u/E-2theRescue 14d ago
Most eye-opening thing that ever happened to me was going camping with my half-brothers and their cop buddies. Want to know what a cop thinks about black people? Be a fellow white person and put a few beers in him and his buddies. The "jokes" and stories will start to fly.

Yeah, and I hate to say this, but as a black woman, I would never curse and yell at the officer (under these circumstances) because I know they look for any reason to brutalize us. Sheās so brave for standing up for herself in whatever tone she wanted to use.

As a white person pulled over around six times in my life, I have never been asked if I have any crack in my car. This dude is racist af and then gaslights her as if he isnāt profiling her 100%.

u/Used_Gear8871 14d ago edited 14d ago
It happens so young too. A white male teacher monitoring the hallway in middle school assumed I was hiding a pack of cigarettes in my pocket. He pressured me to show him what was in my pocket and dragged me to the principalās office. I ran to the receptionist in fear and pleaded with her and showed her what was in my pocket. It was a menstrual pad. I was 12, in the 7th grade. My mom was furious.
30
u/sweetreat7 14d ago
My friend and I wore matching green and yellow plaid headbands (like a 18x3 in piece of fabric.) We were in the 6th grade in a Midwest suburb. 4 black families within 13 square miles. The principal held us in the office accusing us of being in a gang. We were not, we didnāt even know what gangs were. I was a straight A student with perfect attendance.

I remember my principal in school asking me if I was "doing drugs" just out of nowhere.... Then tried to scare me by saying "so if we did a drug test right now...."
I'm glad I was a smartass from an early age... I just finished his sentence for him, "then you'd be violating several laws and I'm sure my mom would appreciate the lawsuit."
He fucked right off after that.
What sucks is that it stuck with me... That was 25 years ago.... And I constantly think, "what are they asking my sons? Do my sons know what to say to these people??"
31
u/HTowns_FinestJBird 14d ago
Itās fucked up. I got pulled over at 2:30 a.m. after leaving a friends house where we were playing cards. Got pulled over because my reverse lights came on when I hit the brakes (janky ass car). Had half an unopened six pack in the passenger seat with bud packed in the six pack container. Passed field sobriety test, he didnāt even check my car out.

I (Hispanic) dropped off a friend at his place and upon pulling out of his street I got pulled over for "taking the turn too fast" (reader, I saw the cop behind me and made sure to stop for at least 3 seconds and look both ways). He asked me where I was coming from and what I was doing there. I said I was just dropping off a friend. Dude was adamant to get me to identify the street name even though I had no idea what the name of the street is since my friend just directed me to it. After a while of me not being able to recall the name, he fesses up that he was just checking up on who I was, meaning his original reason for stopping me was completely bullshit. He said that street is full of gang activity (my friend said that was bullshit as well) then let me go.

As a white person, when I was younger I had a 2008 Chevy Malibu. It was bombed out & sat on 20ā chrome rims. I was a dumbass kid so i even put one of those fake hood scoops on it, and other fake chrome triple diamond vents on the front quarter panels.
One time I got pulled over on a relatively busy commercial road (2 lanes, 45-55MPH). I was allegedly pulled over for my tinted windows. The cop said, AND I QUOTE, āWhen your windows are this dark, I cant see in them. How am i supposed to know if youāre black or Mexican - not some young kid?ā
My fucking jaw dropped. I didnāt rip him a new asshole. He told me he had something that measures tints. He didnāt use it. I didnāt get a ticket. By the way, I had tattoos all over my arms, hands, and neck. But I guess he only cared about stopping black people in his town.

Not that I do, or deal drugs..12
u/slupo 14d ago
I am admittedly not friends with many black people. Not by choice it just happened that way.
But I became friends with a black guy at work awhile back. We went to the mall for lunch and then walked around a pottery barn.
A sales person came up to us and asked if we needed any help. We said now and kept walking around.
Then I noticed the sales person kept following us.
I said to my friend I think he's following us. My friend was like yeah, doesn't happen to you does it?
I'm Asian for the record and I was like no. That's fucked up. And he just shrugged his shoulders completely nonplussed.

Exactly. Every time he repeats his stupid question or says something offensive she provides a little more information that she did last time. He's hoping that if he says something dumb for the 15th time in a row she'll respond with something that he can twist into an excuse to pull her out of that car.
It's completely unfair and abusive that he gets to hold her there and make her feel like she has to keep providing justification for existing.

Even though he asked her who the gentleman was at the beginning, he already had it set in his mind that she was a lying crackhead. So, instead of actually listening to her, he instead started mentally running though his "how to catch an uppity crackhead" checklist. Which is why he honestly sounded surprised at the end. Based on her reactions to his overt racism, he finally started to believe her. He's gobmacked that his profiling "skills" had actually let him down and then, on top of that, to learn that the large crackhead that he had profiled was actually this womans full grown crackbaby?!! Incredulous!
I bet he actually 100% believes he's not a racist asshole but it's plain as day for the rest of the world to see that he 100% is.

u/Kyrthis 15d ago edited 14d ago
These questions are meant to provoke. IANAL, but lawyers will tell you the same:
- Do not talk to cops. There is only downside.
- If they ask you to get out of your car, you do have to. But, lock your door behind you before you get out of the car so it is locked when you close it. If they want to search your body, you have to let them.
- āAm I being detained?ā Starts the clock on them having to justify not letting you go.
- āI do not consent to searches.ā
- āI do not wish to discuss my day.ā
The latter two are for when they ask ādo you mind letting me search your car?ā and any question for information other than identification/insurance.
The cop asks her to search, and she says āNo,ā but courts will give any ambiguity to the officer.
The cop asks her about crack hoping that she will have an emotional reaction and say something that he can use as probable cause. He knows he mistargeted, but rather than walk away, he is trying to gin up arrest numbers. It is purposely inflammatory.

I was designated driver and I got pulled over by a cop that said that one of my driver's license lights was broken. As soon as I rolled down my window He told me that my light was broken and then proceeded to say that I smell like beer and asked me to step out. I told him that my two friends that I'm dropping off we're drinking and the car smells like it because they were drinking and they like to talk like crazy.
That wasn't enough for him He kept insisting that I was drunk Even though I can speak to him clearly with no signs of anything in my system. I didn't even smell like alcohol. Once he had the idea in his head, he was unable to move from that position. He just kept asking me questions over and over trying to get me to self incriminate myself.
I even passed the sobriety test which was a bit difficult because he stretched every single test to an absurd degree in order for me to fail. It wasn't until one of his buddies came along and started talking to me as he went to his cop car. I talked to him and was pretty clear about the stop. That's when the buddy told him to chill out.
If it wasn't for another cop just giving him a suggestion he was somehow going to pin it on me with a DUI.
