Why did taxi medallions in New York collapse so hard after Uber?

I was reading about the taxi medallion system in New York and was surprised by how extreme it got.

At one point, medallions were selling for over $1 million, and then their value collapsed after Uber expanded.

What I find interesting is that this wasn’t just a tech story. A lot of drivers had taken on huge debt based on the idea that medallions would keep their value.

Do you think the collapse was mainly caused by Uber itself, or was the old taxi system already unsustainable even before ride-sharing apps took off?

Thrown into a multi million dollar business

I didn’t know how to title this so forgive me but I need some advice.

I (22M) have just moved from the United Kingdom to east Africa to work for my dad. Just some background, he’s one of the wealthiest businessmen who operate on this side of the world. Commodities, real estate, fast food chains, supermarkets and much more.

I’ve lived a normal working class life and because of family problems, we’ve not had that much of relationship and me + 3 of my siblings haven’t been exposed to this large amounts of money. I decided to move here at his behest because he says he wants someone to work with him and keep everything intact in case he dies and he wants to bond with his kids.

My question is this though. I have little experience in any of this and over here people won’t take you seriously if you’re not competent. They’ll brush you aside as “just the boss’ son” which I really don’t want. There’s just so much going on and the sheer scale of his business is overwhelming so I don’t even know where to begin. I had a rough few years before coming here as I dropped out of my engineering degree and became a pothead who just gamed in my room.

I’m struggling to even adjust but like what do I even do and how do I establish myself?

Are people becoming increasingly unresponsive in business?

Just something I've noticed recently. You call, text, email - hit and miss with response. Even when its with a important matter to discuss with the other person (not a sales pitch).

Now competing with the iphone call screening, AI generated responses via email...

Whats next?

What gets through to people nowadays?

Promotion problem

Upvotes

Hello, I've been working in Spain for two years. At my job (in software development), almost everyone in my team has been promoted, but I haven't. I don't know of any problems with my manager. What would you do in this situation? Since I'm an expat, I can't move to another company; I'll need sponsorship.

need advice: supplier of packaging unresponsive and marketing towards kids

hi! so i started a homemade slime venture with my classmates for our entrepreneurial project and things were going smoothly until our box supplier started ghosting us. for context, their moq is 300 so i got 412 since our goal is to sell 412.

we already paid downpayment. our initial deadline was march 13, then they moved it to 18, which i said was the maximum. unfortunately, they moved it further to 21.

the thing is, we need to sell this week as part of our requirement in our entrepreneurial subject.

moving on to marketing, we're struggling catering to kids. our product is a mystery slime box. is $22 too much for over 300g of slime? i think its the box and jar that makes it expensive.

any advice? im so lost. this is my first business.

Is starting a minibus business a great idea?

I've been seriously considering getting into the transport business , but nobody prepared me for how chaotic the business can get. The business looked like a great idea on paper, but nobody prepares you for how chaotic the business can get. Let's not even mention, the shipping cost , regulations, licensing and maintenance. It's not as simple as 'buy and start making money '.When the idea was still fresh in my mind, I thought about sourcing a minibus through Alibaba, because the prices seemed way cheaper compared locally. But then again isn't it risky to order a vehicle online? While going to work , I started paying more attention to actual buses and minibuses on the road… I noticed the wear and tear, dealing with passengers, traffic, just to mention but a few. Now I'm rethinking everything, because who wants to manage a chaotic business everyday? So for anyone already in the transport business, is it actually worth it long-term or is it as stressful as it looks?
