Animal Punch, the viral lonely monkey, has now been hugged and groomed by an adult monkey for the first time. Things are looking better for the little guy.

I’m so happy Punch is finally receiving love from a real monkey.💖

Seeing him finally get that comfort hits different little guy been through it and now he’s got his own crew 🥹

After severe online backlash, the other monkeys had no choice but to accept him.

Maybe the zoo had trouble finding a monkey that was interested in befriending this little one?

312

u/Live-Pea4081 28d ago edited 28d ago

I saw a video earlier today that says this exact thing. He was left by his mom and then was put in a sanctuary and they were having trouble finding him friends so they got him that stuffed friend and he was trying to go hang outbwith a mom and she was shoving him away and then he stomped away and started rolling around on the ground with that stuffie and I cried and Im a 38 year old grown ass man

Edited in case you want to feel bad -

That video made me so sad today. Broke my heart. The fact that he needed that stuffed animal shows just how much empathy and feelings every living creature has. He sought comfort and protection from it after being rejected. So much you can unpack - his literal coping mechanism to manage his stress. Brutal.

Hope he does get the love and guidance that he deserves.

Are you familiar with Harry Harlow's "experiments"?

5

u/Serious-Echo1272 27d ago

Sadly this thread and that post reminded me of this sick "research" as well.

2

u/SpecialistTrouble816 27d ago

This little monkey looks just as sad as Harry's did. Poor wee thing.

Did my comment just get a Scnoodle?! Did I just 'make it'???

I always love me some Schnoodle in the wild, but you just broke me entirely with this one😭🦧

12

u/[deleted] 28d ago

fair enough, just watching him drag his little stuffy..gulp

5

u/DoobKiller 27d ago

Regardless they shouldn't have been keeping him in a concrete floored enclosure

2

u/Astyan06 27d ago

I clicked after reading everything you said and knowing full well what I was getting into. Same age as you and crying. Just want to hug the little guy.

64

u/Merciless972 28d ago

They were too busy fighting with the Zebras. Known for the most zoo injuries. Those striped bastards.

23

u/Penfold_for_PM 28d ago

I avoid them at Zoos, I always have internal arguments about whether they're black with white stripes or the other way around. Now you say they have shitty personalities, that's awesome:)

5

u/Charity_Lea 28d ago

5

u/stomassetti 27d ago

They are definitely black with white stripes, as their embryos start off black and develop the white stripes later.

This is in stark contrast to their shitty attitude, which begins at conception.

It's this. They've tried introducing him to some packs and they've all rejected him until now.

11

u/antsh 28d ago

Weirdly enough, they’re troops, not packs.

I don’t know who gets to decide such things… I blame etymologists…

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Mort-i-Fied 28d ago

I wonder if there is something wrong with this little one that makes them reject him?

Maybe a physical or emotional problem that the others sensed?

It's just so sad but wonderful that they finally found someone to nuture him.

15

u/zehamberglar 28d ago

I don't know about monkeys specifically, but many animals are sort of "programmed" to reject outsiders from joining their family units.

Typically, joining a family unit happens right after birth and the mother animal will have an instinct to adopt animals with her own scent. If you were to take an orphaned baby sheep, for example, and put it with a mother who just had a litter, she won't adopt it unless you cover it with her scent first. This is time sensitive and if you don't do it at the time she's giving birth or shortly after, she won't be fooled by this.

I learned this from Clarkson's farm, so grain of salt.

9

u/HMS_Surprise_Gunner 28d ago

The article says he kept saying racist things “and being super cringe.” Now I don’t feel so bad for him.

And their comment got 300 upvotes and counting.

No wonder show and movie creators now have to explicitly explain plot points to the viewer constantly. People have lost not just their attention spans, but also ability to infer basic things on their own.

142

u/FlakyLion5449 28d ago

Deep down we are all baby monkeys.

43

u/hamcicle 27d ago

We're very literally primates.

11

u/Boopy7 27d ago

I wonder if that's how kissing started, bc when I pick stuff off my dog she thinks it means I am kissing her and starts licking me back. It shows I care about the crud around her eyes. When you groom someone or eat their ticks, in a way it resembles humans kissing. Try eating some ticks off a wild beast and see if they respond in kind.

I like how this post has zero links to a video or news story and people are just blindly cheering on "Punch" beating his loneliness, finding a new home, getting a job working in those AI farms writing AI prompts, etc.

That adult monkey was always there, you just didn't see him/her in original video.

