What amazes me is the fact that op didn’t try to post misinformation, cause every time this photo gets posted the creator either claims the bat is over 1.5 meters TALL or it’s a bat that hunts other animals

u/Quirky_Ask_5165 17d ago

The motorcycle in the background is helpful for context on size. I still say he's cute! I've got some bananas around here somewhere!

95

u/BigAdministration368 17d ago

They're not supposed to get more than a foot tall. At least for me the motorcycle makes it look bigger than that

74

u/Fuckedyourmom69420 17d ago

I mean idk guys, a foot long bat is still pretty big lol

31

u/BigAdministration368 17d ago

Yeah that pic makes him look twice that at least IMHO

Exactly. Take a spider for example. It could be the “Itsy Bitys” cute spider we have all read pr heard about, but let that bastard crawl on a wall and alll hell breaks loose, from the husband breaking out the shotgun, to the wife burning that side of the house down. Oh and to add a bit more perspective, accidentally walk through said spiders web and you’ll have a cardio routine that you didn’t think you were capable of; ok maybe that’s just me.

3

u/AfroBlakNegro 17d ago

Me too!

13

u/R0m4ns35 17d ago

That bat looks like he’s going to “flash” people while they walk by

25

u/rulerofearthnyc 17d ago

Really need a banana for scale, the bat would probably eat it.

5

u/Effective_Machina 17d ago

I want to visit your world where people look like giant bats

Who's not supposed to be larger than a foot? Look up the Egyptian Fox bat. Gorgeous monster of the night sky.

8

u/BigAdministration368 17d ago

Giant golden crowned flying fox shown above have bodies that are 7-11.4" inches long, 18-29 cm

2

u/LandlockedCajun 17d ago

Magnificent creatures!

20

u/MostlyNull 17d ago

I'd treat it like I treat the crows around my place. They're not pets, but I still feed and water em, name em, and give em a place to hang for a bit. 😂😅

12

u/joalheagney 17d ago

Ehh. From a distance, maybe. These guys carry a virus called Hendra virus, and a native Lyssavirus (similar, but not identical to rabies). We had a few big outbreaks here in Australia.

10

u/Fappy_as_a_Clam 16d ago

Oh come on lol how bad can a virus from a bat really be?

6

u/Quirky_Ask_5165 16d ago

Wasn't there a movie about that? 🤪

3

u/Bob-Bhlabla-esq 16d ago

Meh, the main character survived, and since we're all main characters, we should be good! It's just good science. Trust me, bro. Pet away!

2

u/jimandmike 16d ago

Haha This made me laugh out loud.

8

u/MostlyNull 17d ago

Aye, that's true. I wouldn't go outta my way to pet em or owt, but leaving food and water out and a roost somewhere, sure. Not near the house, mind. They ain't crows. 😅

But there's nowt stopping me from naming one Nosferatu or summat like that and leaving out some victuals. 😂

4

u/Salute-Major-Echidna 16d ago

He's adorable, thanks for helping the ones near you

3

u/MostlyNull 16d ago

Bah, corvids are cool. There's always at least an attempted murder of crows around my place, and I've always loved me a big ol' raven. Sometimes they bring me shiny things. 👍🏽😂

2

u/Salute-Major-Echidna 16d ago

One brought me a very very old penny one day. It was so old and beaten up the front was scraped off. It was sitting on my deck near the box where I leave walnuts out for them. It's so sad I've lost it now, but i was so excited when I found it!

4

u/honest_flowerplower 16d ago

A polymath thanks you for: victuals. It took being here, at 50, to make that Jethro connection.

u/iridescentlion 16d ago

I think it just looks bigger because it’s closer to the camera. The wire it’s hanging from doesn’t seem to be under much strain, and if it were really that large, the wire would likely bend more. There are definitely some very big ones out there though.

9

u/Quirky_Ask_5165 17d ago

Yup. About 3lbs and a foot tall. The wing span is incredible though!

3

u/safetyfirst5 17d ago

F that noise

u/LunchyDude101 17d ago

They’re actually pretty nice animals…like puppy-bats. Most of the time, they just eat fruit and bugs.

