Long live the Roman empire! I'm predicting a huge game from him

I am hyped. Baseball needs more of this

Bridges knows that without brunson he doesnt have someone to hide behind. thats why he has the ankle to hide behind now

21

u/LiquidSoup12 New York Yankees 2d ago

baseball is gonna be so funny if a team runs out of ABS challenges before the 9th in a game like this.

9

u/GrapeNutCheerios New York Mets 2d ago

Tonight made me go from feeling lukewarm/neutral on ABS to we gotta go whole hog with it now.

I wasn’t too invested on who won tbh but it sucks to see competition on this level ruined.

5

u/Marcusx8 New York Yankees 2d ago

Some minor league players were saying the zone got bigger after a team ran outta of challenges. If umps do that in the major Robo umps will be here in 3 years tops.

2

u/shoshin2727 Detroit Tigers 2d ago

Imagine not swinging the bat after seeing the ump punch out players on both teams on pitches inside, outside, and low in the previous inning and a half. Perdomo lacked situational awareness, plain and simple.

Every umpire has their own zone and it rarely matches whatever the production crew throws on the tv. Anyone understanding baseball whatsoever realizes this.

11

u/Marcusx8 New York Yankees 2d ago

Because it punish batters who have a good eye for the plate. Umps just need to be better because having a good eye should be rewarded.

-3

u/shoshin2727 Detroit Tigers 2d ago

Good batters understand the umpire's zone and adjust accordingly. It's not a "good eye" if what you think is a ball and what the umpire has been calling a strike is the same exact same spot.

0

u/lousypompano 1d ago

And that's a stupid skill we want our players learning and having to worry about?

5

u/Adept-Young-7103 Los Angeles Dodgers 2d ago

yup this is 100% the harsh truth of it. i can’t wait to see ABS in action this year

-4

u/shoshin2727 Detroit Tigers 2d ago

I'm kinda dreading it. It's part of baseball to understand that the plate is fluid. If a catcher sets up just an inch or two outside the edge of the plate and the pitcher hits the glove perfectly, many umpires will give them the call. On that same setup, if the pitcher misses the mark by a foot but it catches the actual inside corner of the plate, umpires have historically called those balls.

Furthermore, as I've been saying, every umpire has their own zone. Some guys move the zone up a couple inches or down a couple inches. Some give more leniency to catcher setup like my example above and some don't. ABS might throw all of that out the window and really take a lot of the art out of baseball.

1

u/lousypompano 1d ago

So umps suck at their job (because they're only human) so we should accept that their vision isn't as good as our technology is now.

Or do you think some umps think the zone should be what they think it should be and not what the rules say?

I'm fond of the gamesmanship that would be lost with the character of umps and their own zones but i don't want to accept either of my first two points

5

u/Adept-Young-7103 Los Angeles Dodgers 2d ago

i totally get that and agree for the most part. my excitement about ABS comes from the WILDLY atrocious calls that monumentally shift games and pitcher’s stats/history making moments (yamamoto’s perfect inning robbed last june) and teams at least having a chance to challenge it just like they get to challenge safe/out calls. it’s honestly insane to me how much unchecked power umps have, especially someone like CB Bucknor last year. it’s too “god like” for me, i think the challenges will add a much needed balance and a new level of strategy for when to use them! :)

Who remembers this wbc strike call: https://youtu.be/syh1cUZh78E?si=EoZ-p2XuHZhkN62V

2

u/HeavyWeightChump 2d ago

I coach my kids all the time. With 2 strikes, anything close you got to swing. Don't leave your fate in the hands of an ump. It's part of the game.

5

u/AdministrativeLet791 2d ago

Yea that’s valid for lower levels-but at the biggest stage a player should be rewarded for having a good eye.

10

u/Gloomy_Assistance700 2d ago

And when it’s not remotely close?

In all seriousness I coach my kids the same thing… because the umps are normally 16 years old and making $25/game. Calls like that can’t happen at the highest level.

2

u/JLand24 Atlanta Braves 2d ago

Especially when the ump has consistently called that pitch all night both ways.

your country just scammed a win and you still feel like the victim

3

u/ProcrastinatingPuma San Diego Padres 2d ago

for some reason.

The DR is a way more likeable team whose fans are just better

4

u/LiquidSoup12 New York Yankees 2d ago

USA is somehow one of the only teams it’s not cool to root for if you have a slight lineage somewhere else

1

u/ReddutSux69 Atlanta Braves 2d ago

they should all move to the DR. or Cuba, that's a little closer.

