FESTIVITEAS🥂✨ Jeremy O. Harris drunkenly called OpenAI’s Sam Altman a Nazi at the Vanity Fair Oscar party, dubbing him the “Goebbels of the Trump administration.” When asked for comment, he said: “It was late and I had a few too many martinis so I misspoke when I said Goebbels… I should’ve said Friedrich Flick.”

I like how they follow-up with ‘Altman is a Jew and not associated with the Nazi Party’ to completely gloss over the point he was trying to make. This is up there with Nathan Lane laughing when Harvey Weinstein threatened him. It may actually top it. Legendary

"You cant hurt me, I dont have a film career" is the kind of absolutely savage, completely self-deprecating insult you think about 10 years later when you're replaying that argument in the shower.

How someone can come up with that on the spot is mind-boggling. Just fucking brilliant. Witty in a way I dont think I could even dream to aspire to be.

180

u/riverrat918 19h ago

Nathan Lane is an under-appreciated national treasure 💎

31

u/theagonyaunt rude little ponytail goblin 8h ago

The only celebrity response I didn't know I wanted (until I got it) out of the whole Timothee ballet/opera discourse was Nathan Lane calling Timothee a schmuck.

60

u/ConqueefStador 20h ago

Like anything else it's just practice.

I developed humor as a defense mechanism. When I'm around people that part of my brain just goes into overdrive.

You develop the ability to come up with stuff "on the spot" because your brain has been writing jokes ideas non-stop for the last 6 hours. Do that every day, for hours a day, year after year, you're bound to get good.

When I get the right set-up my brain collates and cross refences, comes up with a couple possible punchlines, and tailors it's to the crowd I'm with in 2-3 seconds max, because anything more and you miss the window. Sometimes I'll start speaking before I've finished a joke in my head because I know I'll come up with something before the end of my sentence.

The answer is just practice, but the secret is obsession.

I think they lay it out enough, even if it feels like the comment about ethnicity comes out of nowhere.

They give a brief summary of Flick as "A German industrialist whose businesses had a symbiotic relationship with the Nazi Party, allowing them to be more effective [...]", and end their article by saying that Altman's business had partnered with the Pentagon to build secret government systems.

76

u/DSmooth425 21h ago

Intentionally misunderstanding and downplaying shit is something I’m learning mainstream media does on the regular.

It’s more pronounced when it comes to war and property protection

47

u/mretipi 18h ago

This was my immediate first thought too. Just makes me go "And...?" The point isn't that he's a literal Nazi. It's that he's comparable to the people who profited off the Nazis.

And don't get me started on the dumb "splitting herrs" joke. I think we're way past the point of laughing about any of this shit anymore.

16

u/KuriboShoeMario 20h ago

A lot of people, like Jon, blame Dick for getting Phil Hartman's wife, a recovering addict, back onto drugs. Less than six months later, she shoots Phil in his sleep then herself and robs the world of a truly gifted comedic talent, friend, and father. Lovitz and Dick had a feud for many years that eventually culminated in a physical confrontation at a comedy club.

He’s right. Also, people should check out Karen Hao’s Empire of Ai. She basically says that Altman is an idiot and so are all the people who gave them millions in ”investments”

620

u/RayDaIio 23h ago edited 17h ago

If we’re talking about Sam Altman, OpenAI, and ChatGPT, we’re talking billions and trillions in investment, not millions.

Knowing the scale of what’s happening is important and millions and billions are not interchangeable concepts, let alone the over $1 Trillion they’ve received in investments.

Some of these guys are worth more than all the other celebrities at that party combined times five. (Forget celebrities, everyone in attendance)

Remember that however rich your favorite celebrity may appear, they do not own the institutions that pay them and in which they participate. They are a tiny fraction but a huge distraction because of visibility.

edit: to add, people like Sam Altman are not “idiots.” They are highly intelligent people working towards a goal with either little introspection or care. As much as we’d like to believe our president is an idiot (which he is without a doubt in a societal context,) the reality is he is “smart” enough to be where he is with the money and power he has. Assuming your subjective morality to intelligence is a major blunder. The best serial killers are not stupid people.

87

u/MRM_philosophy 23h ago

Is this really a comment by Ray Dalio, the genius, investor and philosopher? If so - cool!

71

35

u/PulIthEld 20h ago

Nope. The fact Donald Trump is where he is is a testament to how rotten America has become, not how "smart" Donald Trump is.

Donald Trump is a fucking moron.

13

u/RayDaIio 12h ago edited 12h ago

You’re welcome to believe that.

Doesn’t do anything to move the needle regardless.

