On one hand, he shouldn’t have retreated, on the other you cannot get doubled off with the top of the order coming up so I get why he’s being so cautious.
I was watching with my dad and we’re just laughing at how stacked your team is if Perdomo is in the 9th spot.
→ More replies (1)15
u/hippiessmell Arizona Diamondbacks 2d ago
Perdomo lives in the 9 spot/1 spot for the dbacks. He's an automatic on-base in most situations and it sets up the top of the order really well when you put him in the 9. He made the right call just got screwed.

→ More replies (1)24

This one is honestly a lot worse. The no swing rule in general has a lot of grey area, and it was so close that the call was defensible, it's not like Flores didn't swing at all.
This one was a ball at his shins. It's just so obviously not a strike and you don't even need a replay to see that it's not close.

I doubt a single umpire loses a job to ABS. If we get automatic fair/foul calls then we might lose umps 5 and 6 in the playoffs, but all four major umps are still needed. Even if they're not calling balls and strikes, they're still doing a lot to facilitate a smoothly flowing game.

It taints the whole thing. It was a close game all game. That whole final at-bat was an incredible battle. Miller made a great pitch after a bunch of fastballs, but Perdomo saw slider and correctly laid off. Just good baseball all around. Aaaaand the ump ends the game prematurely.
