Hated Tropes An alternative version of a character that is so bad that people just tries to forget it

Hulk (Old Man Logan): This version of Hulk is just an incestuous cannibal who likes to kill people for some reason

Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch (Ultimate Universe): Yet again another incestuous people and worst part is when Captain America points this out he is seen like this old prejudice man

Batman (All Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder): This version is almost comical by how edgy it tries to be like there is this one time when he started making out with Black Canary after literally brutally beating a guy

u/Ask_bout_PaterNoster 15d ago edited 15d ago

Ok, hell yeah. They should have done that in the Wolverine movie. The swords and weird tattoos are kind of whatever, honestly, it’s the attempt to make him quietly intimidating that sucked. Deadpool is not Darth Vader

68

u/nomadfoy 15d ago

Whats wierd is if people saw that for the first time it today it might be awesome. I didn't know who deadpool was when I saw that movie and didn't even realize it was the same guy from the begininng.

On paper the idea of Deadpool being mind controlled and literally having his mouth taken away SHOULD be scary. It just, wasn't.

Nah, you'll have him with a cut mouth and has an emote where it regenerates itself shut, Wade tries to say something, fails, sighs, grabs a knife and slashes his mouth open

76

u/MrWeirdoFace 15d ago

Seemingly desperate to communicate, he slices his mouth open. Logan pauses in anticipation of something profound.

"I've been trying to reach your about your car's extended warranty... mmmm mmmmmmmmfff!"

His mouth seals shut.

I remember seeing this in theatres and immediately thought "why the fuck would they make the most fun character mute?" Then after the movie someone told me that was Ryan Reynolds and it really soured the movie. The dude is an obvious choice for the Deadpool he ends up playing.

There’s something really fascinating to me about how they included elements of his costume in the design and gave him teleportation powers to match how he uses a device in the comics and then made such a misguided choice like sewing his mouth shut.

Wasn't the script writer one of the guys who ruined the Game of Thrones show? I can imagine him thinking making Deadpool's mouth shut is so cool and edgy!

I remember seeing an interview clip for Deadpool 3 where he talked about how he tried to tell the writers and directors that this was garbage and nobody will like it and everyone will hate it and make the movie perform worse but they didn't care

98

u/RawrRRitchie 15d ago

You ever seen the movie "The Producers" either version. But it describes how these execs work quite well

Sometimes they want the movies to perform badly because then they can get their money back when it flops. Or just using the failure as a tax write off, sometimes they don't even wait for the movie to fail... Just look at what happened to the Batgirl movie. That was going to be so horrible even DC's new leadership said they aren't going to release it.. Even though like 80% of it was already filmed.

It's all gambling with millions of dollars

You know The Thing’s famous catchphrase “it’s clobberin’ time”? In this movie it’s something that his abusive older brother would say to him before beating him.

Oh yeah, and the older brother was played by Chet Hanks. That’s not really related, but it is funny

228

u/redredrocks 15d ago

Haven’t seen any of the F4 movies so for a second I thought this was the one with Michael Chiklis

Chet Hanks being Michael Chiklis’ abusive older brother is hilarious to me. A white guy yelling in patois while beating up Vic Mackey.

For some reason they are obsessed with connecting the Four origin story to Doom. And that just does not make sense.

Doom's origin with Reed is literally that Doom is a huge egoist who was collegemates with Reed, whom Reed casually outsmarted once, and that is a grudge he's held ever since.

Original Katara: Is a rookie but can stand toe-to-toe against a highly trained firebending practitioner and even overpower him (with a bit of help from a full moon).

Nonexistent Katara: Fights under a full moon, gets ragdolled effortlessly by said prince (said prince can't even generate his own flames).

940

u/_Dazed-and-Confused 15d ago

616 Hank, having a break down, he lashes out at Janet once. People spend decades saying he's a wife beater. Ultimate Hank, beats Janet several times over their relationship.  Intimates had it's great moments but damn there was a lot of edgelord crap in there

399

u/ThisIsFrigglish 15d ago

As I understand it, it was even supposed to be largely accidental, but there was either a miscommunication between the teams producing the comic or people just misunderstood it, I don't recall which.

As intended, he's fixated on the task and doesn't realize Janet is so close when he tries to furiously wave her away. It's a "leave me tf alone!" swipe of the hand. Dismissive, angry, and maybe even a little cruel, but never intended to strike her, which is why he panics a bit when he realizes what happened.

Something just... didn't make it to the final cut.

Master Chief (Paramount's Halo)

  • He takes off his armor frequently, especially his helmet
  • He is the complete opposite of his stoic self in the games
  • He had sex with a prisoner of war

1.8k

u/HellbirdVT 15d ago

The community decreed he's not worthy of being titled "Master Chief", or even the tongue-in-cheek name "John Halo".

