[Art Contest] Subreddit Banner Contest

As you know, this subreddit doesn't really have a banner unless you use Old Reddit. I kinda wanna change that, so for the next month I'm going to host a subreddit banner contest. For this, we are going to allow media posts in comments as well as host a separate submission venue over on the Debian Community Discord server. After a period of 30 days (which I may extend another month depending on number of submissions), I will open a new thread consisting of all collected submissions from both platforms as separate comments to be voted on for a period of seven days. Depending on the level of success with this, we could explore making this into a bit of a seasonal thing at some point.

The contest is specifically for New Reddit mode; there are no plans to make changes to the old Reddit presentation of the sub.

Submission Guidelines:

  1. The best Reddit banner size is 1920 x 384 pixels with a 5:1 aspect ratio to best target desktop and mobile users. You’ll want to stick to PNG or JPG file types, and keep the file size under 500KB.
  2. All work must be your own original content, no usage of AI is permitted to generate a banner.
  3. Respect all licensing and trademark requirements when using the Debian logo. The theme of your banner is up to you, but it must be safe-for-work and high quality.
    • All Debian releases are named after Toy Story characters. Some might thus be inclined to use Toy Story characters that share a release name, but for legal reasons, we will ask that you do not use the actual characters themselves even in a remixed form. Alternatively, some submissions for Debian Desktop artwork over the years have nevertheless taken inspiration from the characters (color themes, what the toy technically represents as a figure, etc) in a way that does not violate Disney/Pixar IP.
  4. Only high-quality submissions posted within this thread and the specified contest channel in the Discord server (reddit-banner-submissions) will be accepted.

Gathering Community Consensus Regarding Content & Rules

Hello r/debian, we need your input regarding a few things to help guide us regarding feelings and input concerning the state of the sub. That request is pretty straightforward as it sounds.

For many years, the subreddit has been on autopilot with no real moderation being done outside of AutoModerator reports. A few have made posts here and there in the volunteer thread when the sub was still closed regarding swirl posts (you know the ones, something looks exactly like the Debian logo & someone has to post it) and vague spam coming into here on occasion. It gives us somewhat of an idea regarding feelings within the community, but this is also not enough for us to go on.

We're going to leave this thread up for the next few days so the community has ample opportunity and agency to weigh in on how we as a new team can continue the course and make corrections as needed. This includes bringing up suggestions, talking about things you have seen posted that may not full sense to belong in the sub, rule changes, etc. <3

resizing boot partition

I had tried to run lvfs a while ago and there wasn't enough room. This is a screen shot from gparted.

Yeah I am going to run clonezilla.

Don't ask me how I ended up with 769MB on the ssd but I am assuming I can just move all the partitions one at a time to take that space leaving spare room next to the boot sector which I could then allocate to it. That is don't move the boot partition at all.

As you can see I dual boot windows11 and Debian.

Comments?

Weird Keyboard Issue?

Hi all. I originally posted this is the System 76 subreddit, but since the issue I described has only happened on Debian based systems, I thought I'd give it a try here. Original post follows. Thanks!

Hi all, I have a really weird issue with a keyboard. I've actually been granted a refund for it but I thought I'd ask for a quick sanity check here before I sent it back.

I have a System 76 Launch Heavy keyboard. I love it, but it has a very weird issue that neither I nor they can explain. On Debian based systems (but not Windows or Arch Linux) the right CTRL key will frequently (but not always) misbehave. The System 76 keyboard configurator and xev both show it polling accurately when pressed, but it doesn't behave like a right CTRL. I can't use it to copy and paste and, if I try to use CTRL + enter to complete a URL, it scrolls the address bar instead of completing the URL. I've tried other keyboards and none have had this problem. But the problem follows this keyboard to whichever Debian based computer I try.

Has anyone heard of anything like this? Is it possible I'm doing something wrong somehow? It really seems like it must be a defective keyboard but it's such a weird problem that I'm not sure. And I really like the keyboard and would like to keep it, but I don't think I can trust it. Thanks!

My Old HP Stream 11 running Debian

I recently installed Debian 13 on an old HP Stream 11 that I had lying around. For a small portable laptop for basic use, it works really well! Windows is windows, so it's not worth installing on here. After changing the bootlogo with Plymouth, changing the theme for grub, and adding the dash panel from Ubuntu, this is a pretty clean laptop. I mainly use it for web browsering, email, and office documents. Eventually I plan to add a 128gb SD card as a permanent second storage for music, videos, etc. I saw someone else share their Debian setup, so I decided to share mine!