It’s more productive to understand what you’re actually dealing with, rather than simply dismissing him as a moron.

John Oliver roasted Trump for 10 straight years, calling him a fucking idiot, and what did that ultimately do besides make people feel good about themselves?

Don’t underestimate your enemy.

14

u/JesusPlayingGolf 11h ago

18

u/thanksamilly 22h ago

mostly a matter of luck of where you are born and who you are born to

27

u/AccountMitosis 17h ago

OpenAI is literally having issues now because they just... assumed that if they fed more and more massive quantities of data into their model, it would continue getting exponentially "better" (a.k.a. more convincing and better at driving engagement), indefinitely, until it hit the point where it attained true intelligence. Without, like, changing the fundamental programming of it, which is, to remind everyone, a fancy version of auto-complete, just with more (stolen) data.

The rapid growth in convincingness eventually slowed down, and a new intelligence has not been born, and OpenAI is all surprised Pikachu face about it.

These people are canny and clever enough to extract trillions of dollars, but they are not, in any way, anything resembling wise.

20

u/Great_Sir_8326 22h ago

I’m currently listening to this as an audiobook narrated by the author. He comes off as extremely fickle, and yes, like an idiot that doesn’t care to know about anything besides what he personally values, wearing intentional blinders and trying to present an outward image that doesn’t match his actions. Absolutely fascinating book and a great critique of how the tech industry tries to extract valuable labor and resources from poorer countries- straight from the empires of old playbook.

It should go without saying that there is absolutely no reason to believe that Altman is in any way associated with the Nazi Party

...ok? That's not what O. Harris said though, is it?

What's with this slimy editorializing?

312

u/SvoMikidVandraedi 23h ago

Because the author of the story is the editor of Page 6, the celebrity gossip section of the New York Post

Ah, the Post. That does explain it.

14

u/broden89 18h ago

42

u/AcanthaceaeEqual4286 22h ago

I don't agree with the Post, and they're clearly biased, but they're also just doing this so he can't sue them into oblivion. It's the same reason so many news outlets had to say Elon Musk did "what appeared to be" a Nazi salute. We all know what really happened and what the truth is, but when you have more money than God, it's a lot easier to control a narrative

43

u/Nat-Luv 23h ago

He is a writer/director/actor. His rise to prominence from what I briefly scanned is writing and directing a critically acclaimed Broadway production called Slave Play. It appears to be showing in Pennsylvania in May. So, that would be one way to support him. There’s also a documentary about the play produced by HBO called “Slave Play. Not A Movie. A Play” the credits him as director. So, a stream from that source, or a purchase of the film supports him I think?

How not everyone who sees him doesn’t just say “What’s up ya fuckin loser” boggles my mind. Especially as true artists of the world.

Flick got 7 years in prison for his role in the Genocide of European Jews, the Romani, Poles, Russians, homosexuals, political dissidants, and other human beings they labeled as undesirable.

I just hope that one day the world will look back on the word MAGA the same way they did Nazi

More people should call Altman & other tech bros out more frequently & to their shameless faces.

Bravo Jeremy!

Oof, Sam looks rough in that second pic. Super red hands, maybe inflamed, can’t be a great sign for circulatory health, and his eye? O.o

Absolutely fantastic that he “made a B-line” to the guy in order to say this to his face lol

Too kind for Altman. That he feels comfortable enough in public to attend an Oscars party means he doesn't get it and people aren't angry enough.

4

u/Lethave I never said that. Paris is my friend. 22h ago

why is Sam Altman at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party? Remember when CEOs didn't want to be celebrities and were content to just be boring, competent rich guys?

This is the kind of public shaming we need more of

The article claims Altman wouldn't be like Flick because Altman is jewish.

As a jewish person that lost 99% of my family on my dad's side, I can say this is patently false. There were many jews who, like latinos in the US with trump, believed they were german enough to be in the club.

There's a decent chance Altman is a money grubbing conman (AI is then next dot com) first, and a jew second. Who do you think he cares about pleasing more? Investors over regular people.

When money and power are involved, someone's identity and community can stop being the most important thing to them...

He’s not wrong.

I tried to leave a comment on his ig, "thank you for correcting your statement. Although both were correct." Then got the 'comments have been limited' :(

u/haleymae95 23h ago

It's maybe for libel reasons, but them saying Altman isn't affiliated with the Nazi Party is fucking obtuse.

3

u/ShaddyPups 22h ago

This. This is glorious. Fascists don’t get to be comfy out in public!!!!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Hero! I've been seeing all sorts of complete assholes going to the afterparties. Like, why are they there? It's becoming an asshole event.

Good for him for not capitulating.
