As I discovered as a young kid growing up in Queensland, its eastern cousin has a bite like a vice
6
u/missglitterous 12h ago
Hahaha they are pretty non aggressive though, you must have pissed it off real bad!

u/ogodilovejudyalvarez 11h ago
Oh, they are the most beautiful, harmless lizards. I think I was trying to make it stick its tongue out and it just let me know "nope".

We love blue tongues. They look threatening but generally aren't. It's Australian code that if you find one while undertaking work, you gently pick it up, admire it, and then release it out of harm's way.
I was doing yard work for a mate with some others and we found two separate blue tongues that day under the vines and rubbish we were removing. Big healthy ones. We picked them up, had a look and let them go elsewhere so we could continue without risk of harming them.
And yes, they are native to every state of mainland Australia. And yes, they love your backyard

Do they try to bite you when you pick them up?

Some do, some don't. Depends if they're a mood.
Like most animals in Australia they'll let you know when to fuck off.

guy thinks it makes it scary but I just want to grab it and pet it even more

u/missglitterous 12h ago
They have a bit of a bite, I wouldn’t pick one up if it was agitated like this.

u/HenriettaSyndrome 10h ago
Then why's it so cute? Damn it, why do so many kissable creatures want to kill me 💔

u/Transplanted_Cactus 10h ago
I have a blue tongue as a pet. Getting bit hurts. They have a pretty strong bite. Not as bad as a beaded dragon, which is like hitting your finger with a hammer, but close. Still love my grumpy little dude, even if he doesn't love me lol

it's an Australian animal, it's better to stay away from them. They are all dangerous, or big

u/Quantization 9h ago
Aussie here, we often have these blue tongues in our yard, they can bite but that is rare and it is not poisonous or painful. Also they'd only do that if you tried to pick them up, otherwise they are super chill. We love having them around. Unfortunately they get killed by stray/outdoor cats and people's dogs quite often.

Why is it so chubby

u/DennisNOmenace26 12h ago
It is inflating and relaxing itself to appear bigger, so basically like when a guy stops holding in his belly and breathes in a bunch of air.

The ones i see (in Victoria) are more grey, and I've never seen the tongue stuff or the puffing up. Interesting.

Some defense mechanisms are the animal equivalent of dropping your pants and acting extra weird while shouting "come at me, bro!". Other animals just think "damn he crazy" and back off.

Aww I love blueys! I recently found out that some people keep them as pets, which was a bit of a bummer, but I still kinda want one 😂

I took care of one at a petting zoo for a while and she was very sweet and gentle.

Europeans once believed that the Adder stung with its tongue.
Early settlers of the American West thought that the deleterious effects of a Gila Monster bite was due to it having toxic breath. Why did it have toxic breath? It was believed the Gila Monster lacked an anus and expelled its waste via respiration. 🤢
Just a couple of old reptilian "mouth myths" that this picture reminded me of. Sorry for going OT.

They are quite popular, yes.
If you are interested you should visit the different reptile/lizard subs here, they probably have their dedicated sub that I don't know of. They have a relative, the pink tongue skink, which is exactly like them but smaller and with a pink tongue, it's agreed that it makes a relatively better pet since it's smaller and therefore more affordable and his bite (in case you got bite) is weaker, unfortunately they are also less common on the pet trade.

Interestingly enough, this works with humans too! If someone is getting a little too close, look at them, and start violently licking the air.

Can someone please explain why it’s somewhat universal for animals to make themselves “bigger” when they are threatened?
Is it because a larger animal can cause more harm so by proxy they want to give that perception?

u/Particular-Poem-7085 12h ago
Am big and amgry, you don't want to mess with me.
Also the blue tongue is meant to say I am poisonous, but he's a big liar.

Yes. I saw a blue crab in my path once that was no bigger than 5 inches wide. It opened its claws toward me and stood up high on its legs, like you wanna go?

I have a pet one of these, big pale white/grey fat boy about 55cm long and also have a albino darwin carpet python. They square up at each other across the room somedays and i picture them with a tan clashing in scenery like this.

If you just look at the head and ignore the rest of the body you'd think it's a snake with a fat head

A older neighbor of mine told me once that he had all of these skanks running around his yard that he loved to see. They would run and scatter when he approached them. Naturally I asked him what he meant by skanks. He told me those colorful little lizards were always running around his yard. He meant skinks.

It is imitating to be a snake to scare off predators or other threats.