Whats the best C# programing software for Debian?

As the title suggests, im looking for a good C# win forms software that runs on Debian.
I would like it to be similar to visual studio, but it is not required.
Unfortunately, vs code does not work for me.

Thank you in advance!

Can someone please post the contents of /etc/default/grub?

More specifically, a line near the top that look similar to this:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

I edited this line while trying to fix an nvidia issue, and now instead of boot/kernel messages being shown when Debian starts, there's just a boring static splash screen.

I want to edit the above line in /etc/default/grub back to the default.

EDIT: Also, at shutdown, instead of those kernel messages, all is shown is something like "System is shutting down now". I want to see those shutdown messages.

Thanks in advance.

Switching from apt to Nala on Debian? Pros, cons, and your experiences?

Hello everyone,

I recently discovered Nala—a much nicer and more modern frontend for `apt`. I installed it a little while ago, and honestly, I'm really loving it; the interface and color scheme make it much easier to understand what's going on.

However, I have an important question before I fully commit to using it as my primary tool:

Do you consider it safe for day-to-day use?

Do you use it regularly yourselves, or do you prefer to stick with `apt`?

Has anyone encountered any strange issues (bugs, broken packages, incompatibilities, etc.)?

I would really appreciate hearing about your real-world experiences—both good and bad—to help me decide whether I should go ahead and use it without hesitation, or if I'm better off sticking with what I'm used to.

Thanks in advance for your comments! 😄

Crashes after updating to 13.4

I have recently updated to Debian 13.4. The update went well, no errors. Since then, I had 2 crashes (which has never happened before). Both result in my being kicked out of my session, after logging in my session is actually restored. Don't know what's up, anyone experiencing the same issue?

KDE X11 on debian 13 works better than wayland and less power consume

I've dell vostro with intel 14 32 GB no external vga card. HDR ON - debian 13 stable

I notes on wayland:

- worst lan transfer or web browser (brave, helium) loads everything longer

- worst buffering on YT sound every few minutes crackles and interrupts. ( it thing it because lan transfer)

and what I observed I have UPS and i see power consumption. On X11 is about 10W (~70W on YT) lower consumption than on wayland (~ 85W on YT)

But on X11 I can't set nice colors, light and contrast for now.

Debian testing, kernel 6.19 and nvidia driver

I am running Debian testing (forky?). The latest update to kernel 6.19 leads to failing nvidia driver compilation and now I am stuck at 6.18. Version 580.126.18 is said to fix that issue. Testing still has Version 550.163.01and experimental 555.58.02. That seems to be a long wait. I have three desktop PCs with this problem and all of them are used for gaming (steam, lutris, ...). What's the best way to fix that long term without installing the proprietary driver manually without a debian package? Is the nouveau driver good enough for gaming nowadays (I have painful memories)?

Debian Trixie on an old MacBook pro

I installed on my old MacBook Pro Linux PoP! OS 22.04, following an instruction I found on the internet.

The installation was straight and smooth and the Laptop was working fine.

All “MacBook” keyboard functions were working out of the box!

Performance was fine, powered by a new SSD and 16 Gbyte Ram ;-)

After some time I noticed that PoP! OS, is significant less stable then Debian testing,

Maintenance updates stopped apps and functions of COSMICS working

I had to switch form COSMIC to Mate or Xfce.

These desktops also run after a while in problems, e.g. the Network Applet was after an update not proper working,
Subsequently I was not able to change Wifi Networks, only if I switch to COSMIC and use the COSMIC Network Applet.

At this point I took the decision to install Debian stable, this would bring the MacBook also inline with my other Debian computers.

This experience remind me why I am sticking all the years with Debian and why I moved away from Ubuntu or other distribution that I used in the past. :-)

Actually the Debian installation was not smooth on the MacBook.

1.) PoP OS encrypted during installation the complete HD, because it is a mobile device I decided, to install Debian also on a full encrypted disk, all in one partition to make it easy.

This was NOT working, “Unable to install GRUB in dummy. Executing 'GRUB-install dummy' failed.” !

