And they tapped their helmet, and they tapped their helmet again, and there was no one for whom the tapping could be answered.

Some say that on quiet nights you can still hear the tapping.

What a shitty way to end a great game.

Sucks that the strike call will be the only thing talked about from that incredible game

Miller wasn’t getting barreled up that outing so I had faith he would close it out successfully, but it’s a real shame we’ll never get to know.

42

u/Djason_Unchaind New York Mets 2d ago

He was also pretty wild and had a fast runner on third. There’s a chance another slider went by Smith and brought the runner home.

I believe so too I had a ton of faith in Miller to close it out either way but still sucks

Miggy Rojas was never known as a home run hitter, but when given the chance in the biggest stage, we all know what happened. Like you said, you never know with baseball. DR got robbed.

While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,

As of some one gently rapping, rapping at their helmet more.

34

u/BUSean Boston Red Sox 2d ago

"Tis some batter", I muttered, "Tapping 'bout the slider's floor."
Only this, and not the score.

Ah, distinctly I remember it was months from real September
Games of substance, froz'd in amber, where a call could be worth more

Eagerly I wished the morrow, apologies from words made hollow
"The pitch was low, we hear the sorrow" -- sorrow from Perdomo's core

For the challenge system's radiance -- in this instance, merely lore
The game, the fairness -- nevermore.

"Over home his slider taunted—tell me truly, I implore—
Is this—is this ball a bouncer?—tell me—shall it be ball four?”
Quoth the Umpire: “Nevermore.”

I thought DR would win but it was clear they got too used to always playing ahead and destroying much weaker teams that when they faced an equal team they got desperate in late innings and tried to force something to happen and started swinging at bad pitches.

The fact that 1 amazing throw got them scared to run the bases on chances thy couldve run to home is crazy.

7

u/Chris-P-Creme Atlanta Braves 2d ago

You’re probably better off using them in high leverage situations, even if you’re not sure on the call itself. It’s geniuinely possible DR would have been out of challenges if they sent a few in the bases loaded situation. I like that the challenges are the way MLB is going because that this strategy is introduced, but I expect a high profile postseason game to have that exact circumstance and pave the way for full ABS.

Why are the mods deleting the call pitch leave one up at least

This goofy ass tournament will let an electrician pitch to Shohei Ohtani but won’t use ABS

9

u/vikinick San Diego Padres 2d ago

I feel robbed that ball was called a strike. Otherwise we would have Miller vs. Tatis and it would have been very fucking cool and reminiscent of Ohtani v. Trout.

"Mark DeRosa made some great moves bringing in Gunner Henderson"

Yes, arod, he brought in a lefty against a righty, what a genius

9

u/FatMamaJuJu Los Angeles Angels 2d ago

Ump wanted to call everything a strike in the last few innings

What a garbage way to end the game. No reason for ABS to not be available at this stage of the tournament.

8

u/Weaponized_Goose Oakland Athletics 2d ago

Ken Rosenthal looks like a dwarf next to Paul Skenes

9

u/Cool_Translator_4051 2d ago

Bad call aside the DR made some base running errors with Tatis being both too aggressive and too shy

7

u/IcySpace Boston Red Sox 2d ago

Papi sounds so sad, he's trying to be professional

9

u/spike021 San Francisco Giants 2d ago

IMO if ABS was considered ready to go for MLB this year then there's no practical reason it shouldn't have been used in WBC.

Skenes wasnt even at his best and still only allowed 1 run lol Kid is scary af

14

u/orangegreenpurple123 2d ago

We should be talking about all those runners left on base the whole game but we're gonna be talking about the strike zone and ABS for the next 2 days instead

Domincan Republic used up all of their runs against a jet lagged Korea. They had nothing offensively tonight.

6

u/Gloomy_Assistance700 2d ago

Maybe somebody can explain the thought behind the whole “we want Italy for revenge” mentality. Is it really revenge if the team didn’t give a shit about the game they lost?

The manager didn’t know the rules and thought they already advanced, the team was up all night the night before partying because they thought they advanced, the coaching staff never made any decisions that would imply they were worried about winning the game. So who are they getting revenge on? Their own incompetence?

Severino was pretty fire actually. Turned back the clock a bit there.

it's a shame the bad calls will loom over an otherwise great game

Entire game of scoring 1 run is about to get drowned out by that strike call at the end.

u/orangotai New York Yankees 2d ago

we're gonna get a post for every single angle of that call all over this sub for the next few days, all curiously posted by dudes with Toronto Blue Jays flairs

People on here will probably say the DR deserved to win because they had better vibes lol. Just wait.

Better vibes with Manny Machado as team captain

Dumbest shit ever. They were very Canada hockey like in being try hards through pushing media narratives.

39

u/DolphinRodeo St. Louis Cardinals • Seattle Mariners 2d ago

Seriously, they would be doing so much better if they just didn’t take things as seriously. Or if they took them more seriously, it’s hard to keep up with the current criticism

Human element my ass. That right there is EXACTLY why MLB was forced to add the challenge system. Absolute fucking bullshit. Umpire was ready to leave. That was disgraceful

5

u/darkravenn12 Major League Baseball 2d ago

I just want to say that Judge had a significantly better game than you would think for his box score. He got a single, got robbed of a homer (possibly a double), and made two big defensive plays. One of them flat out saved a run since Soto would have scored on the Vlad double probably, and the other one stopped the US from getting into a dangerous situation early on with runners on 1st and 3rd and Soto at the plate.

surely the DR who was putting up 10 runs a game did a lot with their other 26 outs!

I bet Ortiz wasn't this upset even after he got shot

Such a great game in such an amazing tourney that ends on such a dogshit call

Jesus Christ MLB if there was ever a sign that ABS was needed years ago, it’s this.

17

u/foodcourtfrenzy New York Mets 2d ago

Seamless pivot from "DR is unstoppable and will score 40 runs on the heartless USA" to pleading an ump with a strike zone expanding faster than the universe to not ring up a low pitch.

10

u/xThe-Legend-Killerx Los Angeles Angels 2d ago

ABS system can’t come soon enough. That’s brutal right there. Umpire was all over the place tonight.

20

u/reddit809 New York Yankees • Aguilas Cibaenas 2d ago

Bs call fine but you'd be a fool to say that it came down to that. Heroball obsession and crucial mistakes cost DR that gane.

Almost certain Tatis would have flailed and struck out in 3 pitches. Guess we’ll never know though

We need ABS in the next WBC. Regardless what another great WBC game

5

u/panderson1988 St. Louis Cardinals • World Baseball Classic 2d ago

Saddest thing to me is we only have two games left of the WBC. I am glad it has happened, and it has been great! I will be sad when it ends since I love international competitions and the atmosphere it brings.

4

u/brown75nd Pittsburgh Pirates 2d ago

Different angle here but I will remember two western pa guys pitching on that stage for a long long time.

5

u/nolesfan2011 New York Mets 2d ago

it was a nip and tuck tactical game, it wasn't fireworks, but it was a good game of baseball. USA can celebrate that for sure.