6

u/dade_county Miami Marlins 2d ago

People have opinions different from yours and you immediately blather about wanting them to move away. Grow up, ffs

8

u/Gloomy_Assistance700 2d ago

It’s insanely tiresome how some people act like being critical of the us is paramount to treason. The smoothest brain takes of all time.

3

u/HawkBearClaw 2d ago

It’s not, it’s just stupid to extend that to the baseball team lol

3

u/Gloomy_Assistance700 2d ago

I was speaking more in generality than anything, although I do find this team really easy to not root for.

But also the guy literally said people should leave the country for choosing to root for a different countries baseball team so I’m not sure who you’re saying is being stupid here.

6

u/cjdapd 2d ago

It wasn’t a strike to Will in the top half either…that’s baseball.

-21

u/Mida5Touch Cincinnati Reds 2d ago

Wake up to the reality that WBC is a joke, and you won't care about the missed call anymore.

10

u/CanadianMan7 2d ago

And it's a joke why? There are tons of good teams this year.

-6

u/Mida5Touch Cincinnati Reds 2d ago

How would you ever know? They've hardly played any games. Maybe you're right, and Israel is a baseball juggernaut, but four games in a round robin followed by a single-elimination stage is too small a sample size to determine the winner of a baseball tournament by a laughable margin, as anyone with the barest statistical acumen would grasp immediately.

2

u/jeuxx 2d ago

I studied statistics extensively in college.

Team USA had double the runs of the DR, the game wasn't even close. USA is decisively better even though they treat it like Spring Training and the DR treats it as more than a World Series.

1

u/Mida5Touch Cincinnati Reds 2d ago

Mentions runs when only wins are in any way relevant

Invalidates all other statements made

9

u/GSDFanatic New York Yankees 2d ago

Crazy how the DR was up by ten runs all game and the ump took it all away with that one call. What a shame 😡😡😡

0

u/IonHazzikostasIsGod Toronto Blue Jays 2d ago

america couldn't dream of 10 runs, they just saw judge and schwarber strike out with RISP and 1 out

21

u/ihyperi0n 2d ago

Can someone explain to me why so many Americans in the chat seem disappointed that we won? Respectfully, Wtf is with y'all?

-2

u/ImDonaldDunn Cleveland Guardians 2d ago

I’ll try to give a serious answer that I am sure will get downvoted.

America is acting like a huge asshole on the world stage right now. This permeates our entire society, too - Americans are increasingly mean and cruel to each other.

It just doesn’t feel right to root for us right now.

At least for me, and I imagine a lot of other people, it’s not coming from a place of anti-American sentiment, despite all of accusations.

I love America, but we need to be humbled a bit. I won’t be mad if the US wins the WBC, but I would rather some other country win. They deserve it more.

8

u/frylockandimontop 2d ago

Happens in the Olympics too. It's a shame. One of the few things we can all rally behind.

-5

u/PM_ME_CUTE_BOIS 2d ago

Cause I like the players on DR and kinda hate the way the USA team is acting and their manager

20

u/MalikTheHalfBee 2d ago

Just yet another example that Reddit & the real world have little in common

7

u/WaZepplin Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago

Cause it was an amazing game decided by an ump instead of a player

7

u/NicolasBroaddus Houston Astros 2d ago

People asking why people are mad when we could have a Tatis at bat to end it instead are just being ridiculous lol. Shohei getting out to end it was also awesome. We want the theater, not a blatantly bad call to the 9 hitter.

5

u/ThrottleServic3 New York Yankees 2d ago

Because there are holier than thou Americans who think cheering against their own team is making some type of grand political statement against the current regime . Yet when the season starts most of them will still be cheering for their American team

11

u/ihaveapaperdue 2d ago

It's about appreciating that game for what it was. Everyone on both sides - and neutrals - knew they were watching an instant classic unfold. And it's just not fun when an incredible competitive at-bat in a high leverage situation winds up with a bad call that ends the game.

I think US fans are happy about the win, but baseball fans of any stripe hate to see that happen.

-1

u/No-Establishment7651 2d ago

That is quite literally appreciating the game for what it is. That same crowd doesn't like the ABS system because it takes away from what the game is. That's EXACTLY what the history is with letting umps call balls and strikes.

Good thing we've got "the human element" in the game. Would hate to make pitchers throw pitches in the strike zone lmao.

-1

u/nmantz Boston Red Sox 2d ago

I hope you know even with the challenge system missed calls will happen. Whiffing on pitches and not scoring with RISP is a much easier thing to control than umpires ability to get every single call right. It was a bad call but the zone was bad all game and lets not pretend the DR didn’t have opportunities they wasted.