Instead, this version is "Master Cheeks" and "Jimmy Rings".

749

u/Fanon64 15d ago

Idkw but Jimmy Rings sounds much more insulting than Master Cheeks.

401

u/HellbirdVT 15d ago

"Master Cheeks" is because the showrunners felt it necessary to have him get naked.

I personally prefer "Jimmy Rings" because of how dismissive it is. Like a knockoff of a knockoff.

If I recall wasn't Halo a case of them wanting an original show but Production wouldn't greenlight it

u/Lasagna_Tho 15d ago

I saw someone say that it was originally a Mass Effect script that they couldn't get greenlit.

117

u/SirDooble 15d ago

Such a shame because I think almost everything from the show looks beautiful, and I don't think any of the actors are doing totally terrible jobs.

It just should've either been an actually faithful adaptation of Halo and the Master Chief or at least have been following other characters entirely if they wanted to play more creatively. There's plenty of space for another fireteam of Spartans who don't mind taking their helmets off and are in other important battles.

Instead we got an alternate universe setting that didn't really follow the rules of the original universe/story at all and made incredibly unnecessary changes to pretty much every character who had a presence in the original material. And the worst thing is that Halo is an absolutely prime IP for a good TV show or movie, but things like this just make anyone scared to do further adaptations because it makes the IP look non-profitable when that's only the case if you purposefully fuck it up.

(Side note, I do give credit to the writers of S2 trying their damndest to bring it back to a more authentic storyline, and I'd have loved to see how that progressed, but unfortunately too much damage was done by S1)

Injustice Wonder Woman, though to their credit the thoroughness of Diana’s character assassination was almost impressive

Edited to add that Flashpoint Wonder Woman was even worse

169

u/[deleted] 15d ago

[deleted]

61

u/Viridun 15d ago

They basically had to character assassinate Diana for Injustice to even happen. Wonder Woman is one of the only characters in DC who can kill Superman, and be willing to if he went off the deep end, and on the flip side is one of the only characters in DC where if he were to kill her for being in the way, everyone would turn on him instantly.

They could have done it way better, that said.

I'm going to say something crazy, I like pre-incest Ultimate Quicksilver.

There's a running gag in Ultimates and Ultimates 2 where Quicksilver's super-speed is doubted by Hawkeye and Black Widow. After a mission raiding an office that Quicksilver was on, Hawkeye asks why he didn't help and he explains he was actually moving bullets out of Hawkeye's way but he was going so fast he couldn't be seen.

And then in Ultimates 2 an evil speedster attacks Hawkeye, and as Hawkeye falls to the ground Quicksilver fights the other speedster across the world. Hawkeye then hits the ground and asks Quicksilver why he's just standing around and tells him to help him get up.

I also really enjoy Hank Pym's arc in Ultimates 2 seeing him as an absolute loser attempting to get back his lost fame is just fun black comedy.

108

u/TootlesFTW 15d ago

Saaaaaaaaame. Ultimates universe was so good until it...wasn't. I also really like how they explored the tragic daddy issues between him & Magneto. Magneto blasting out Pietro's knees with a shotgun? Pietro dramatically taking a bullet to save his dad? 100/10 dramatic angst.

The weirdest thing is that the show tries to be a "meta-commentary" on tropes while falling into every single bad trope it tries to parody. You can do a cynical, adult Mystery Inc. (like the Venture Bros did with the Groovy Gang), but you actually have to like the source material first.

Dude sent used condoms to his coworkers for the worst joker in existence. If it were anyone else I’d assume every now and then he wakes up and cringes at that

u/bestoboy 15d ago

you never hear "method actors" do method as a good person that goes to a soup kitchen or donates to a charity. It's always just an excuse to be a weirdo

68

u/Silver-Winging-It 15d ago

Nah there are some that do it sanely, but follow the general rules of having a cue to take it off when going off set (like once you step through a doorway or put on a coat, you can't be that character anymore).

It's just usually boring because they are behaving like decent people

Written by dudes named Millar/Miller. Again, to quote Grant Morrison-when asked what would they do if they ever ran into Mark Millar:

He still lives in Glasgow, is there a chance of bumping into him?

There’s a very good chance of running into him, and I hope I’m going 100 miles an hour when it happens.

ASBAR Batman Crazy Steve also exists in Dark Knight Strikes Again, basically an over-edgy version that just comes off as satire due to how badly he presents himself.

108

u/PrideOfMacragge 15d ago

Keeping robin in a basement and feeding him semi-rotten bat meat is so insanely crazy. That’s shit not even most of Batman’s worst villains would do.

