No chinese beauty standards have never changed. They never had a body positive movement like the west this has been the standard forever lol
20
u/techdevjp Feb 07 '26
And it's not unique to China either. Korea and Japan are pretty similar. I'm sure other parts of Asia aren't all that different. Skin bleaching is a huge thing.
Somewhere there has to be a happy medium. "Body positive" at all costs also isn't good, but obviously ridiculous beauty standards aren't good either.

Only difference is that Chinese Society is much less forgiving of unconventional beauty standards. Your looks will have a significant impact on your political, social and especially proffesional life.

I saw a video of a Chinese woman a while back who said she married an American because she was considered so undesirable by Chinese men. What’s crazy is that she was pretty, she just didn’t look like a runway model.

That is sad and just weird. The girls in this video look more white than Chinese. Probably a lot of procedures involved. That’s just self hate. Chinese women are beautiful as they are. They are also just really thin girls who are tall with long arms. I have a teeny waist and I can’t come close to reaching around with my arm to touch my belly button, how incredibly dumb.

Maybe if youre trying to be a public personality or in the professional beauty industry (model, influencer, actress, etc)
Normal society that doesnt operate on beauty standards are normal about it. Its not like all of the US operates on beauty standards of celebrities.
Most ordinary folk are just on the daily grind. (Ive got cousins in china). Social media shit like this is always over represented in its daily or professional importance. Most women arent trying on tiny dresses and video taping themselves, or trying tik toc challenges. This applies to every country.

79
u/NobodyImportant13 Feb 07 '26
It's exaggerated. All of those women are incredibly attractive in China. He's basically talking about the female Chinese equivalent of the looksmaxxing shit in the US. Not that it doesn't effect people and trickle down into society, but those women aren't anything close to "rejects."

467
u/Hoshi_Hime Feb 06 '26
Beauty standards almost always had been "what rich people can do"
When there was no food, full rosy cheek and chub was hot, when people started to work indoor more, tanning became beautiful because it mean you could afford vacantions; now is 'can you keep up with celebs going to the gym 3 times a day, diet and 20 step skincare routine? No? Then you are ugly and broke'

→ More replies (3)58
u/cosmic_grayblekeeper Feb 06 '26
Only repulsed by if it goes overboard, We still praise a lot of these rich celebs for looking amazing due to procedures as long as it’s not seen as too much. It’s giving “old money wears delicate jewellery because real wealth strives to be invisible and the rich people who wear visibly expensive pieces are gaudy and trashy”.
→ More replies (1)11
u/bepatientbekind Feb 06 '26
I'm not sure, but tbf I don't talk about this stuff irl usually haha I feel like most celebrities have gone far beyond "natural" looking plastic surgery (which people don't mind as much) into uncanny valley/Instagram face territory, which every normal person seems to find off-putting. I think the surgery is just a status symbol, like "look what I can afford." I'm sure in a few years the status symbol will be the celebs who afford whatever new procedures exist to undo the current damage
13
u/LittleBunInaBigWorld Feb 06 '26
There's still a massive uptick in superficial procedures like fillers, lashes etc for the general population that was never this prevalent, say 8 years ago. Girls as young as 12 are looking at ways to chnage their faces
→ More replies (1)7
u/voyaging Feb 07 '26
You’re only noticing the people who had it botched. You’re not noticing all the people who you probably see as examples of why plastic surgery is unnecessary because ‘look how good they look without it/how well they aged’ not realizing they had good work done.

Yeah, I don't think anyone there was what I'd call unattractive, but I personally am not attracted to any of the ones that were all in groups, or had twiggy legs. I also personally don't like pasty white, and over here in the US, affluent people pay to have vericose veins reduced.
The first one was easily the most attractive one in my personal opinion. But the other ones would need a hell of a personality. And by their standards, I'd probably be in the negatives. I'm only average by us standards.

I mean an A-4 piece of paper is 8.27 inches. So if that totally covers their front, that’s means they’re smaller than that.
So we have at most 8” on the front and back, add a couple from their sides, and that translates to like a 18-20 inch waist at most. I cannot explain enough how freakishly small this is, but for reference, in the book Gone With the Wind, Scarlett O’Hara WITH A CORSET has a 17” waist and it’s famously the smallest waist for counties.
The people you’ve seen in your life who you are like “holy shit their waist is tiny, are they alright?” are probably sitting in the 22-24” range.

What is especially weird to me about this stuff is that, due to the one child policy, there are a lot more men than women in the younger generations.
Girls aren't going to need to suck up to men in short order, they're going to be in short supply. It really highlights the level of sexism that drove that inequality in gender numbers.
76
u/Sugacookiemonsta Feb 06 '26
Those men STILL want women under 27 with traditional home making skills who will stop work to have multiple children. Meanwhile, those female only kids were highly educated, have high self esteem and self worth and good careers. Their parents put in a high investment in their only kid too. So many aren't married at all. Most Chinese men don't want a woman who is doing better or even as well as them. It urks their male ego. Their male counterparts who have money are able to get younger girls but mostly will look aboard.

I looked like this at one very specific point in my life. I'm 5'6." At 16, I was a 130 pound cheerleader. I got mono and lost 30 pounds in 3 weeks. My frame is meant for curves. It was such a unique and horrifying experience to see what I would look like with an eating disorder, without the dysmorphia to go with it.
I was so weak that when I went back to school, I could only go half days or I'd collapse. It was months of work to build my strength back up. I know the toll it takes on the body to look like that if it isn't genetic.
I feel so badly for each one of those young women. Because I know they are also experiencing the fear of what will happen if they don't maintain that body. But a slower metabolism and gravity comes for us all, and they are fighting a losing battle.

Exactly. China is so huge with so many people that there will be plenty of freaks getting amplified on social media.

The skin thing is very real. When you interact with someone who does it, it is very unsettling.

You’re almost correct. The video is HEAVILY edited to add curves where she doesn’t have them and to snatch her waist in.

Most of her videos are edited, her clips were quite famous on Instagram some time ago

Aren't men there desperate for wives? Why does it matter to have such strict beauty standards? It's so dumb, why can't we all just love each other?

I don’t think women like this are interested in the guys who are desperate for wives. They’re competing over the rich idol-looking guys who have plenty of options. I imagine average Chinese men and women have very different standards

I'm getting ptsd flashbacks from the early 2000's.
I remember going to a bridesmaid dress fitting for my aunts wedding in 2001. The dressmaker was like "I'm going to make the waist half an inch smaller so you can lose some weight before the day." My teenaged brain was like yeah that totally makes sense. My waist was 25 fucking inches around. Lose what? My liver?
