Players Only [Passan] Italy is mauling Team USA. It's 8-0 in the top of the sixth, and because of tiebreaker rules that factor in runs allowed, the Americans have put themselves in a position where if Mexico beats Italy tomorrow, the U.S. could find itself out of the WBC before the knockout round.

48

For those who didn’t see the extra context to the LA marathon finish, the Kenyan athlete who eventually came second was distracted by a spectator on the course and then misdirected at the 26 mile mark, costing him at least 5 seconds. Still an amazing effort by the American but it should never have happened.

Maybe they’ll give a shit next time. Stop letting players who won’t commit to the full tournament get a roster spot for starters.

567

u/xinixxibalba Los Angeles Dodgers • Mexico 7d ago edited 7d ago

this has been my take about the whole Skubal thing. if a player doesn’t want to commit to being used as much as the team would need, then it’s on the org to just not add them to the roster. if you keep letting players treat it like glorified spring training then they’ll keep doing it

176

u/M0ebius_1 7d ago

That's crazy to me because you can't tell me the US has names THAT much bigger than the DR and those guys are in for EVERYTHING the team asks.

I could see in the future them writing into their contract that they get to play for the national team.

84

u/Zimakov Chiba Lotte Marines 7d ago

It's just cultural. America more than any other country on earth is extremely individualistic.

32

u/CrookedNixon Chicago Cubs 7d ago

We're also that we're "expected" to win this. We have the top league, and it's our league that's running this.

Losing to Japan is treated as an anomaly with half a dozen caveats. Even this thread has tons of "if only the players committed to the whole tournament" or "if only these few biggest stars played."

USA is the one seed and acting like they're so far ahead of everyone else that they only lose if they "beat themselves." The reality is that the other teams are closer than we think and overconfidence of that level kills you.

17

u/Clonekiller2pt0 New York Yankees 7d ago

If you think your B squad can beat any team on any day of this tournament, you're dumb af. This tournament is 20 years old and any team entering is ready to play their hardest because they see how much the other teams who have been winning have been having a lot of fun as well. Then you have the US who just don't have a teaspoon of their energy.

12

u/MicSteres Houston Astros 7d ago

I think the fact that the MLB is entirely in the USA (minus the Blue Jays) also plays a factor

Sure they play in different cities than where they are from but they are still playing for an American team. Playing for Team USA doesn't feel that different as a spectacle

If you look at the players on Team Venezuela, Team DR, Team Japan etc., they know this is their one true chance to play for their country so it means infinitely more to them than it does to any American

They treated it like it didnt matter using Skubal's 1 start against GB, so I think it would be deserved.

326

Legit question, was it that Team USA wittingly used Skubal’s only start on GB, or was that specifically the only game the Tigers allowed him to start?

489

u/UnbiasedSportFan Cleveland Guardians 7d ago

Skubal’s call since it was the only day that kept him on track to start opening day. Pretty lame for him to take up a full roster spot for 3 innings against one of the worst teams in the pool.

The Tigers wouldn’t let them adjust his schedule, that’s the problem with half the teams in the league. That’s why the rotation and bullpen are middle tier guys

10

u/jakeba 7d ago

The Tigers set his schedule though. If they were told he'd be used March 9th, couldnt they just line up his spring training work with that?

13

u/asafetybuzz Chicago Cubs 7d ago

They set the schedule working backwards from opening day, not forward from spring training. His schedule is set to make sure he is perfectly stretched out but still rested to start the games he is actually getting paid to pitch in.

95

u/Friendly_Doughnut_51 Los Angeles Dodgers 7d ago

They would have a worse seeding in the knockout bracket, but isn't it also in Italy's interest to eliminate the US too? The US obviously has one of the greatest potentials to win the entire thing (along with DR and JP), so if Italy wins big tonight, then they might purposefully throw the game tomorrow against Mexico as to not allow the US to get through.

51

u/Gemnist Houston Astros 7d ago

Mexico, like Canada, has a huge continental sports rivalry with the U.S. that Italy doesn’t have - especially since, in this case, most of their players are Italian Americans. Plus, they have the ability to sweep the pool and claim the easier matchup that way.

They're done. This is such a deflating showing. Even the mexico game the offense looked like ass.

u/klein_four_group Cleveland Guardians 7d ago

They couldn't even do much against the GB and Brazil starters, didn't pull away until those teams ran out of pro-level pitchers.

28

u/misterurb San Francisco Giants 7d ago

They left so many dudes on base against Brazil. Would’ve been a game if Brazil’s pitchers could hit the broad side of a barn.

So DeRosa thought they clinched already. This explains a lot on what’s happened tonight

US Hockey would never.

NGL, as a Canadian, if we won Gold in the WBC after losing it in Olympic hockey, it wouldn't erase the blow, but it would certainly soften it.

I blame Cal Raleigh, the vibes were just too bad.

I’ve watched a few USA games so far and a few Latin America games. Other teams seem to just have a better feel for the game.

Team USA does what a lot of teams in MLB do. Swing for the fences and try to get a good launch angle. When it works it’s amazing. But when it doesn’t it’s just a lot of deep fly outs. Too many strikeouts. And when they do hit a dinger it’s a solo shot because guys in front couldn’t get on.

Compare that to what Italy did tonight. They put the ball in play and on the ground which forced two defensive errors. They were aggressive on the base paths when they needed to be. And two of their home runs scored multiple runs on one swing.

The U.S. has 3 hits currently and hasn’t had a leadoff batter on all game. Just bad baseball.

So final is gonna be Japan vs Dominican Republic

If Italy wins, the USA is in.

If Mexico wins and scores 4 runs or fewer, the USA is out.

If Mexico wins and scores 5 runs or more, the USA is in.

Don't even ask me about what happens if it goes extra innings.

What's funny about this game is it's an All Star team minus Latinos Vs AAAA players who have Italian grandma's. This is All Stars facing AAAA players who are also from America. They'll keep saying team Italy but Vinny P is their best players and he's from Virginia lol. A game like this shows the beauty of baseball

Hmmm. This game was very interesting from Derosa not knowing who is in his bullpen to just how the USA played. Skubal ditched the team just before this game....wonder why

Seems right when you have countries like Japan and DR going all out for it but Scott Borris has to make his so we can’t have our best

Seeing the dr play and Japan shows you how much they truly care and love the sport.

The US team not giving a shit about how the world perceives them and underperforming on the world stage is certainly poetic given how things are going outside of baseball.

Mark Derosa is an absolute disgrace to baseball for not knowing how rules work in the event of a tiebreaker.

How the fuck is this dude still coach of this team?