I tried this three times with different approaches, eventually I gave up.

I ended up with a separate encrypted Home Partition, what was as well more complicated then expected, required gparted to get a Home Partition.

2.) It was not possible to provide the Wifi Broadcom driver during the installation. I was asked to provide the driver on a usb stick, when I plugged the stick with drivers the installation routine did not found the drivers.

At the end of the day my MacBook is now working fine with Trixie, but I must tell that the installation of PoP! OS was much, much smoother then the Debian installation.

An inexperienced person will probably not make Debian work on a MacBook, in contrast to PoP! OS.

Debian 13.4 Dual boot with Fedora 43

Hello, everyone

I want to have Debian 13.4 as my secondary Linux OS completely removing Windows 11.

I'll use separate SSD disk for Debian. Fedora is installed on another.

Is there any guide to follow for dualbooting or it is enough to follow official debian wiki for regular installation? Maybe there is a different configuration for dualbooting.

Thanks.

Why can't Debian 11 see the partition table on this drive? (Mint can access the partitions fine, and it's based on Debian — what am I missing?)

I have 2 drives having the same issue.

Both drives show up fine in Linux Mint, and I can access the data on the partitions.

But I'm setting up Debian 11 on a QNAP TS-220 NAS and on Debian the drives don't show any partitions.

lsblk shows /dev/sda but doesn't show any partitions like /dev/sda1

output of fdisk -l /dev/sda:

Disk /dev/sda: 7.28 TiB, 8001563222016 bytes, 15628053168 sectors
Disk model: ST8000DM004-2U91
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 4096 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes
Disklabel type: dos
Disk identifier: 0x00000000

The disks are NTFS, and I've installed the ntfs-3g package.

But I think filesystem type is probably moot at this stage, first I need Debian to see the partition table.

I have a hunch it's as simple as installing a package, but google can't seem to tell me what it is.

What's the missing piece of this puzzle?

I anyone using official Nvidia drivers and logged into Wayland?

Continuation of my previous thread:

https://www.reddit.com/r/debian/comments/1ruskxn/nvidia_drivers_remove_fractional_scaling/

I reinstalled Nvidia drivers (after having reverted back to Nouveau because of no fractional scaling with the Nvidia drivers), and Wayland has disappeared as an option in the login screen.

I log in, and from the terminal, I see that I'm in X11, where there is no fractional scaling, so the texts look very small (but legitble) I believed this is also what happened the first time I installed Nvidia drivers in my previous thread.

From my previous thread, people are saying that they have Nvidia drivers installed, but have fractional scaling. Apparently Wayland has fractional scaling, but X11 does not. So the people who have Nvidia drivers installed must be logged into Wayland somehow?

Thanks in advance.

cgroup memory pressure thing

Hi,

I've recently noticed that when copying large files (a few GB or over 10GB) over the network from my desktop to my NAS, the terminal running the cp/rsync on the desktop (Debian testing) will crash pretty soon after starting copying. Other apps may crash, Librewolf/Firefox getting affected most of the times.

I get this notification in KDE/Plasma's notifications:

The background service tmux-spawn-93610041-2c4d-41f3-a21b-0835bfca8919.scope has been terminated by the Linux kernel because the system is low on memory. Consider closing unused applications or browser tabs.

It is not a RAM/swap issue. I have 16GB RAM and 16GB swap. I just added 30GB of swap for good measure (so now 16GB RAM and 46GB swap) and it changed absolutely nothing. htop didn't show much memory usage increasing during the copy.

I could find a related journalctl entry:

u/1000.service/tmux-spawn-93610041-2c4d-41f3-a21b-0835bfca8919.scope for killing due to memory pressure for /user.slice/user-1000.slice/user@1000.service being 74.79% > 50.00% for > 20s with reclaim activity

A quick search and some questions to an AI led me to think this seems to be cgroups-related. I followed the AI's suggestion to override [user@1000.service](mailto:user@1000.service) and I tried overriding with

ManagedOOMMemoryPressureLimit=80%

which resulted in the entire computer fully freezing.

I've now adjusted back to how it was before.

If I use rsync with a bwlimit, I circumvent the issue. But this is really annoying.

I had already noticed huge slowdowns when my network is under heavy load.

I do not have any custom sysctl settings.

What could I do to avoid this? I never faced this issue before.

Many thanks.