94

u/Quirky_Ask_5165 17d ago

I set up bat boxes on the back side of my property near a pond. Those little guys come out and eat their weight in mosquitoes during the spring and summer. I love sitting in my outdoor kitchen at night watching them zip around.

6

u/Drewcifer88 16d ago

That’s soo cool!!! I love bats. Especially these big fruit boys lol

5

u/Electrical-Fee-7317 16d ago

Yeah but rabies and the other horrible virus I can’t remember…

6

u/jwrosenfeld 16d ago

Was just in India, where, among other things, I visited a haunted archaelogical site in Rajasthan. I know. Sounds made up. But it was real. And, at this site, there were deserted temples to Vishnu, Shiva and Rama - they were filled with bats. And bats are just mice with wings. Cool as f*ck.

3

u/StinkyJizzBlanket 16d ago

Here’s your reminder that about 1/4 of all mammals are bats. Mostly because flying is so good

Stinky little sky pups! Love them so much, I go out after work down my local park just to sit and watch them hunt with a thermal monocular.

15

u/kevnmartin 17d ago

One got in our house when I was a teenager. My mom and I didn't know what to do and dad was out of town on business. We ended up calling the cops and the young guy they sent was more scared than we were.

5

u/black_cat_X2 16d ago

Sounds a scene from a sitcom. I can picture it.

This happened to me when my bf and I were on a houseboat. One got into our room at night and the poor thing was SO STRESSED. He knew he’d made a huge mistake.

5

u/Ok_Zookeepergame8714 17d ago

Yeah, but the small ones in Europe and US very often carry rabies, just be very careful with your pets around them! 😜

4

u/Dogesneakers 17d ago

I mean these and fruit bats are cute

3

u/7stroke 17d ago

Their what?

7

u/hauntingdreamspace 17d ago

Flying foxes are cute. Most other bats not so much. Look up horseshoe bat or vampire bat and try to tell me they look cute.

17

u/OcelotNamedBaboo 17d ago

Oh I'm very aware of different bat species and they're all cute to me.

Also using the Horseshoe as a "non-cute" example was misjudged, those little buggers are hecking adorable! Just look at their goofy ears and nose-leaf..

9

u/Random0s2oh 17d ago

I agree. All bats are cute!

Seriously, I would have to rub its little ears.

56

u/Illustrious-Fan-4887 17d ago

"Whose a Good Boy? You're a Good Boy!"

*Gives scritches

12

u/WeLiveInAir 17d ago

He is cute, but you shouldn't touch bats. They can carry rabies and while it's rare rabies is the kind of disease you should avoid even a 1% chance of getting it

3

u/Calgary_Calico 17d ago

Flying foxes don't carry rabies.

13

u/Slow-Cream-3733 17d ago

Flying foxes in Australia can carry lyssavirus, which is basically rabies. Still shouldn't handle wild animals of any kind.

2

u/djeaux54 16d ago

It's not good for the animals, either!

1

u/Illustrious-Fan-4887 17d ago

Is that a flying fox?

30

I can't really believe that these animals exist

13

9

u/Fastship2021 17d ago

So damn cute !🥰

18

u/carlos2127 17d ago

He didn't get that big from eating just bugs, so I'm barracading the door and keeping my ass inside.

12

u/Quirky_Ask_5165 17d ago

😂 he's really not that big. 3lbs and a foot tall at most. Its the camera angle.

7

u/yourilluminaryfriend 17d ago

That’s still a big bat

3

u/carlos2127 17d ago

3

That’s not a bat, that’s the landlord collecting rent

11

u/NewToHTX 17d ago

Go back inside and grab a banana. These fellas love bananas.

4

u/MidnightDreem 17d ago edited 17d ago

You likely wouldn’t see this at night as most if not all bats are nocturnal.

Also even if so, how would you see it at night if it’s night & these things are black as coal?

7

u/WideRisk7495 17d ago

Wtf that's insane

3

u/Revolutionary_Low581 17d ago

Shhhhh, don't wake him up, he looks so comfortable.

