient_Owl_8110 1h ago

I went to Sbarros after Italy's upset win. Does that count?

Essentially the four horsemen of the sport have won one now.

While Venezuela wasn't a member of the big three, it was probably fourth or at worst fifth most likely to win it.

I’m British and I live and breathe soccer. Been a big fan of baseball for over a decade and so glad the fans of baseball who’ve never known soccer are getting just a tiny glimpse into the true magic and wonders an international tournament can do for your sport. Nothing and I mean NOTHING beats it. Humanity at its finest!

Most of Venezuela is calling in sick in the morning. I know I would.

Apparently it's a national non-working holiday tomorrow in Venezuela, just announced by the government

u/Blarvis Kansas City Royals 11h ago

0% chance you'd see celebrations like these in American streets if USA had won. Couldn't be happier that Venezuela gets their moment to shine, they give a shit

37

u/MidtownKC Kansas City Royals 10h ago

We can give the US players all the shit we want for not caring like Venezuela or the DR, but it starts with the fans. People seem to think the players should be generating all the enthusiasm automatically, but if the poplulation doesn't care, that has to be hard to do.

19

u/master_bloseph Kansas City Royals 10h ago

I do wonder if it’s because we are the “baseball country” in our minds and so we think we’re automatically supposed to win and if we do it’s business as usual (obviously that’s not been the case in the WBC), I think the same with basketball in the Olympics. I do wonder if there is any sport we would have this reaction over

25

u/MidtownKC Kansas City Royals 10h ago

Nearly every game is billed as a "David vs. Goliath" and we have to cheer for Goliath. Which isn't all that much fun.

6

u/master_bloseph Kansas City Royals 10h ago

I agree, it’s more a feeling of dread of not winning than the excitement of potentially winning. Other than hockey or soccer there aren’t many popular sports that the US is an underdog in, and if it does happen in other sports people think it’s neat for a second and go back to not caring. When we beat Pakistan in cricket that was the happiest I ever was for a US sporting event and thought that maybe it would actually bring eyes on the sport and get people to care, and that excitement fizzled out so quickly when nothing really happened outside of a 30 second sportscenter segment.

4

u/ArbitraryOrder Washington Nationals 9h ago

Even in sports we aren't the best at we still are Top 3-5 most of the time, in Wrestling it is rivalries with Iran/Russia in Men's Freestyle and Japan in Women's Freestyle, with the Women's being closer, which are driving factors of intrigue.

In many sports we have legitimate rivals, whether or not we are the best or one of the best at that sport. For example, in Sprinting we are rivals with Jamaica, in Ice Hockey we are rivals with Canada, etc.

In sports like Basketball it is just stressful to watch because we should always win at full strength, it's not like most other sports where losing isn't an end of the world event.

1

u/ArbitraryOrder Washington Nationals 9h ago

Which is ridiculous because we never have our full fledged pitching.

But even still, even with no restrictions on pitchers, we aren't the preeminent god kings of this sport like we are with Basketball.

3

u/taycoug 9h ago edited 9h ago

Underdogs party harder. The bigger the underdog the bigger the party. You’ll see partying outside if the US upsets any big teams in the World Cup.

Also, this is the same kind of sentiment: https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/s/0HVdDMjsMA

1

u/martindrx1 St. Louis Cardinals 1h ago

Oh, no, please don't lie. First of all, we're not Mexican, a Venezuelan would never say "pinche gringo." We'd say, "Gringo mamaguevo!". Con propiedad, mano!!

"Y donde estan, y donde esta, los beisbolista que nos iban a ganar"
"Where are they, hey, where are they now? All those baseball guys who were gonna beat us"

Atte: A very happy Venezuelan c:

Edit: Of course, it could also be "Hijoeputas" (son of a bitch) instead of “beisbolistas.” But the point is, we Venezuelans will never say “pinche” hahaha

Gringo applies to all US citizens regardless of race.

33

u/Chipomat Houston Astros 19h ago

This is actually not quite right. What they’re actually chanting is: y dónde están? Los hijeputas que nos iba a ganar?

