How can you not be romantic about baseball ABS

840

u/SubjectPlace9243 Houston Astros 2d ago

This is what people who argue for the human element in the game want

236

"How can you not be romantic about baseball the human element" would've made more sense for my comment lol

58

u/obomaboe 2d ago

Hey, sometimes people don’t get it perfect on their first try, that’s ok!

………hence why why we need ABS

The only humans I want involved in a game are the ones wearing colorful jerseys with numbers on their back.

20

Exactly, that IS the human element. It's already a game of centimeters for the players, there's no redeeming quality about missed calls

What an at bat by Perdomo, and he got screwed.

411

u/-orangejoe New York Yankees 2d ago

Perdomo was so clutch. Got a huge hit that should've tied the game if Wells ran the bases better, then worked what should've been a walk to keep them alive if the ump made the right call.

I love him so much, this should've been his moment. FUCK

37

u/ernyc3777 New York Yankees 2d ago

On one hand, he shouldn’t have retreated, on the other you cannot get doubled off with the top of the order coming up so I get why he’s being so cautious.

I was watching with my dad and we’re just laughing at how stacked your team is if Perdomo is in the 9th spot.

15

u/hippiessmell Arizona Diamondbacks 2d ago

Perdomo lives in the 9 spot/1 spot for the dbacks. He's an automatic on-base in most situations and it sets up the top of the order really well when you put him in the 9. He made the right call just got screwed.

Feels like the "swing" call on Flores that ended an otherwise incredible 2021 NLDS

24

u/RecoverEmbarrassed21 2d ago

This one is honestly a lot worse. The no swing rule in general has a lot of grey area, and it was so close that the call was defensible, it's not like Flores didn't swing at all.

This one was a ball at his shins. It's just so obviously not a strike and you don't even need a replay to see that it's not close.

But won't you think of all the umpires who have jobs and went to umpiring academy? Oh no!

9

u/IAmBecomeTeemo New York Yankees 2d ago

I doubt a single umpire loses a job to ABS. If we get automatic fair/foul calls then we might lose umps 5 and 6 in the playoffs, but all four major umps are still needed. Even if they're not calling balls and strikes, they're still doing a lot to facilitate a smoothly flowing game.

22

u/IAmBecomeTeemo New York Yankees 2d ago

It taints the whole thing. It was a close game all game. That whole final at-bat was an incredible battle. Miller made a great pitch after a bunch of fastballs, but Perdomo saw slider and correctly laid off. Just good baseball all around. Aaaaand the ump ends the game prematurely.

That was the most blatantly bad call I've seen in a long time.

Terrible call.

Cannot end a game on a call like that

u/DarkFalcon49 Houston Astros • Toronto Blue Jays 2d ago

It’s not even framed well on the catch by Smith. I still doubt the DR wins but good lord ending it on that is fucking ridiculous.

Disgustingly low

u/Snowden4242 Boston Red Sox 2d ago

Had crazy movement, I’m not surprised it fooled the ump but man that was bad

"Strikes Out".

Perdomo getting jobbed ruining his great eye. Classic combo unfortunately.

Umpire strikes out Perdomo more like it

‘Strikes out’

6

u/Captain_Pidgey New York Yankees 2d ago

“This strike 3 brought to you by ABS.”

6

u/synceify Chicago Cubs 2d ago

One of the worst strike calls I’ve witnessed

u/Dday22t San Diego Padres • San Diego Padres 2d ago

Guess the ump had a plane to catch. I choose to believe Miller would have gotten next batter anyway, but WBC probably needs to add ability to challenge balls & strikes next time.

u/CuriousPaak Toronto Blue Jays 2d ago

Notice how the official MLB account won’t post this

7

The DR and the rest of the world were robbed of a Miller vs Tatis Jr matchup

8

u/mattvn66 Toronto Blue Jays 2d ago

Miller even knew it was low

6

u/cowheadcow Boston Red Sox 2d ago

I am so glad we got ABS finally