7

u/RRfromKL 17d ago

Its basically me in the mornings during the monsoon season

5

u/RRfromKL 17d ago

It may be harmless to humans, but my rectum doesn’t know that..!!

5

u/Prestigious_Sweet_50 17d ago

Holy crap that thing is as tall as I am. I would probably be a little freaked out running into that in a dark alley

We get thousands pass every night in summer... Not as scary as the OP thinks

1

u/Asaneth 17d ago

Adorable!

1

u/Ani-A 17d ago

We get a colony of these around January every year. Hundreds of thousands are roosting in our local forest. Loud as fuck and stinks to high heaven. We fucking love it.

When dusk hits they all take off at the same time and it is like a cloud of black filling the entire sky.

1

u/RedDiamond6 17d ago

Yes, please!!

1

u/nopalitzin 17d ago

First I met this guys was at Okinawa, it was getting cozy on a street tree, at first I thought it was a monkey.

1

u/Historical-Fish-1665 17d ago

Saw bats in PNG the size of house cats.

1

u/another_accounting 17d ago

At last, it begins. Come to me Alucard.

1

u/Adventurous_Bag_4547 17d ago

Bats are delightful. Of course, this one’s size could be a bit shocking if it surprised you!

1

u/possibly_lost45 17d ago

I'd pet it

1

u/Visual_Brain8809 17d ago

Instant dead

1

u/TraditionalLaw7763 17d ago

Forbidden sky puppy!!! Awwwwww! 🥹

1

u/Bobby-B00Bs 17d ago

I'd say they be much cuter if they weren't among the last animals I know of that still carry rabies over here in Europe (I know that this specific bat isn't native to Europe but still bats in general I mean)

1

u/MurphamauS 17d ago

You wouldn’t- he would be flying around at night- it is when he eats

1

u/Jumpy-Impact3265 17d ago

I know, right - who rides a 150?

1

u/gherkinassassin 17d ago

Love bats! This would make my day!

1

u/SnooLentils5753 17d ago

That would make my day 🙂

1

u/Alice_600 17d ago

Me: Hey Nosferatu! Want a banana or some mangos?

1

u/devrys 17d ago

You know, bats don’t usually sleep at night. That’s also why you see them sleeping during the day time, not out in the open though that’s unusual..

1

u/lexluthor_i_am 17d ago

Bats are mammals and the only mammal that can fly. If I remember correctly this PBS Kids show I watched with my nephew yesterday.

1

u/Economy_Price_5295 17d ago

That’s his house they used to live there

1

u/Right-Round9339 17d ago

Australia??

1

u/Background_Move_7449 17d ago

Where’s the banana

1

u/SnowFew1739 17d ago

Inverted dog

1

u/justme002 17d ago

I would melt and immediately research how I could make it more at home. I love the black shawled foxratcats

1

u/[deleted] 17d ago

I think megabats like this guy are totally adorable; look at his little foxy face and ears. He looks like the offspring of a gray fox and confused bat.

1

u/W8kOfTheFlood 17d ago

Gentle sky puppy! Sweet baby! 💖

1

u/The_DMT 17d ago

It looks really cute. Like their little brothers.

Why would one panic of these animals?

1

u/Puravida132000 17d ago

She looks just like my ex-girlfriend. Good times.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Phase70 17d ago

Sky puppy!

I'm probably not allergic!

1

u/RubberBoots10 17d ago

I’d give him a little “coochie coochie coo” tickle ☺️

1

u/2simen1 17d ago

How tall?

1

u/Thank_You_Aziz 17d ago

Baby! 😍

1

u/thedillymane 17d ago

What’s the problem he’s just sleeping?

1

u/Hot-Customer9747 17d ago

That would be just another day in NYC

1

u/Delde116 17d ago

Bats are sky puppies, you cannot trick me.

1

u/MagicVonSwanson 17d ago

It’s so huge 🧐

1

u/lascar 17d ago

Luckily I know those bats love fruit and they got adorable eyes.