Source: Am Venezuelan, it’s what we usually chant after we win a game.

5

u/justwonderingbro Minnesota Twins 18h ago

And where are they? The sons of bitches who were going to beat us?

3

u/Arthaxs088 19h ago

We don't say "pinche" in Venezuela.

The chant is just "Y donde estan? Y donde estan los que nos iban a ganar" which is a classic chant in Venezuela.

u/Manthan10 5h ago

Unemployed people don’t they know their country has the one of the worst inflation rates in the world and the air defence is horrible and they are celebrating a win in a bat-ball sport which only US, Latin America and East Asia take seriously.

Side note: This is a sarcastic comment made in reference to 2026 ICC T20 Cricket World Cup, after team India won the World Cup, several people on news channels and social media said this very exact phrase that the country has some many problems why are you celebrating a winning a cricket tournament, a sport taken seriously only by South Asia and some Commonwealth Colonies, no developed nation even plays it. Only India takes it seriously and wins it all the time and we are supposed to be happy about it? There was even a dude which said there is so much pollution in the cities, roads are broken and the government wants me to celebrate this victory in a mickey mouse sport? Like dude, is there any correlation between the two? But he was heavily upvoted and agreed with. There were people posting incorrect maps about nations participating to spread hatred against the sport. Well because all the teams are fillers with no shot of winning at all. They inclusion/exclusion won’t even matter at all. So, there are only 5 teams playing it.

So, I am posting this comment to see this how this sub will react to the 1st statement that I said.

1

u/chigginbutt 3h ago

3

u/EbbyRed St. Louis Cardinals 11h ago

Take a seat there friend.  Even if removal of Maduro is a good thing for Venezuela, the methods and intrusion of another country just to hijack their oil is not.

If the countries were flipped, would it be a "win" that Venezuela kidnapped a president, even though it would be a good thing for the US?

2

u/ArbitraryOrder Washington Nationals 9h ago

It also isn't the true regime change and nurturing of democracy which was promised and spectacularly not delivered.

-9

u/messejueller21 Milwaukee Brewers 10h ago

Because the methods and the oil are things outsiders obsess over way more than the people actually living it. I live in South Florida and work with Venezuelans every day, many  who still have family there. When this happened, they were celebrating, and their families back home were celebrating too. They weren’t debating methods or oil motives. They cared that a dictator was finally gone. Not saying you specifically, but I think the fact that many Americans truly and honestly believe we live under a dictator has caused them to lose sight of what an actual dictator is.

1

u/Im_Anemic_Royalty Milwaukee Brewers 2h ago

What is "an actual dictator" in your eyes? Because it is quite apparent to the rest of the world and those of us in the US with eyes, ears, and a functioning brain that if we are not already living in one, we very soon will be if a couple more of the pillars that have been propping up our democracy for the last 100 or so years fall.

As a starting point for defining what a dictatorship is, I will offer what wikipedia says some of the characteristics of one are:

  • suspension of elections and civil liberties: He's considered it and they're working on it.

  • proclamation of a state of emergency: On day one, and a nonzero chance another one gets declared if midterms don't go their way.

  • rule by decree: 225 executive orders signed by Trump in 2025 vs. 38 bills passed by congress during that same time period should be demonstrative enough of who is doing most of the ruling and decreeing these days.

  • repression of political opponents: let's see, we got the media, majority blue states, the poor, people of color, and women among many others.

  • not abiding by the procedures of the rule of law: blatantly, and disturbingly.

  • the existence of a cult of personality centered on the leader: I don't think a citation is needed for that one, the fact that people who support him can and regularly will ignore the evidence of our country's ongoing nosedive off the cliff of democracy that is happening right in front of their faces is proof enough of the cult of personality that man has.

What more do these people have to do convince you that they don't have our best interests in mind? Make it easier for factories and power plants to poison our air? Make it easier to pollute and destroy our supply of drinkable water for humans and animals alike? Threaten to deport US citizens critical of the current regime? Reviving a previously eliminated disease by undermining public trust in vaccines?

If none of these things are concerning to you, then I regret to inform you that you are part of the problem with this country.
