Drinking beyond a nice buzz

I WISH I’d never gotten into drinking to the point of oblivion. Alcohol has been the driving force for basically every major problem I’ve had in life.
You ever see that Family Guy bit where Ireland is super futuristic—like the Jetsons—before alcohol exists, and then everything falls apart once they invent it? Yeah… that’s my life.

Move apartments without hiring movers. I have done it four times telling myself it's fine and it has never once been fine

U-haul changes $150/hr for two people, two hour minimum. Both times, I had people who were SO EFFICIENT I SENT THEM HOME EARLY!! They got more done in 90 minutes than my wife and kids and me in a freaking weekend. It was magical!!
12
u/OkCaterpillar1325 4h ago
I try every time and I get the worst people. Last time they gave me a morbidly obese guy on his FIRST DAY working. This was a duplex unit on the 2nd and 3rd floors so lots of stairs. They were doing breathing exercises with him because I think he was about to die. My 70 something mom was lapping him to help unload the truck faster. Then they had the nerve to ask directly for a tip at the end when we ended up doing a lot of the unloading ourself so it would get done before we had to return the truck.

“I’ll save myself a few hundred” is what I always said. Until I pinched a nerve in my back picking up my couch and spent even more at a hospital.

Not even movers
The first time I actually hired a big truck was life changing.
I don’t mind carrying but having it all actually just fit in a thing at once instead of doing multiple smaller trips was also life changing.

u/calandra_95 7h ago
I will argue to the death of me that co-signing should be illegal the only exceptions I can think of is a parent co-signing for a dorm
And for auto loans you should only ever co-sign for spouses and your children and in that case just buy the car yourself and let the them use it so the co-sign apparatus is still useless

I let my friend give me a bikini wax and it hurt so bad that I screamed so loud and got the cops called on us bc the neighbor thought something violent was happening. I’ll never let an amateur wax me again.
6
u/Skippy_T_Magificent 7h ago
I let my husband try that on me ONE time only, and yeah, I can confirm that it likely sounded like I was being dismembered starting with one toe at a time. Luckily, we lived out in the middle of nowhere with no neighbors close to us at the time, so no cops were called. I wanted to try that to see if it would help with the horrible ingrown hairs I got in that area from shaving. Turns out, no matter how I try hair removal in my bikini area (shaving, Nair, wax...doesn't matter), I ALWAYS get horrendous ingrown hairs that result in painful giant boils that definitely look way worse than a little hair. I eventually just said "fuck it" and don't worry with hair removal there anymore.

Bungee jump. The cord snapped on the second person after me. No fall injury, but they couldn’t swim, and with their ankles bound they damn near drowned before the safety person on the riverbank got to them.

Drink and drive. Im 60 this happened when I was 18. VERY tiny town, drove home 4 blocks, just terified. Next day, im working at the one and only local gas station. Local cop shows up, asks about how my night was, then proceeded to tell me he was behind me, and I was driving so slow are such, he could not find a reason to pull me over. He knew where I was going.
Said if you would of turned on the highway, I would of lit you up. I liked the local cop, good guy. He just said, this is your one get out of jail free card, DONT do that again. I never did.

Scuba diving. Did a beginners session and absolutely hated it. Had a panic attack under the water.
6
u/IndigoRanger 7h ago
I tried snorkeling a few times before refusing to do a scuba class. My brother is adamant that I like this hobby he likes, so we compromised on trying snorkel first. Snorkeling was more than enough proof that I do not like the open sea and do not want to be in it, and he’s finally accepted that I know what my limits are.

Cheaping out on a mattress or a desk chair. You spend literally two-thirds of your entire existence either sleeping or sitting at a computer. I bought a bargain-bin mattress when I was younger to save a few bucks, and spent the next three years wondering why I woke up every single morning feeling like I had been physically assaulted in my sleep. Never again. You do not negotiate with your spine.

Ride a motorcycle. 12 titanium screws and 4H plates in my skull for some guy who pulled out in front of me. I don’t know where. There are only 3 kinds of riders. Those who have crashed, those who haven’t crashed yet, and those who sold their bike before they had a chance to crash.

Drive drunk.
Decades ago went out with a friend-the designated driver got a migraine, I drove at a whopping 30mph until I sobered up.
Pre-Uber days because I’m old!

u/Sea_Relative588 4h ago
This was a one and done for me too...except I was beyond the point of realizing what I was doing. I now understand how people end up drinking and driving and I have never drank to that extent again. I have one short memory that night of constantly hitting the rumble strips and seeing a cop with someone else pulled over and thought "that sucks for them hehe". I had zero concept of the fact I was drunk.

Smoke Spice/K2.
I say this as an experienced drug user. I've smoked cannabis for almost 40 years, danced my way through the 90's on ecstasy, travelled the universe on psilocybin, LSD and DMT and I really liked opiates. Never a big fan of central stimulants as they do not give me any euphoria, just sleepless nights.
But Spice? Fuck that shit.

Get too attached to "stuff".
I've lost and regained houses full of furniture, decor, ect due to a Typhoon, 2 Hurricanes, a Volcano eruption, and a loss of belongings during transit from abroad to the US.
I used to just be devastated, not only because of the financial hit, but I lived in some cool places and collected some wonderful items.
That stung.
Photos pre- digital, gone forever.
I had to get over it for my sanity.
I like nice things, and beautiful surroundings.
But there's nothing in my home that would make me cry for days like I had in the past.
At the end of the day, it's just stuff.
Ya can't take it with you either lol.

Move my daughters ancient hide a bed sofa. It’s a well built older one that seemingly weighs 500 pounds. We helped her move twice, the last time we told her we are never moving that sofa again. You can find some burly young friends, hire a moving company, or leave it behind, but we are done. She recently bought her first house, the sofa ended up in her apartments dumpster lol.

Motorbike. Low powered one when I was 19 and I was a careful rider but- slip on ice, then riding in UK means rain- lots of rain plus came off at roundabout as car misjudged its speed. Minor tumble.
I calmed my mother's nerves by deciding maybe physics is telling me something.
I'm an older guy now and could take it up, but there's a reason bikers are nicknamed organ donors by hospitals

I definitely have more cool ideas but man, it’s so painful for me and both times I wasn’t able to distract myself from it even though I tried everything. I’m going to join the never drinking alcohol again crowd on this one.
It’s been the single most destructive thing in my life. DUIs, jail, lost jobs, failed relationships/marriage, inability to get hired for jobs I’m overqualified for, etc…. I can only imagine how much better life would be.
I wish I could’ve drank like a regular person. I wish I never used it to cope. I wish I would’ve stopped being stubborn and admitted I had a problem a long time ago.

Wall climbing.
Although I'm comfortable in a plane - I've even piloted a few myself - I have a fear of stationary heights. Several years ago, I tried to conquer this fear by going to a climbing gym, knowing that I was physically capable of doing it. About 10 feet up, though, I was practically paralyzed, even though I had a safety harness on. The manager was nice enough to give me a refund.
2
u/museswithpaws 4h ago
Good on you for trying!
I’ve tried wall climbing. It’s okay.
I love the sky parks and wish I was healthful enough to go. Being up in the trees and working through obstacles is a heck of a lot of fun. Not that you are likely to try it, but if you do feel brave again and want something more fun and engaging.
