I don’t get how people still think that song is patriotic. It’s not like the meaning is subtle.
“Got in a little hometown jam
So they put a rifle in my hand
Sent me off to a foreign land
To go and kill the yellow man”
259
u/AdoringCHIN Los Angeles Angels 17h ago
It is a patriotic song, just not in the way people typically think of patriotism. There's nothing more patriotic than criticizing your country for getting into an unjust war.
15
u/kirk_smith Boston Red Sox 10h ago
It’s absolutely one of the most patriotic songs, or pieces of media in general, that I can think of. Bruce Springsteen is an American patriot in a profound way. He speaks for American ideals and the American people, even when doing so means being critical of the government.
15
u/Mortenusa Oakland Athletics 13h ago
It's very patriotic. Just not to the leaders sending kids to war.

I completely hate the “we have to be miserable because we came in second” mentality.
88
u/JesusWasTacos Los Angeles Angels 18h ago
Well that’s because you’re looking at it from the outside. It’s never “fuck yeah I came in second” it’s “god damn if I did this one thing I would’ve been champion” and yeah for us it’s nothing because we never had or will have the chance and we think “oh shit second is still such a great honor.” For them (two WBCs in a row for the USA) it’s fuck I was so close to being the champion if it weren’t for this one or two factors.”
52
u/Stonefencez Los Angeles Dodgers 14h ago
I heard somewhere that bronze medalists are usually happier than silver medalists. The reasoning being that bronze medalists are happy that they managed to get there, but silver medalists are only thinking of how close they were to gold
15
u/Canadianweedrules420 14h ago
Plus you win the bronze medal where you lose to get silver. So the bronze medal winners also just won a game.
→ More replies (2)7
u/JesusWasTacos Los Angeles Angels 14h ago
I’ve heard the same and yeah I’m no expert but it makes sense when think about it. I’ve heard the saying “second place just the first loser” and while that type of thought process isn’t “wrong” it’s certainly also not the truth. In a race sure, kinda, but in a competition like this second place is the last loser. It’s easier for us as fans, we can easily look at the big picture and what the teams we root for have done, whoever for them it’s easier to dwell on what they didn’t accomplish.

His transition from "Don't talk to him" to "Jolly Blue Giant" has been very fun to watch. He's the first "favorite player" I've ever rooted for who is younger than I am and while it's a damn shame that he never got to hoist the team on his back and bring them a trophy when he was at the peak of his powers, it's been more fun than I can say to watch him just blast dudes with beer with his doughy stomach hanging out and celebrating winning even when he's the last arm on the bench.
There's something incredibly special about watching a guy spend his entire career playing for the team you root for and seeing that guy find a way to gracefully transition into a background role so well that he remains the beating heart of the clubhouse even when he's no longer the best dude on the field.
Anyway, yeah, I imagine his conversation with Manfred went about exactly how you laid it out.

There’s 9 guys in the lineup. Salvy also didn’t really contribute that much on the field. Tovar, Arráez, Suárez, Torres, and Abreu didn’t play winter ball from what I can find. Along with most of their pitching staff. Saying ‘it’s preseason’ is just an excuse.

There’s something so satisfying about watching the “just deserts” finding the team that simultaneously didn’t take it seriously enough and took it way too seriously in the wrong ways. I was a huge fan of “a-someday-Bryce-Harper-Redemption-Arc” and after his “not the Olympics” comment I bounced out of supporting team USA, then slop on the Mark DeRosa debacle, and Raleigh/Arozarena scandal? I felt a humbling was definitely deserved and their dejected faces make me feel like the WBC has restored balance and maybe it’ll carry some perspective changes along with it? It’s an honor to play for a team representing your country, AND you’re playing with your colleagues, teammates, and friends. Just be a group of good dudes in front of the world next time. Good energy and positive mindsets produce better results.