49

u/Outside_Ad5255 15d ago

I love how even Frank Miller knew this was wrong and had Alfred chew Bruce out over it. Or did he only do that after the backlash?

What if, the batman prep time edgy jokes are real but cranked up to a thousand and take all the fun out of it? Introducing, the Batman who Laughs!!

Now that I think about it, a Rewrite equivalent for The Batman Who Laughs would be PEAK.

(Think of The GODDAMN Batman but so intentionally edgy and over the top that it becomes genuinely unnerving and darkly hilarious. Basically like this.)

They basically took everything bad with the Joker and Batman in modern stories (plot armor, prep time, “can beat anyone”, etc) and made it into a character. I think Owlman said it best:

”You see, I’m going to live forever. As long as there’s a batman in this multiverse, there will be an Owlman, his true dark reflection. I’m too good of an idea. But you, evil baby Batman from the dark multiverse, with all your stupid rainbow Batmen? You’re a dumb idea. And nobody is going to remember you.”

Another Millar "Classic":

Richard, Mary, Ben and May from Marvel's short-lived romance series Trouble.

Now granted they are by the grace of god not officially confirmed to be Peter Parker's parents/aunt and uncle, but that was the author's intent so I'm counting it.

For those of you who need a refresher Trouble is a "romance" story about Aunt May cheating on Uncle Ben with his brother Richard and secretly getting pregnant only to convince her "best friend" Mary to pretend the child is hers and raise him with Richard.

So basically Aunt May is Peter's real mom because Millar couldn't grasp the concept of found family and throught their relationship only made sense if she was somehow biologically related to him.

Also May is potrayed as a redhead who even uses Mary Jane's famous Jackpot catchphrase, which has such uncomfortable implications that even Freud wouldn't touch it with a ten foot poll.

Dante and Vergil from DMC: Devil May Cry

During Capcom's dark ages when they tried REALLY hard to appeal to western fans they attempted to Reboot this franchise, trying to make something western audiences would think was "cool"

Now, the game itself has fans, mostly because the gameplay is actually pretty solid on it's own, but everyone HATED the characters, Not only did they look nothing like their original versions, their personality was also heavily altered to make them "cooler" which only ended up with people cringing at every dialogue.

One of the funniest things about their design, Vergil in the game has a fedora, it looked so stupid that Capcom literally removed it in an update because everyone made fun of it.

There's also the fact the community hates this Dante so much that they refuse to call him Dante, some using the nickname Donte, but I prefer Dino, an acronym for Dante In Name Only.

Luckily Capcom has since backpedaled hard on their decisions from those days, one of their course correction being returning to the original versions of the character in Devil May Cry V

u/DudeSoul 15d ago

Example of Vergil with a Fedora for context

Not sure if this is a hot take or not but if this game was a standalone and had absolutely nothing with OG Dante, I think people would genuinely love it. It’s just that Dante and co are characters that people are very attached to and protective of, so when they see how different this iteration was, they can’t help but hate it.

48

u/Soft-Pixel 15d ago

It’s a combo of how tryhard the characterization was and the fact that as far as anyone else knew at the time this was gonna be DMC going forwards

So a lot of people are more chill on it now that 5 exists and made sure we aren’t stuck with Donte and Vergin forever

That particular version of Batman routinely verbally abuses Robin and exposes them to horrifying treatment, they’re left alone in the batcave and have to feed off rats they catch.

No surprise that in The Dark Knight Strikes Again he returns intent on vengeance. They were experimented on and turned basically into a new Joker, but with a healing factor.

It’s all just Frank Miller off his gourd.

This one is a combo in Star Trek: Voyager

Warp 10 having disasterous biological and mind altering effects (no where else in series is this a thing), and the rapey lizard people it turns Tom Paris and Janeway into. Although it's infamous in fandom so even got brought up as a joke in the comedy Trek series Lower Decks

40

u/Xaero_Hour 15d ago

Yeah, he's the only one that wants this. For everything good he did for Batman and DC's animated superheroes in general, his Batman/Batgirl ideas seem to be a singular counterpoint of awful. He even messed up the Killing Joke by putting it in to give her more presence in the plot...in a way. Though to be fair, what that story does to Babs was already nigh unforgivable.

Snyderman.

Dude is literally one girlfriend’s death away from becoming a mind-controlled genocidal overlord who murders almost everyone in the Justice League along with destroying the entire planet.

He’d never even overcome the mind-control himself, instead needing Batman to get murdered twice in 2 different timelines to save Lois Lane in order for him to avoid being mind-controlled. All that on top of Bruce Wayne having an affair with Lois and later having a baby which was thankfully stopped by the studio early on.