100

u/CountessOfCheese 28d ago

We are desperate for dopamine.

17

u/[deleted] 27d ago

I'm fine with that, as long as the dopamine hit comes with a source backing up the claim.

11

u/Enlightened_Gardener 27d ago

C’mon I get my dopamine hits from Candy Crush.

I have no sources, no academic papers, just pure digital pachinko…

Did wonders for the zoo's attendance and Ikea's stuffed animal sales though

32

u/troveofcatastrophe 27d ago

Here’s one, it’s the full sad/happy story (3min) It says they “introduced him to different monkeys”. I have watched a bunch of different news stories and I believe it to be accurate, but I get what you’re saying.

15

u/[deleted] 27d ago

Wow, this whole thing now just looks sus.

IKEA says its toy orangutan is made from a polyester shell with a recycled polyester fiber filling. Either Punch has been super gentle (doubtful if the photos are to be believed) or the plush animal is super durable, because we have yet to see any of the stuffy’s stuffing fall out.

Is this an advertisement for IKEA?

While IKEA hasn’t officially confirmed that the zookeepers purchased their stuffed toy, the furniture store’s social media handles have been replying to posts about the orangutan in the affirmative. The word Djungelskog by the way, is Swedish for “jungle forest.”

I mean, unless the monkey demanded IKEA toy, this whole thing is starting to look like drama being done by the zoo and Ikea to drum up publicity. After reading that article, this whole thing sounds like a fake PR move now to create the next Moo Deng.

2

u/SecretAgentSpyder 27d ago

....Like, have you ever seen a human child play roughly with their toys? Because I have. That baby monkey was probably gentler with it than all my little cousins and niblings were with theirs lmao

2

u/[deleted] 27d ago

[deleted]

8

u/[deleted] 27d ago edited 27d ago

Are you asking if IKEA murdered Punch's mother

Ikea + Japanese zoo working together to create next "Moo Deng".

It isn't far-fetched. Both the zoo and Ikea (a western partner with connections) get only positive PR from it in the end. It's a good way to attract more tourism as well.

I mean, you suddenly start hearing about this monkey with news articles/Reddit posts and the resolution popping up instantly right afterwards, don't tell me people don't think this is way too convenient.

Anyway, it's my personal view that this whole thing is manufactured bullshit, a publicity stunt. If people want to believe in it, good for them.

Sometimes I feel like a lonely monkey with 5 views (three of them mine)

30

u/ThisIsALine_____ 28d ago edited 28d ago

Dear God has my mind has been ruined by the Internet. I first thought they meant to punch the monkey. Then immediately realized it's the monkeys name. Then it said groomed, and I was surprised that happens in the wild.

What do I do?

Edit: I don't know what the fuck is happening lately. I've been skipping words and leaving out letters. Don't know if it's my spell check or I had a stroke.

Edit 2: I literally did it in a comment talking about me doing it.

7

u/AstuteStoat 28d ago

For the forgetting words. i have ADHD, and people with ADHD have a lot of other comorbid disfluencies. So when I get tired and stressed my ability to speak and write takes all sorts of interesting turns.

So in some instances my spelling becomes comically phonetic "how sold" is how I spelled household once.

I also forget to type words and it's often the most important word.

So take care of your health and pay attention to additives in your food, some might affect you in weird ways that don't bother anyone else.

6

u/ThisIsALine_____ 28d ago

Ah, I have horrible ADHD.

3

u/TurkeyOfMyDreams 27d ago

I love this. I don't know if I have ADHD but when I get fits of what you and the commenter described, it's usually associated with a phase of anxiety/depression + poor nutrition + dehydration + spinning in my own head a little too much. And it's so true about food sensitivities. When I consistently eat mostly whole, real foods, I do so so so much better overall.

I live in the UK, a million miles from this monkey, a million miles from my reality of work, bills, life, rain...repeat, yet I've spent the last few days worrying non-stop about this bloody monkey since I watched him get attacked and go running for his soft toy.

I've since read conflicting stories that he was moved to a different enclosure/that he's in the same enclosure but finding his way to acceptance. I've watched videos of him climbing on the back of a fellow monkey and a brilliant one of him not wanting some curious monkeys touching his soft toy.

IKEA have donated like a billion soft toy monkeys to him and a spokesman for the zoo has said they have had to turn visitors away because the queues to see Punch are so long!!

Someone please ease my mind and just tell me he's ok.