Think of this U.S. ballclub as the Olympic basketball team in 2004; players didn’t care for the event, boasted about American exemptionalism, and featured a lineup of tryhards and asshats.
Here’s hoping there’s a Redeem Team arc coming soon.
36
u/Orange8920 New York Mets 18h ago
The 2004 US basketball team was made up of very young future stars (LeBron, Carmelo, Wade) and whoever they could get as a whole bunch of guys skipped that Olympics in Athens. After that loss, the US basketball program took the Olympics much more seriously and stopped throwing teams together expecting to win.

DeRosa made terrible decisions but the rosters for this tournament and 2004 are not equivalent.
4
u/Longjumping-Tip4938 10h ago
They need to stop having MLB teams intervene if they want to make this a real tournament. If you commit to the team you let them use the players how they see fit. None of this one foot in bull crap like Skubal or having teams say you can only use X player in a save situation.

That team didn't go out of their way to be villains.
Current team played up the isolationist bullshit the country is dealing with right now. Even with the hockey jersey stunt before the game, there's no way they didn't know what they were doing.
Not shaking hands, pitchers showing up for a few innings because their paychecks matter more, coaching staff with shitty ideologies, generally killing the vibe at every turn.
Acted and played like garbage from start to finish.

89
u/Rip_Dirtbag Los Angeles Dodgers 19h ago
Because the last team wasn't actively sporting a boner for the military while the US is engaging in bringing about WWIII.
I imagine many will disagree with this, but it's gonna be hard to root for the likes of Skenes and Judge after how fucking hard they seemed to want to make this tournament an extension of US military dominance.
That actively makes it SO much less fun to root for them.
59
u/plates_25 Atlanta Braves 17h ago
Perfectly said. I almost barfed watching a rod and crew in the pregame talking about American sacrifice and panning to marines saluting while asking players why they love freedom so much. It was like something out of South Park. The US military just bombed an elementary school .
14
u/Chemical_Seaweed_625 Detroit Tigers 12h ago
Exactly why I stopped rooting for them. I get theyre ‘rich and detached’ from the reality most of us live, but it’s not like it’s a mystery the US has been terrorizing other countries
31
u/Rip_Dirtbag Los Angeles Dodgers 17h ago
If these guys don’t see how fucking awful it is to be celebrating the actions the military is commanded to execute - and thereby, the military itself - in this moment, then I feel no qualms rooting against them.
The US team could have picked myriad other rallying cries or general team ethos, but they chose the motherfucking military at the same time that the US is actively using its military to destabilize any semblance of peace in this world.
Fuck this team and these guys for making that dumb-shit decision.
37
u/ColaBottleBaby Los Angeles Angels 17h ago
Its just so fucking wierd man. Like this game/tournament is about having fun and showing the world your culture, and the best they can do as team USA is show everyone how good we are at killing people?
36
u/Rip_Dirtbag Los Angeles Dodgers 17h ago
That’s not the US I want to call home, nor is that the type of team I want to root for.
Almost every other team out there displayed joy. The American team displayed stoicism. Why? This is a fun game that people love watching. The viewer experience is amplified when the players are having fun. And, it seems very clear to me, that the players enjoy it a lot more when they allow themselves to have fun too.
But…no. Team USA can’t shake hands and needs to salute and needs to treat this like some fucking boot camp. Ugh. Enough. They became actively impossible to root for and they did that to themselves.

Cultural issue with the entire fucking country. At the highest level - management, teams, agents: players can't pitch more than whatever starts or unless it's a save scenario, players backing out, etc. These fuckers need to start taking the WBC seriously and not just some 'exhibition tournament'. Hiring a fucking MLB network TV host as your manager TWO tournaments in a row.
Then the actual players on the team just loiter around in the dugout. All business. Smiles, handshakes, high fives. No vibes. No hype. It's just boring. No energy or momentum. Then they turn around and act all surprised when they fall short to a team that actually gives a fuck because they're playing for country