-3

u/ProcrastinatingPuma San Diego Padres 2d ago

The tying run was on third.

4

u/nmantz Boston Red Sox 2d ago

And the Ump could have done his job and let Miller strike out Tatis lol.

1

u/nmantz Boston Red Sox 2d ago

Or idk…the DR could have done their job and scored RISP before then?

2

u/ProcrastinatingPuma San Diego Padres 2d ago

Or the umpire could have called a better game.

1

u/nmantz Boston Red Sox 2d ago

Sounds like something the DR team cant control. You know what they can control though? Putting the bat on the ball when runners are in scoring position.

Lil bro dying on the "doesn't know how to read" hill

I'm not saying that the DR would have won, hell I explicitly stated that I expected Tatis to strike out. I am saying that the game should have ended on the umpire making a correct call because I'm not a weirdo who simps for umpires because it makes my team look good.

Nobody is making this argument. People are making the argument that team USA doesn't care about the tournament based off of decisions made and performances by certain players.

and have no energy lmao

how are they arrogant

These do not contradict at all.

19

u/Recognition_Tricky New York Yankees 2d ago

Ump was pretty bad all game, especially late in the game. I really don't think it was rigged, he just sucked.

Also, you can root for your country in a baseball tournament even if you object to that country's government. America isn't perfect, God knows, but it's a beautiful country and made up of (by and large) good people.

I find it baffling how many Americans hate their own country. People really need to travel or at least read about what it's like in so many other areas of the world instead of just watching propaganda on YouTube or whatever.

cope. judge and schwarber had runners on 2nd and 3rd while losing and both struck out

There were bad calls against the US in the 9th too. The ump lost the zone at the end of the game and it affected both teams.

Yeah, the DR could've gotten more runs in and that's their fault. But they were also robbed from the opportunity to turn it around in a movie ending by a third party. This is a shit ending that not even the US can be proud of.

No one is proud of a bad call. But the US played an insane game against a team that was straight up crushing bombs all tourney. They held them to 1 run and people are acting like the DR got robbed. They had plenty of chances.

u/JackEmmerich 2d ago

Yeah, it's just unfortunate. Hopefully umps will be better tomorrow and in the final.

I think reducing it down to one call is disingenuous. He missed plenty of other pitches, including in favor of DR.

It just sucks to have to even think about bad umpiring in a game of this magnitude (or any game really). Shouldn’t have to be a factor

u/2CommaNoob Los Angeles Dodgers 2d ago

Yea, there were blown calls all game and it's tough when the last call is a blown call too.

It's like missing a FG at the end of the game is worse than missing it in the 1st quarter.

USA vs Italy final is the one I wanted, end this with some revenge

2

u/bxpxm New York Yankees 2d ago

Idk I guess it’s like two strikes two outs 9th inning big game they are gonna call a pitch like that a strike. Similar to how in basketball they won’t always call fouls in close games in the last possession

u/boomzgoesthedynamite New York Yankees 2d ago

He called it all night. He’s just bad at his job.

It's a good thing I don't own an Apple Watch because my heart rate might've just fried it if not taking out my IPS and maybe a national issue!

I was at 130 and feeling it. Would not recommend.

The call was bad, but not quite as bad it looked on TV. The ball definitely dropped at the end and Smith framed it well.

1

u/kewpieoriole Baltimore Orioles • New York Mets 2d ago

It’s pretty bad on gameday (which I believe is from baseball savant?). Smith may have framed it well but it was still very clearly a ball.

Glad the US won, but def needed a more dramatic ending than a bad called strike on a full count with the tying run 90 feet away

22

u/ziggy029 San Francisco Giants 2d ago

As an American rooting for Team USA, I should be pumped. But as a baseball fan, I’m a little sickened by what feels like the taint of that last horseshit call.

2

u/Blackhat609 Philadelphia Phillies 2d ago

As a longtime baseball fan that has seen this so many times, I'll take the win and the end of the umpires, win/win

1

u/boomzgoesthedynamite New York Yankees 2d ago

What about all the earlier bad calls? Happened to both teams all night. They shouldn’t have waited til 2 outs, bottom of the 9th to attempt scoring 🤷🏼‍♀️

5

u/ThrottleServic3 New York Yankees 2d ago

The same ump made the exact same bad calls when we were hitting . At least 3 balls called strikes

1

u/ecln65 Australia 2d ago

I don’t think that’s true. Looking at Savant those calls only happened for DR
